Importance of bird-to-bird transmission for the establishment of West Nile virus.

West Nile virus (WNV) is principally considered to be maintained in a mosquito-bird transmission cycle. Under experimental conditions, several other transmission routes have been observed, but the significance of these additional routes in nature is unknown. Here, we derive an expression for the basic reproduction number (R0) for WNV including all putative routes of transmission between birds and mosquitoes to gauge the relative importance of these routes for the establishment of WNV. Parameters were estimated from published experimental results. Sensitivity analysis reveals that R0 is sensiti

Eastern equine encephalomyelitis in upstate New York: studies of a 1976 epizootic by a modified serologic technique, hemagglutination reduction, for rapid detection of virus infections.

An extensive outbreak of eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) occurred in upstate New York during the summer of 1976, with 37 cases confirmed in horses by isolation of virus and/or by serologic examination. Other specimens collected in the affected area yielded 16 further isolates: 9 from 818 pools of 33,365 mosquitoes, 5 from tissues of 64 birds and 2 from 4 sentinel pheasants with serologic conversions. EEE antibodies were also detected in 81 of 499 wild birds tested. Our data implicate sparrows, cowbirds, and catbirds in the amplification of EEE virus and Culiseta melanura mosquitoes as v

Pathological, entomological, avian and meteorological investigation of a West Nile virus epidemic in a horse farm.

Pathological, entomological and avian investigations were conducted during the summer of 2002, in a horse farm that had four cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in horses. All the four horses had encephalitis and WNV infection was confirmed by RT-PCR and in situ hybridization procedure. Forty-seven per cent of house sparrows that resided on the farm were tested positive for WNV infection. Mosquitoes (98%Culex pipiens) collected by trapping at the farm, during this period were positive for WNV. The meteorological data for year 2002 were compared to previous 16 years. The precipitation and

Exposure pathways of anticoagulant rodenticides to nontarget wildlife.

Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides are widely reported to contaminate and poison nontarget wildlife, primarily predatory birds and mammals. Exposure pathways, however, have not been well defined. Here, we examined potential movement of rodenticides from deployment of bait to exposure of small mammals and other biota. At two adjacent working farms, we placed baits containing either brodifacoum or bromadiolone. We monitored movement of those compounds to the surrounding environment by collecting small mammals, birds, and invertebrates. Similar collections were made at a third agricultu

Does bird metabolic rate influence mosquito feeding preference?

BACKGROUND: Host selection by mosquitoes plays a central role in the transmission of vector-borne infectious diseases. Although interspecific variation in mosquito attraction has often been reported, the mechanisms underlying intraspecific differences in hosts' attractiveness to mosquitoes are still poorly known. Metabolic rate is related to several physiological parameters used as location cues by mosquitoes, and so potentially affect host-vector contact rates. Therefore, individual hosts with higher metabolic rates should be more attractive to host-seeking mosquitoes. Here, we experimentally

Novel Phylogeographic Structure of Avian Haemosporidians in a Widely Distributed Host.

Avian haemosporidian parasites are responsible for avian malaria and related blood diseases, which may cause harm to various hosts. Understanding the environmental factors that affect host‒parasite associations is critical for public health. However, most studies of this topic to date have focused on pooled data from communities, while the different traits of different host species often lead to an underestimation of these factors. In this study, we investigated the phylogeographical pattern of haemosporidian parasites in a widely distributed resident bird, the Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer mo

A field test of the dilution effect hypothesis in four avian multi-host pathogens.

The Dilution Effect Hypothesis (DEH) argues that greater biodiversity lowers the risk of disease and reduces the rates of pathogen transmission since more diverse communities harbour fewer competent hosts for any given pathogen, thereby reducing host exposure to the pathogen. DEH is expected to operate most intensely in vector-borne pathogens and when species-rich communities are not associated with increased host density. Overall, dilution will occur if greater species diversity leads to a lower contact rate between infected vectors and susceptible hosts, and between infected hosts and suscep

Parasite prevalence increases with temperature in an avian metapopulation in northern Norway.

Climate and weather conditions may have substantial effects on the ecology of both parasites and hosts in natural populations. The strength and shape of the effects of weather on parasites and hosts are likely to change as global warming affects local climate. These changes may in turn alter fundamental elements of parasite-host dynamics. We explored the influence of temperature and precipitation on parasite prevalence in a metapopulation of avian hosts in northern Norway. We also investigated if annual change in parasite prevalence was related to winter climate, as described by the North Atla

Synthesis of melatonin by the pineal modified photoreceptors of birds immunocytochemical localization of hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase.

Photoperiodic control of several biological rhythms is exerted through the inhibitory effect of light on melatonin synthesis in the pineal organ. Hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIO-MT), the last acting-enzyme in melatonin biosynthesis, constitutes a specific marker of melatoninergic cells. In the present study, an antibody directed against chicken HIOMT was affinity-purified and used to identify melatoninergic cells in the pineal organ of chicken, quail, sparrow and blackbird. Regardless of the species, intense immunocytochemical reactions were observed in modified photoreceptors, whereas

West Nile virus in the Americas.

West Nile virus causes sporadic disease in the Eastern hemisphere that is often asymptomatic or mild, whereas in the Western hemisphere, West Nile virus has been associated with illness and profound mortality in many avian species. West Nile virus might have been transported to North America by an infected mosquito or the virus could have entered within a vertebrate host like a bird. Although the most important method of West Nile virus transmission is by Culex species mosquitoes, additional modes of transmission have been identified. West Nile virus has been isolated from almost 300 species o

High-Accuracy Lower-Limb Intent Recognition: A KPCA-ISSA-SVM Approach with sEMG-IMU Sensor Fusion.

Accurately decoding human locomotion intention from physiological signals remains a significant hurdle for the seamless control of advanced rehabilitation devices like exoskeletons and intelligent prosthetics. Conventional recognition methods often falter, exhibiting limited accuracy and struggling to capture the complex, nonlinear dynamics inherent in biological data streams. Addressing these critical limitations, this study introduces a novel framework for lower-limb motion intent recognition, integrating Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA) with a Support Vector Machine (SVM) optimize

Serologic evidence for West Nile virus infection in birds in Staten Island, New York, after an outbreak in 2000.

After an outbreak of West Nile virus (WNV) infections in people, horses, and wildlife in Staten Island, NY, during the summer of 2000, we surveyed the bird population of the island for evidence of infection. Neutralizing antibodies were detected in 59 of 257 (23.0%) resident birds and none of 96 transient (migrating) birds sampled in early October. Species with the greatest seroprevalence were northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) (69.2%) and rock dove (Columba livia) (54.5%). House sparrows (Passer domesticus) and chickens (Gallus gallus) had lower than expected seroprevalences, 8.6% and

Experimental infection of five species of raptors and of hooded crows with Francisella tularensis biovar palaearctica.

Sixteen raptors and three hooded crows were infected experimentally with Francisella tularensis biovar palaearctica. The birds were infected parenterally or per os. One goshawk, one sparrow hawk and one hooded crow died during the experimental period, and the remaining 16 birds were killed 14-77 days after the first infection. Francisella tularensis was not isolated from any bird. Antibody levels against F. tularensis measured in nine birds varied from 0 to 1:1,280. In one goshawk with a titer of 1:1,280, positive fluorescent antibody reactions against F. tularensis were seen in the liver and

Development of an attenuated live vaccine candidate of duck Tembusu virus strain.

Infection with duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV) can cause large economic losses to the duck-rearing industry in China. In this study, we isolated a virulent strain of DTMUV (SDS) from sparrows near a duck farm and attenuated it via serially passaging (alternately for 100 passages) in specific pathogen-free chicken and duck embryos. We attenuated the virus after the 60th passage (SDS-60), based on the production of embryos that were free of visible lesions and still alive. The 70th adapted strain (SDS-70), obtained with a virus titer of 10-2.46 EID50 was chosen to be the live attenuated vaccine. Afte

Blood parasites of passerines in the Brazilian Pampas and their implications for a potential population supplementation program for the endangered Yellow Cardinal (Gubernatrix cristata).

Espinilho savanna ("seasonal steppe savanna") is a unique vegetation formation of the Pampas biome that is found near the tri-border of Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. The Yellow Cardinal (Gubernatrix cristata) is a flagship species of this ecosystem, but it is classified as "critically endangered" in Brazil due to habitat loss and poaching for the illegal trade. Population supplementation through the release of individuals that were captive-bred or apprehended by authorities from the illegal trade has been considered as a conservation strategy for this species; however, the risk of pathogen i

Response to geographic song variation predicts differential gene expression in the blood of a songbird.

Birdsong mediates territory acquisition and mate choice. In agonistic interactions, local songs generally elicit stronger responses than songs from more distant populations. However, the molecular mechanisms associated with differential responses to local vs. foreign songs are poorly understood. We addressed this knowledge gap by combining behavioral assays in the field with blood transcriptomic analysis, using a within-subjects design to ask whether male song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) show differential gene expression when exposed to playback of local and foreign songs. Transcriptomic prof
