The relationship between intellectual ability and auditory multitalker speech perception in neurodivergent individuals.

The ability to selectively attend to one talker in the presence of competing talkers is crucial to communication in noisy, real-world environments. In this study, we investigated the relationship between intellectual ability and speech perception under multitalker conditions. Since neurodivergent individuals show a wide range of intellectual ability, from above average IQ to intellectual disability, intellectual ability may be an important individual characteristic that impacts multitalker speech perception, but this is not currently well understood. We tested individuals with autism, fetal al

Hearing Impairment: Reduced Pupil Dilation Response and Frontal Activation During Degraded Speech Perception.

PURPOSE: A relevant aspect of listening is the effort required during speech processing, which can be assessed by pupillometry. Here, we assessed the pupil dilation response of normal-hearing (NH) and hard of hearing (HH) individuals during listening to clear sentences and masked or degraded sentences. We combined this assessment with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural correlates of the pupil dilation response. METHOD: Seventeen NH participants (Mage = 46 years) were compared to 17 HH participants (Mage = 45 years) who were individually matched in age and e

Visual Facial Enhancements Can Significantly Improve Speech Perception in the Presence of Noise.

Human speech perception is generally optimal in quiet environments, however it becomes more difficult and error prone in the presence of noise, such as other humans speaking nearby or ambient noise. In such situations, human speech perception is improved by speech reading, i.e., watching the movements of a speaker's mouth and face, either consciously as done by people with hearing loss or subconsciously by other humans. While previous work focused largely on speech perception of two-dimensional videos of faces, there is a gap in the research field focusing on facial features as seen in head-mo

Parallel processing in speech perception with local and global representations of linguistic context.

Speech processing is highly incremental. It is widely accepted that human listeners continuously use the linguistic context to anticipate upcoming concepts, words, and phonemes. However, previous evidence supports two seemingly contradictory models of how a predictive context is integrated with the bottom-up sensory input: Classic psycholinguistic paradigms suggest a two-stage process, in which acoustic input initially leads to local, context-independent representations, which are then quickly integrated with contextual constraints. This contrasts with the view that the brain constructs a sing

Nordic results of cochlear implantation in adults: speech perception and patient reported outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Although cochlear implantation (CI) is widely performed in postlingually hearing-impaired adults in the Nordic countries, the literature on hearing outcomes remains scarce. Aims/objectives: To evaluate and correlate hearing outcomes after implantation. METHODS: Prospective evaluation of 40 adult first-implantation recipients pre- and post-implantation with Dantale, the Danish Hearing in Noise Test (HINT), the Nijmegen Cochlear Implant Questionnaire (NCIQ) and the Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale (SSQ12). RESULTS: Dantalemean increased from 50% (95% CI [41.7,58.4]))

Perception of Rhythmic Speech Is Modulated by Focal Bilateral Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation.

Several recent studies have used transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to demonstrate a causal role of neural oscillatory activity in speech processing. In particular, it has been shown that the ability to understand speech in a multi-speaker scenario or background noise depends on the timing of speech presentation relative to simultaneously applied tACS. However, it is possible that tACS did not change actual speech perception but rather auditory stream segregation. In this study, we tested whether the phase relation between tACS and the rhythm of degraded words, presented in si

Evidence for causal top-down frontal contributions to predictive processes in speech perception.

Perception relies on the integration of sensory information and prior expectations. Here we show that selective neurodegeneration of human frontal speech regions results in delayed reconciliation of predictions in temporal cortex. These temporal regions were not atrophic, displayed normal evoked magnetic and electrical power, and preserved neural sensitivity to manipulations of sensory detail. Frontal neurodegeneration does not prevent the perceptual effects of contextual information; instead, prior expectations are applied inflexibly. The precision of predictions correlates with beta power, i

Relationship between pure-tone audiogram findings and speech perception among older Japanese persons.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify how the pure-tone threshold (PTT) on the PTA predicts speech perception (SP) in elderly Japanese persons. METHODS: Data on PTT and SP were cross-sectionally analyzed in Japanese persons (656 ears in 353 patients, aged ≥65 years). Correlations of SP and average PTT in all tested frequencies were evaluated by Pearson's correlation coefficient and simple linear regression. After adjusting for sex, laterality of ears, and age, the relationship of average and frequency-specific PTT with impaired SP ≤50% was estimated by logistic regression models. RESULTS: SP correlated well

Speech Perception Deficits in Mandarin-Speaking School-Aged Children with Poor Reading Comprehension.

Previous studies have shown that children learning alphabetic writing systems who have language impairment or dyslexia exhibit speech perception deficits. However, whether such deficits exist in children learning logographic writing systems who have poor reading comprehension remains uncertain. To further explore this issue, the present study examined speech perception deficits in Mandarin-speaking children with poor reading comprehension. Two self-designed tasks, consonant categorical perception task and lexical tone discrimination task were used to compare speech perception performance in ch

Normal adult aging and the contextual influences affecting speech and meaningful sound perception.

It is widely accepted that hearing loss increases markedly with age, beginning in the fourth decade ISO 7029 (2000). Age-related hearing loss is typified by high-frequency threshold elevation and associated reductions in speech perception because speech sounds, especially consonants, become inaudible. Nevertheless, older adults often report additional and progressive difficulties in the perception and comprehension of speech, often highlighted in adverse listening conditions that exceed those reported by younger adults with a similar degree of high-frequency hearing loss (Dubno, Dirks, & Morga

[Speech perception ability in a patient with a 8-channel auditory brainstem implant].

Auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is a central prosthesis that directly stimulates the cochlear nucleus in the brainstem for those who have interrupted auditory nerves and cannot benefit from the cochlear implantation. Speech perception in a recipient of the Nuclues 8 channel ABI, the first in Japan, is reported. A 25-year-old man with bilateral acoustic nerve tumors postlingually deafened due to tumor resection received auditory sensations with 5 channels. The correct answer using a coding strategy, SPEAK, was 35% for 5 vowels and 36% for 5 monosyllables. The use of ABI also improved his lip-r

Speech perception and the discrimination of brief auditory cues in reading disabled children.

The processing of speech and nonspeech sounds by 23 reading disabled children and their age- and sex-matched controls was examined in a task requiring them to identify and report the order of pairs of stimuli. Reading disabled children were impaired in making judgments with very brief tones and with stop consonant syllables at short interstimulus intervals (ISI's). They had no unusual difficulty with vowel stimuli, vowel stimuli in a white noise background, or very brief visual figures. Poor performance on the tones and stop consonants appears to be due to specific difficulty in processing ver

Time-resolved hemodynamic responses to sentence-level speech perception, production, and self-monitoring.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been widely used to explore the neural mechanisms underlying speech processing. However, the intertwining of perception and production that exists in real-world scenarios remains underexplored due to challenges such as gradient noise and head motion artifacts from speaking. Previous research has often employed sparse-sampling designs, pausing image acquisition intermittently to present auditory stimuli or record overt speech. While this approach mitigates some challenges, it cannot capture continuous brain activity during speech processing and d

Perception and encoding of narrative events during continuous speech listening in background noise.

Everyday speech comprehension involves interpreting overarching themes as they unfold continuously overtime and structuring experiences for effective encoding and future recall. Characterizing downstream cognition, particularly how the brain perceptually organizes and encodes information, can help elucidate some of the mechanisms underlying listening effort. Recent advances in memory research highlight event segmentation, the process of identifying distinct events within dynamic environments, as a core mechanism to how we perceive, encode, and recall experiences. In the current study, we exami

Multisensory Stroop effects in emotional speech perception: Age-related changes and cognitive links.

Previous studies have produced inconsistent findings regarding whether age-related declines in emotion perception affect various verbal and nonverbal channels to the same extent and whether they are linked to cognitive ability. This study systematically explored age-related differences in multisensory emotional speech perception and their associations with overall cognitive functioning. Thirty-three older adults (22 females) and 32 young adults (22 females) completed two Stroop-like tests examining the perceptual salience of verbal semantics, vocal prosody, and facial expressions. Speech-in-noise perception in autistic adolescents with and without early language delay.

Speech-in-noise perception seems aberrant in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Potential aggravating factors are the level of linguistic skills and impairments in auditory temporal processing. Here, we investigated autistic adolescents with and without language delay as compared to non-autistic peers, and we assessed speech perception in steady-state noise, temporally modulated noise, and concurrent speech. We found that autistic adolescents with intact language capabilities and not those with language delay performed worse than NT peers on words-in-stationary-noise perception.

Cortical potentials evoked by tone frequency changes can predict speech perception in noise.

Accurate and objective assessment of higher order auditory processing is challenging and mainly relies on evaluations that require a subjects' active participation in tests such as frequency discrimination or speech perception in noise. This study investigates the value of cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) evoked in response to auditory change stimuli, known as acoustic change complexes (ACCs), as an objective measurement of auditory performance in hearing impairment. Secondary objectives were to assess the effect of hearing loss and non-professional musical experience on the ACC, an
