Seven cases of surgically proven sparganosis were serologically tested by means of micro ELISA for their specific IgG antibody levels. For that purpose, crude saline extract of spargana from snake, Natrix tigrina lateralis was prepared and used as antigen. The sparganosis sera were also tested with Paragonimus and Cysticercus antigens to observe the cross reactivity. A total of 71 sera from normal control, ectopic and pulmonary paragonimiasis, clonorchiasis, cysticercosis and Taenia saginata cases were also included. Except for one case of old calcified infection, all of 6 human sparganosis sh

The weight gain phenomenon associated with sparganosis has been well documented and was first recognized in the 1960s. Many studies have been conducted regarding the plerocercoid growth factor in the larva of Spirometra mansoni. In the present study, we hypothesized that the weight gain may be affected by the adipocyte secreted hormones, i.e., adiponectin, which is secreted from the adipose tissues in case of tissue migrating parasitic infections. Specifically, we attempted to ascertain whether the serum levels of adiponectin change in murine sparganosis. However, serum adiponectin levels assa

The genus Spirometra (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) is a group of tapeworms distributed worldwide and includes important species that cause sparganosis and spirometrosis in humans. Traditionally, it has been accepted that non-proliferative sparganosis is caused by Spirometra erinaceieuropaei and proliferative sparganosis by Sparganum proliferum. However, recent molecular studies have revealed that the species present in Asia are Spirometra mansoni and the recently described Spirometra asiana, not S. erinaceieuropaei endemic to Europe. It is questionable whether Spa. proliferum is a valid specie

Larval cestodiasis is characterized by aberrant migration and proliferation of larval cestodes in body cavities or tissues and is a rarely reported entity in domestic dogs. Cestodes of the genera Mesocestoides and Spirometra are reported as causative agents, and can cause tetrathyridiosis and proliferative sparganosis, respectively. Reported herein is a case of abdominal larval cestodiasis in a companion dog from Florida, USA. During routine ovariohysterectomy, larval cestodes were noted throughout the peritoneum. Histologically, the larvae were characterized by asymmetric budding projections

BACKGROUND: Spinal infection with sparganosis is rarely seen, and multiple spinal infections with sparganosis in the thoracic spine have not been reported.
CASE SUMMARY: In this case report, a 56-year old male patient suffered from back pain for 3 mo. Computed tomography examination of the thoracic spine showed bone destruction of the T4-5 vertebral body, as well as the right pedicle and lamina of T5. Magnetic resonance imaging showed high signals on T2W1 images and fat-suppressed images in the right vertebral body of T4-5 and the right pedicle and lamina of T5, a high signal in the vertebral

Sparganosis is caused by invasion of Spirometra plerocercoid into various tissues/organs. Subcutaneous sparganosis can be diagnosed and treated by worm removal, while visceral/cerebral sparganosis is not easy to diagnose. The diagnosis depends largely on the detection of specific antibodies circulating in the patients' sera. Previous studies demonstrated that 31 and 36kDa proteins of the sparganum invoked specific and sensitive antibody responses, but also showed cross reactions with cysticercosis sera. We enriched protein fractions containing 31-36kDa through gel filtration and examined immun

A 19-year-old man visited our hospital following an attack of general tonic-clonic convulsion. Multiple lesions were noted over bilateral frontal areas on brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance images. The diagnosis was confirmed by positive antibody for sparganum using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Praziquantel, 2400 mg/d for one month, was prescribed before the antibody test results came out and the treatment failed. Total removal of the lesion and the enclosed parasite cured the patient. Although the features of cerebral sparganosis on brain computed tomography and ma

Human sparganosis is caused by cestode larvae (spargana) of the genus Spirometra, which exploit copepods as the first intermediate host. A wide range of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals serve as second intermediate/paratenic hosts. Human infections occur mainly by ingesting raw intermediate/paratenic hosts. Cases are found mainly in China, Japan and Korea, and sporadically also in Thailand and other Asian countries. In the period 1943-2010, there were 52 reported cases of sparganosis in Thailand. The average patient age was 32 years (range 11-82 years). From the available patient infor

Spargana of Spirometra erinacei infect many vertebrate species, but severe disease from sparganosis has been reported from few host species. Information on the effects of this common, introduced tapeworm of cats on Australian frogs is lacking. Our survey to detect significant diseases in free-ranging amphibians in eastern Australia between 1993 and 2000 revealed that infection with spargana (plerocercoids) of S. erinacei occurred in 12/243 (4.9%) sick frogs. Infections occurred in skeletal muscle and subcutis, especially the thighs, of large adults of Litoria caerulea, Litoria aurea, Litoria g

Recent advances in radiological and serological techniques have enabled easier preoperative diagnosis of sparganosis. However, due to scarcity of cases, sparganosis has been often regarded as a disease of other etiologic origin unless the parasite is confirmed in the lesion. We experienced a case of sparganosis mimicking a varicose vein in terms of clinical manifestations and radiological findings. Sparganosis should be included among the list of differential diagnosis with the varicose vein.

Sparganosis is a severe parasitic infection caused by the larvae of Spirometra mansoni, also called "sparganum." In human hosts, the Spirometra mansoni larva commonly targets the subcutaneous tissue or muscle. Sometimes it can also migrate into the brain, resulting in cerebral sparganosis, mainly characterized by focal neurological symptoms such as seizures and radiological "wandering lesions" on magnetic resonance images (MRIs). Clinical cases of cerebral sparganosis have been reported worldwide, mainly in Asian countries, but also in North America, South America and Australia. Only two cases

Spirometra erinaceieuropaei is an important diphyllobothriid cestode whose larval plerocercoid (sparganum) can parasitise humans, causing sparganosis. In China, sparganosis is an important foodborne parasitic zoonosis and poses a serious threat to human health. However, our knowledge of the taxonomic classification of S. erinaceieuropaei and its relationship with other diphyllobothriid cestodes, such as Diphyllobothrium, remains fragmentary. In this study, we determined the complete sequences of cytochrome b (cytb) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1) genes from 61 isolates of S. erinacei

We compared a microcolorimetric enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (colorimetric ELISA) and a microchemiluminescence enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (chemiluminescence ELISA) for the detection of specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the serum of 9 patients with sparganosis mansoni and 9 healthy controls. The chemiluminescence ELISA was able to measure serum levels of specific IgG over a far wider range than the colorimetric assay, and its detection limit was at least 10-fold lower. An additional 5 sera from sparganosis patients and 5 more from healthy controls, together with sera from 28 patien

Epidemiological surveys concerning cestodes of medical importance in Korea have been sporadically reported by many workers. Among various parasitic infections, cestode infections occur less frequently than other helminthiases, but they often cause serious clinical complications. Cestodes reported so far in Korea belong to the Order Pseudophyllidea or Cyclophyllidea (Subclass Cestoda), i.e., Diphyllobothrium latum, D. yonagoense, Spirometra erinacei, sparganum, Hymenolepis diminuta, H. nana, Mesocestoides lineatus, Taenia saginata, T. solium, metacestode of T. solium (cysticercus), and Echinoco

Herein, we report a rare case of subcutaneous sparganosis in a 60-year-old Japanese woman. She had a 2 cm x 2 cm elastic-hard, subcutaneous nodule, which was the larva of a tapeworm, and a surrounding granuloma in her internal thigh. It was thought that she became infected by drinking water contaminated with the worm. She was definitively diagnosed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). After excision of the lesion, the titer of ELISA showed clear decline; therefore, we could conclude that she had been completely freed from sparganosis. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasoun

BACKGROUND: Sparganosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Plerocercoid larvae (spargana) of the genus Spirometra. We aimed to provide molecular evidence for the infection of amphibians with Spirometra sp. in the inside and outside of Horton Plains National Park (HPNP), Sri Lanka.
METHODS: The prevalence of sparganum infection in wild frogs (Truga eques and Minverya agricola) was investigated in the inside and outside of HPNP from June 2019 to April 2021.A total of 1,434 Amphibians samples were surveyed to examine the spargana infection from the study site. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common hereditary kidney disease, which is featured by progressively enlarged bilateral fluid-filled cysts. Enlarging cysts destroy the structure of nephrons, ultimately resulting in the loss of renal function. Eventually, ADPKD develops into end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Currently, there is no effective drug therapy that can be safely used clinically. Patients progressed into ESRD usually require hemodialysis and kidney transplant, which is a heavy burden on both patients and society. Therefore, looking for effective therapeutic drug
