Many functional resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have reported sex differences during long-term memory. The present fMRI investigation aimed to identify whether sex differences exist during high- versus low-confidence accurate spatial memories. During the study phase, abstract shapes were presented to the left or right of fixation. During the test phase, each shape was presented at fixation and participants made an old-"left" or old-"right" judgment followed by an "unsure" or "sure" response. The conjunction of female high- versus low-confidence spatial memory and male high- versus low-confide

UNLABELLED: Visual responses in the cerebral cortex are strongly influenced by shifts in spatial attention. This modulation of visual processing includes changes in firing rate, decreased response variability, and decreased interneuronal correlations; all of which are thought to underlie enhanced visual perception near the center of attention at the cost of visual perception at other locations. Visual information from the retina is relayed to primary visual cortex via neurons in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the dorsal thalamus. Although early studies describe an enhancement of LGN a

Recent experimental studies have found diverse spatial properties, such as head direction tuning and egocentric tuning, of neurons in the postrhinal cortex (POR) and revealed how the POR spatial representations are distinct from the retrosplenial cortex (RSC). However, how these spatial properties of POR neurons emerge is unknown, and the cause of distinct cortical spatial representations is also unclear. We have previously modeled spatial tuning in RSC based on processing of static visual features originating from the LGN-V1 pathway. However, recent studies have indicated that visual inputs t

PURPOSE: The aim was to present evidence that, similarly as in neglect, a combined pattern of spatial and non-spatial deficits of visual attention can also be typically observed in patients suffering from neurodegenerative disorders.
METHOD: Whole and partial report of brief letter arrays, based on Bundesen's 'theory of visual attention' (TVA), was applied in patients suffering from Huntington's disease (HD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), or Alzheimer's disease (AD). TVA-based parameter estimates were derived reflecting (a) perceptual processing speed and visual working memory storage capa

Spatial suppression and perceptual stabilization are two distinct aspects of motion processing that reduce the influence of redundant motion signals to enhance behaviorally relevant motion. Spatial suppression reduces sensitivity to large, uniform background motion, whereas perceptual stabilization compensates for global retinal motion arising from involuntary eye movements during fixation. Although both mechanisms reduce the influence of redundant motion, it remains unclear whether they are behaviorally related. Comparing younger and older adults provides an opportunity to examine this relati

Visual navigation is fundamental for embodied agents operating in expansive workspaces. The cognitive abilities of these agents form the essential basis for creating intelligent behavioral patterns. Memory and reasoning are vital components among these abilities. The former enhances decision-making by preserving a wide array of episodic spatio-temporal perception cues, while the latter allows proactive and advanced probabilistic inference of task distributions based on long-term experiences. Despite individual studies on these two cognitive modalities, their integration for enhanced decision-m

In hearing individuals, vestibular and visuo-spatial functions seem to be functionally linked. Previous studies have suggested that congenitally deaf individuals are at a higher risk for vestibular problems, which in hearing adults have often been found to be associated with impairments in visuo-spatial processing. However, communicating in a sign language provides extensive practice in visuo-spatial processing, which might counteract negative effects of vestibular impairments. Here, we investigated whether the functional link between vestibular and visuo-spatial functions is mandatory, that i

A panel of practioners and researchers convened to consider how to advance a broader understanding of the neurocognitive profile of people with dyslexia. While a great deal of research has been conducted on the reading process, the panel recognized that the "dyslexia brain" may be unique in other ways as well. In particular, the panel focused on complex nonverbal/spatial skills and correlated attributes such as career choice. The conclusion of the panel was that there is more to be learned about how people with dyslexia reason spatially and how these qualities manifest in academic, personal, a

Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that inferior parietal and ventral occipital cortex are involved in the transsaccadic processing of visual object orientation. Here, we investigated whether the same areas are also involved in transsaccadic processing of a different feature, namely, spatial frequency. We employed a functional magnetic resonance imaging paradigm where participants briefly viewed a grating stimulus with a specific spatial frequency that later reappeared with the same or different frequency, after a saccade or continuous fixation. First, using a whole-brain Saccade > Fixat

The vestibular system consists of the peripheral vestibular organs in the inner ear and the associated extensive central nervous system projections-from the cerebellum and brainstem to the thalamic relays to cortical projections. This system is important for spatial orientation and balance, both of critical ecological importance, particularly for successful navigation in our environment. Balance disorders and spatial disorientation are common presenting features of neurodegenerative diseases; however, little is known regarding central vestibular processing in these diseases. A ubiquitous aspec

Number sense is the ability to estimate the number of items, and it is common to many species. Despite the numerous studies dedicated to unveiling how numerosity is processed in the human brain, to date, it is not clear whether the representation of numerosity is supported by a single general mechanism or by multiple mechanisms. Since it is known that deafness entails a selective impairment in the processing of temporal information, we assessed the approximate numerical abilities of deaf individuals to disentangle these two hypotheses. We used a numerosity discrimination task (2AFC) and an est

A crucial aspect of interacting with objects in our environment lies in determining whether they are located within peripersonal space (PPS) - where immediate action is possible- or extrapersonal space (EPS), where objects are out of reach. Importantly, social context often prompts additional consideration of object ownership, which may interfere with spatial localization. Although previous research has demonstrated that both spatial and social contexts influence object processing, the neural networks subtending their interaction remains largely unexplored. To address this issue, the present f

The impact of inversion on the extraction of relational and featural face information was investigated in two fMRI experiments. Unlike previous studies, the contribution of horizontal and vertical spatial relations were considered separately since they have been shown to be differentially vulnerable to face inversion (Goffaux & Rossion, 2007). Hence, inversion largely affects the perception of vertical relations (e.g. eye or mouth height) while the processing of features (e.g. eye shape and surface) and of horizontal relations (e.g. inter-ocular distance) is affected to a far lesser extent. Advanced amyloid beta (Aβ) pathology is associated with aberrant neuronal network activity and cognitive impairment in preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) models. Here, we assess Aβ pathology's impact on spatial information processing in the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) of 18-month AppNL-G-F/NL-G-F knock-in (APP KI) mice during exploration of open field arenas. Spatial information scores are decreased in APP KI MEC neurons versus age-matched controls. Border cell firing preferences are unstable across sessions and grid cell spatial periodicity is disrupted. The effects of peripheral vestibular disorders on the direction and distance components of the internal spatial representation were investigated. The ability of Menière's patients to perform path integration was assessed in different situations aimed at differentiating the level of spatial processing (simple versus complex tasks), the available sensory cues (proprioceptive, vestibular, or visual conditions), and the side of the path (towards the healthy versus the lesioned side). After exploring two legs of a triangle, participants were required either to reproduce the exploration path, to fol

All-optical neural networks (AONNs) offer significant potential for feature detection and pattern recognition by leveraging light-speed processing, high parallelism, and low energy consumption. However, traditional AONNs are limited to spatial light intensity distributions for both inputs and outputs, restricting network learning to the spatial-only dimension. To overcome this, we propose a novel spatiotemporal AONN architecture that integrates the time dimension with the spatial domain, enabling simultaneous modulation of light field information across both time and space. In this configurati

Developmental topographical disorientation (DTD) is the presence of navigational deficits in the context of normal intellectual ability and in the absence of any perinatal, neurological, or psychiatric disorder. As only three cases of DTD have been fully described thus far, we are still unable to draw definitive conclusions about its nature and relationship with other visuospatial competencies, such as mental rotation. The case of Mr. L.A., a 38-year-old man with no history of neurological or psychiatric disorders, sheds some light on these open questions. A neuropsychological assessment inclu

Objectives: In dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) recurrent visual hallucinations (VH) often coexist or occur consecutively to impaired visual perception. Since in-depth neuropsychological testing is time-consuming, and therefore, not routinely performed in clinical settings, we aimed to explore whether standard cognitive screening tests may be helpful to alert a clinician to the presence of VH in DLB by exploring association between visuo-spatial dysfunction and VH. Method: The clock drawing, cube, and pentagons copying items from Montreal Cognitive Assessment and Mini-Mental State Exam and nonm

There is controversial evidence that deficits in the processing of low contrast and low spatial frequency stimuli are of importance in the pathogenesis of dyslexia. Fifteen adult dyslexics and 19 controls were examined using visual evoked potentials (VEP) at varying spatial frequencies (2 and 11.33 cpd) and contrasts (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8). Our results show that the amplitude of VEPs following different spatial frequencies and contrasts did not differentiate between dyslexics and controls. Further, we found significantly higher amplitudes of the P1 and P2 over the right occipital cortex. For the
