Visual speech aids: a British survey of use and evaluation by speech and language therapists.

One hundred and eighty speech and language therapists throughout the UK completed a postal questionnaire which asked for ratings of visual speech aids (VSAs) on a number of dimensions together with information regarding frequency of use of such aids, comments on the range of applicability of each type of aid and other demographic data relating to the diversity of client groups covered in case loads. The results (using analysis of variance) revealed a main effect of VSA type. There was also a main effect of question type; all VSAs scored poorly on some dimensions as compared with others. Furthe

HeyJay! A corpus of atypical speech for spoken language understanding and automatic speech recognition.

Speech technologies, such as automatic speech recognition or spoken language understanding, are not usually adapted to atypical speech, i.e., the speech of people with dysarthria, dysphonia, or another type of speech impairment. That prevents atypical speakers from leveraging speech assistants or other human-machine-interaction-powered platforms, which could make their lives easier or increase their independence. In this article, we present HeyJay!, a new corpus of atypical speech in English language from participants with neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's Disease, or Amyotrop

Smart speakers are an acceptable and feasible speech practice tool for children with speech difficulties.

PURPOSE: A record number of children are experiencing speech difficulties. This study explored whether mainstream smart speakers can support speech practice, and assesses a proposed five-factor model for how these improvements occur, based on: spaced learning, immediate feedback, autonomous motivation, reduced social barriers, and increased social interactions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods feasibility study with 11 families of children with speech difficulties. Data included pre- and post-trial speech recordings (rated by 24 naïve raters), activity logs, post-trial surv

Influence of an Intensive Speech Therapy Program on the Speech of Individuals with Cleft Lip and Palate.

Introduction  Compensatory articulations are speech disorders due to the attempt of the individual with cleft palate/velopharyngeal dysfunction to generate intraoral pressure to produce high-pressure consonants. Speech therapy is the indicated intervention for their correction, and an intensive speech therapy meets the facilitating conditions for the correction of glottal stop articulation, which is the most common compensatory articulation. Objective  To investigate the influence of an intensive speech therapy program (ISTP) to correct glottal stop articulation in the speech of individuals wi

[Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on speech therapy for children with Speech and Language Disorders].

OBJECTIVE: In December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread around the world and caused massive restrictions in our daily life. Many educational facilities and practices delivering speech therapy were temporally closed (so-called lockdown). Children with a speech and language disorder were forced to pause their therapy. The aim of this study was to describe if and how speech therapy was delivered during lockdown and what psychological burden was associated to affected parents. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Parents of children with a speech and language disorder were asked about their child's t

Modelling speech motor programming and apraxia of speech in the DIVA/GODIVA neurocomputational framework.

BACKGROUND: The Directions Into Velocities of Articulators (DIVA) model and its partner, the Gradient Order DIVA (GODIVA) model, provide neurobiologically grounded, computational accounts of speech motor control and motor sequencing, with applications for the study and treatment of neurological motor speech disorders. AIMS: In this review, we provide an overview of the DIVA and GODIVA models and how they explain the interface between phonological and motor planning systems to build on previous models and provide a mechanistic accounting of apraxia of speech (AOS), a disorder of speech motor p

Speech and language therapists' reflections on developing and maintaining confidence in tracheoesophageal speech rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: The management of tracheoesophageal speech (TES) rehabilitation is an area of speech and language therapists' (SLTs) clinical practice where knowledge and skills are primarily developed through postgraduate workplace experience and training. Although recent research suggests clinicians in Australia perceive there is adequate access to workplace training, little is known about how clinicians develop and/or maintain clinical confidence when working in this specialist caseload. AIMS: To investigate factors that contribute to development of clinician confidence as well as the factors

Coupling relations underlying the production of speech articulator movements and their invariance to speech rate.

Since the seminal works of Bernstein (The coordination and regulation of movements. Pergamon Press, Oxford, 1967) several authors have supported the idea that, to produce a goal-oriented movement in general, and a movement of the organs responsible for the production of speech sounds in particular, individuals activate a set of coupling relations that coordinate the behavior of the elements of the motor system involved in the production of the target movement or sound. In order to characterize the configurations of the coupling relations underlying speech production articulator movements, we i

Sensitivity to structure in the speech signal by children with speech sound disorder and reading disability.

PURPOSE: Children with speech sound disorder (SSD) and reading disability (RD) have poor phonological awareness, a problem believed to arise largely from deficits in processing the sensory information in speech, specifically individual acoustic cues. However, such cues are details of acoustic structure. Recent theories suggest that listeners also need to be able to integrate those details to perceive linguistically relevant form. This study examined abilities of children with SSD, RD, and SSD+RD not only to process acoustic cues but also to recover linguistically relevant form from the speech
