Estimates of the prevalence of speech and motor speech disorders in persons with complex neurodevelopmental disorders.

Estimates of the prevalence of speech and motor speech disorders in persons with complex neurodevelopmental disorders (CND) can inform research in the biobehavioural origins and treatment of CND. The goal of this research was to use measures and analytics in a diagnostic classification system to estimate the prevalence of speech and motor speech disorders in convenience samples of speakers with one of eight types of CND. Audio-recorded conversational speech samples from 346 participants with one of eight types of CND were obtained from a database of participants recruited for genetic and behav

Clinical application of usage-based phonology: Treatment of cleft palate speech using usage-based electropalotography.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether a novel electropalatography (EPG) therapy, underpinned by usage-based phonology theory, can improve the accuracy of target speech sounds for school-aged children and adults with persistent speech sound disorder (SSD) secondary to cleft palate +/- lip. METHOD: Six consecutively treated participants (7-27 years) with long-standing speech disorders associated with cleft palate enrolled in a multiple baseline (ABA) within-participant case series. The usage-based EPG therapy technique involved high-volume production of words. Speech was assessed on three baselines p

Ingressive speech errors: a service evaluation of speech-sound therapy in a child aged 4;6.

BACKGROUND: A pattern of ingressive substitutions for word-final sibilants can be identified in a small number of cases in child speech disorder, with growing evidence suggesting it is a phonological difficulty, despite the unusual surface form. Phonological difficulty implies a problem with the cognitive process of organizing speech into sound contrasts. AIMS: To evaluate phonological therapy approaches in the remediation of non-pulmonic speech errors. Thus, adding to evidence concerning the nature of ingressive substitutions and their remediation whilst highlighting their occurrence within

Reproducible Speech Research With the Artificial Intelligence-Ready PERCEPT Corpora.

BACKGROUND: Publicly available speech corpora facilitate reproducible research by providing open-access data for participants who have consented/assented to data sharing among different research teams. Such corpora can also support clinical education, including perceptual training and training in the use of speech analysis tools. PURPOSE: In this research note, we introduce the PERCEPT (Perceptual Error Rating for the Clinical Evaluation of Phonetic Targets) corpora, PERCEPT-R (Rhotics) and PERCEPT-GFTA (Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation), which together contain over 36 hr of speech audio

Applying the phonological intervention taxonomy to expansion points intervention.

PURPOSE: The Phonological Intervention Taxonomy (Baker, Williams, McLeod, & McCauley, 2018) was developed on the basis of cataloguing the elements of 15 phonological interventions in the domains of the goal of intervention, the teaching moment, the context (who provides the intervention and where it is provided), and procedural issues. Additionally, three summary measures are computed from the tallying of elements in the taxonomy: concentration (the number of required plus optional elements, with a maximum of 72; flexibility (the number of optional elements compared to the total present for th

A new MAPT deletion in a case of speech apraxia leading to corticobasal syndrome.

Speech apraxia is a disorder of speech motor planning/programming leading to slow rate, articulatory distortion, and distorted sound substitutions. We describe the clinical profile evolution of a patient presenting with slowly progressive isolated speech apraxia that eventually led to the diagnosis of corticobasal syndrome (CBS), supporting the evidence that this rare speech disorder can be the first presentation of CBS. Moreover, we found a novel variant in MAPT gene, which is hypothesized to be disease-causing mutation. These results underscore the importance of genetic analysis - particular

The Effect of Hand Gesture Cues Within the Treatment of /r/ for a College-Aged Adult With Persisting Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: Despite the widespread use of hand movements as visual and kinesthetic cues to facilitate accurate speech produced by individuals with speech sound disorders (SSDs), no experimental investigation of gestural cues that mimic that spatiotemporal parameters of speech sounds (e.g., holding fingers and thumb together and "popping" them to cue /p/) currently exists. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of manual mimicry cues within a multisensory intervention of persisting childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). METHOD: A single-subject ABAB withdrawal design was implement

Phonological processing skills of adolescents with residual speech sound errors.

PURPOSE: Research has shown that young children with speech sound disorders may have weaknesses in phonological processing. However, such skills have not been thoroughly examined in adolescents with residual speech sound errors. Therefore, this study compared the phonological processing abilities of adolescents with residual speech sound errors to those of normally speaking peers. METHOD: Two nonword repetition tasks, multisyllabic word repetition, spoonerisms, phoneme reversals, and an elision task were used to compare the phonological processing skills of 10-14-year-olds with residual speec

Diagnosis and Treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech Among Children With Autism: Narrative Review and Clinical Recommendations.

PURPOSE: Treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and low verbal ability is a largely neglected area of study. Existing research focuses on language abilities; however, a subset of children with ASD also has speech sound disorders (SSDs). The purpose of this tutorial is to provide clinicians with evidence-based recommendations to guide speech assessment and treatment among children with ASD, low verbal ability, and suspected childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). METHOD: Multifaceted search procedures were used to identify studies that have assessed or treated speech sound produ

[200 years testing hearing disorders with speech, 50 years german speech audiometry -- a review].

UNLABELLED: FROM THE BEGINNIGS TO CLASSICAL SPEECH TESTS: The need for classification of different degrees of hearing disorders first arose when it seemed possible to treat deafness. Grapengiesser in Berlin 1801 had applied galvanic current to the ears of deaf children and reported some success. Pfingsten in Kiel in 1804 using this method was the first to use speech in diagnosing different degrees of deafness. He divided speech sounds into three classes: vowels, voiced consonants and voiceless consonants. Itard in Paris in 1821 gave a classification of five classes according to which sounds co

Surgical improvement of speech disorder caused by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive debilitating neurological disease. ALS disturbs the quality of life by affecting speech, swallowing and free mobility of the arms without affecting intellectual function. It is therefore of significance to improve intelligibility and quality of speech sounds, especially for ALS patients with slowly progressive courses. Currently, however, there is no effective or established approach to improve speech disorder caused by ALS. We investigated a surgical procedure to improve speech disorder for some patients with neuromuscular diseases with vel

Customizable Serious Speech Therapy Games with Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment for Children with Sigmatism.

Children with speech sound disorders should attend speech and language therapy and should practice the speech exercises regularly to surpass their speech difficulties. Since doing the speech exercises often may be tedious, there is the need to motivate children to practice them. During the COVID-19 pandemic, speech and language pathologists had the need to adapt their procedures to others with less physical contact. Here, we propose two serious games to motivate children with sigmatism on doing the speech exercises, which can be used at home and during face-to-face and online speech therapy se

[Features of the pronunciation in school-age children with minimal hearing impairment].

The peculiarities of the pronunciation of children aged 7-9 years with minimal hearing impairment (MHI) were studied. In 20 children with MHI and 20 children with normal hearing and speech development, pronunciation, the phonemic skills, articulatory praxis, as potential mechanisms of pronunciation disorders were assessed with a battery of tests. It was found that children with MHI are a heterogeneous group in terms of the state of pronunciation and the mechanisms that cause pronunciation disorders. 30% of children with MHI, mainly with unilateral hearing loss, did not have pronunciation disor

Phonemic restoration in developmental dyslexia.

The comprehension of fluent speech in one's native language requires that listeners integrate the detailed acoustic-phonetic information available in the sound signal with linguistic knowledge. This interplay is especially apparent in the phoneme restoration effect, a phenomenon in which a missing phoneme is "restored" via the influence of top-down information from the lexicon and through bottom-up acoustic processing. Developmental dyslexia is a disorder characterized by an inability to read at the level of one's peers without any clear failure due to environmental influences. In the current

A Framework of Motoric Complexity: An Investigation in Children With Typical and Impaired Speech Development.

Introduction The current work presents a framework of motoric complexity where stimuli differ according to movement elements across a sound sequence (i.e., consonant transitions and vowel direction). This framework was then examined in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), other speech sound disorders (SSDs), and typical development (TD). Method Twenty-four children (CAS, n = 8; SSD, n = 8; TD, n = 8), 5-6 years of age, participated in this study. The children produced words that varied in motoric complexity while transcription, acoustic, and kinematic data were collected. Multidime
