Cocktail party training induces increased speech intelligibility and decreased cortical activity in bilateral inferior frontal gyri. A functional near-infrared study.

The human brain networks responsible for selectively listening to a voice amid other talkers remain to be clarified. The present study aimed to investigate relationships between cortical activity and performance in a speech-in-speech task, before (Experiment I) and after training-induced improvements (Experiment II). In Experiment I, 74 participants performed a speech-in-speech task while their cortical activity was measured using a functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) device. One target talker and one masker talker were simultaneously presented at three different target-to-masker rat

A comparison of gain for adults from generic hearing aid prescriptive methods: impacts on predicted loudness, frequency bandwidth, and speech intelligibility.

BACKGROUND: Prescriptive methods have been at the core of modern hearing aid fittings for the past several decades. Every decade or so, there have been revisions to existing methods and/or the emergence of new methods that become widely used. In 2001 Byrne et al provided a comparison of insertion gain for generic prescriptive methods available at that time. PURPOSE: The purpose of this article was to compare National Acoustic Laboratories-Non-linear 1 (NAL-NL1), National Acoustic Laboratories-Non-linear 2 (NAL-NL2), Desired Sensation Level Multistage Input/Output (DSL m[i/o]), and Cambridge M

Large language model-based prediction of speech intelligibility after Vibrant Soundbridge implantation using multidimensional outcome data: Part 2 of a prospective study.

Active middle ear implants (AMEIs) such as the Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) offer an effective treatment option for patients with mixed or conductive hearing loss and large air-bone gaps, where conventional hearing rehabilitation often fails. However, postoperative outcomes-particularly speech intelligibility at 65 dB SPL in free-field (WRS65dB)-show high interindividual variability. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for WRS65dB based on four clinically relevant parameters: postoperative bone conduction thresholds (BCPTA4), unaided preoperative maximum speech intelligibility (WRSmax)

Effects of spatial configuration and fundamental frequency on speech intelligibility in multiple-talker conditions in the ipsilateral horizontal plane and median planea).

Spatial separation and fundamental frequency (F0) separation are effective cues for improving the intelligibility of target speech in multi-talker scenarios. Previous studies predominantly focused on spatial configurations within the frontal hemifield, overlooking the ipsilateral side and the entire median plane, where localization confusion often occurs. This study investigated the impact of spatial and F0 separation on intelligibility under the above-mentioned underexplored spatial configurations. The speech reception thresholds were measured through three experiments for scenarios involving

Artificial Intelligence for Detection of Parkinson's Disease From Speech Signals-A Comprehensive Review.

After Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neuropathological condition. It is a progressive degenerative disease at superannuation that affects the central nervous system (CNS) and slowly disable patients doing regular activities like walking, speaking, and writing. Early diagnosis of this disease helps to manage the patients and provide them therapy effectively. From the past few years, gait, electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and speech signals have been inspected to detect this disease at an early stage, out of which the most frequently considered one is s

Artificial intelligence enabled smart mask for speech recognition for future hearing devices.

In recent years, Lip-reading has emerged as a significant research challenge. The aim is to recognise speech by analysing Lip movements. The majority of Lip-reading technologies are based on cameras and wearable devices. However, these technologies have well-known occlusion and ambient lighting limitations, privacy concerns as well as wearable device discomfort for subjects and disturb their daily routines. Furthermore, in the era of coronavirus (COVID-19), where face masks are the norm, vision-based and wearable-based technologies for hearing aids are ineffective. To address the fundamental l

Phase Entrainment of Brain Oscillations Causally Modulates Neural Responses to Intelligible Speech.

Due to their periodic nature, neural oscillations might represent an optimal "tool" for the processing of rhythmic stimulus input [1-3]. Indeed, the alignment of neural oscillations to a rhythmic stimulus, often termed phase entrainment, has been repeatedly demonstrated [4-7]. Phase entrainment is central to current theories of speech processing [8-10] and has been associated with successful speech comprehension [11-17]. However, typical manipulations that reduce speech intelligibility (e.g., addition of noise and time reversal [11, 12, 14, 16, 17]) could destroy critical acoustic cues for ent

Predicting Speech Intelligibility Based on Spatial Tongue-Jaw Coupling in Persons With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: The Impact of Tongue Weakness and Jaw Adaptation.

Purpose Motor neuron diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), have a devastating effect on speech muscle function that often results in severe communication deficits. Over the course of bulbar disease, tongue and jaw movements are modified, but their impact on speech is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of disease-related changes in tongue-jaw movement coupling on speech intelligibility in persons at different stages of bulbar ALS. Method Parallel factor analysis was used to quantify the pattern of spatial coupling between 4 semi-independent reg
