Characterization of the Endometrial Microbiota of Healthy Mares Across the Estrous Cycle.

In the past, bacteria detected in the mare's uterus were generally interpreted as a sign of endometritis, since the uterus was considered a sterile environment. This assumption has been challenged by the introduction of culture-independent molecular techniques, particularly 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, which have demonstrated that healthy mares harbor an endometrial microbiota. The aim of this study was to characterize the endometrial microbiota of healthy mares and to determine whether microbial composition differs between estrus and diestrus. Endometrial samples were collected from eleven h

Release and Redistribution of Arsenic Associated with Ferrihydrite Driven by Aerobic Humification of Exogenous Soil Organic Matter.

Humification of exogenous soil organic matter (ESOM) remodels the organic compositions and microbial communities of soil, thus exerting potential impacts on the biogeochemical transformation of iron (hydr)oxides and associated trace metals. Here, we conducted a 70-day incubation experiment to investigate how aerobic straw humification influenced the repartitioning of arsenic (As) associated with ferrihydrite in paddy soil. Results showed that the humification was characterized by rapid OM degradation (1-14 days) and subsequent slow maturation (14-70 days). During the degradation stage, conside

Identification of microbial antigens in liver tissues involved in the pathogenesis of primary biliary cholangitis using 16S rRNA metagenome analysis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple factors are involved in the pathogenesis of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a chronic cholestatic liver disease, characterized by intrahepatic cholangiopathy. In particular, studies have suggested that environmental factors such as the presence of granulomas in the portal vein region are important for the development of PBC. This study aimed to comprehensively analyze and identify foreign-derived antigens in PBC liver tissue to confirm their involvement in PBC pathogenesis. METHODS: Portal areas and hepatocyte regions were selectively dissected from formalin-fixed para

Profiling of the Conjunctival Bacterial Microbiota Reveals the Feasibility of Utilizing a Microbiome-Based Machine Learning Model to Differentially Diagnose Microbial Keratitis and the Core Components of the Conjunctival Bacterial Interaction Network.

Both healthy and diseased human ocular surfaces possess their own microbiota. If allowed, opportunistic pathogens within the ocular microbiota may cause microbial keratitis (MK). However, the nonpathogenic component of the ocular microbiota has been proven to undermine the performance of culture, the gold standard of the etiological diagnosis for MK. As the conjunctival bacterial microbiota generates unique alterations with various oculopathies, this study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of distinguishing MK using machine learning based on the characteristics of the conjunctival bacterial mi

Detection of Microbial 16S rRNA Gene in the Serum of Patients With Gastric Cancer.

Aberrance in the blood bacterial microbiome has been identified and validated in several non-infectious diseases, including cancer. The occurrence and progression of gastric cancer has been found to be associated with alterations in the microbiome composition. However, the composition of the blood microbiome in patients with gastric cancer is not well-characterized. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a case-control study to investigate the microbiota compositions in the serum of patients with gastric cancer. The serum microbiome was investigated in patients with gastric cancer, atypical hyp

Mineral-supported microbial functional differentiation across a vertical gradient in a vanadium-titanium magnetite mine.

Vanadium-titanium magnetite (VTM) mines are often associated with metal contamination, organic carbon depletion, and ecological degradation, yet how indigenous microbiomes respond to vertical geochemical heterogeneity remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated a ∼260 m vertical gradient in the Zhulan Iron Mine, China, by integrating elemental and mineralogical analyses with 16S rRNA gene amplicon and metagenomic profiling. Pronounced vertical stratification was observed. The lower-elevation section was enriched in vanadium (V) and Fe(II)-bearing minerals and harbored microbial communitie

Introduction Non-fermenting Gram-negative bacilli (NFGNB) are emerging superbugs of bloodstream infections (BSI), causing increased mortality in hospitalized patients. NFGNB are challenging to identify using conventional identification techniques. Hence, automation is beneficial for accurate and fast diagnosis; it also facilitates rapid treatment and recovery of patients. This study aims to isolate/identify NFGNB from BSI and determine its antimicrobial susceptibility pattern. Material and methods This study was conducted in the Department of Microbiology, LLRMMC, Meerut, for a period of six m

Diversity of Bacterial Endophytes of Maize (Zea mays) and Their Functional Potential for Micronutrient Biofortification.

Microorganisms due, to their immense metabolic diversity, have the potential to augment the uptake of iron and zinc in addition to other important nutrients in plants. In the present work, 129 different strains of endophytic bacteria were retrieved from stems and leaves of maize. Qualitative screening of these endophytes showed that 24.5% of these isolates were siderophore producers, while 14% could solubilize insoluble zinc compounds and 33% of them had phytase activity. Based on zinc solubilization efficiency and siderophore production ability, 10 isolates each from zinc solubilizers and sid

Successional dynamics of microbial communities and remediation of petroleum-contaminated soils during pilot-scale bioaugmentation.

Petroleum-contaminated soils pose serious global ecological and health risks. This pilot-scale study (120 days, 25 m2) aimed to evaluate the field efficacy of a compound microbial agent, ECT (composed of Ralstonia sp. CP, Rhizobium sp. BX, and Acinetobacter sp. FL), for bioaugmented remediation of heavily petroleum-polluted soil (initial TPH: 45,178 mg kg-1). ECT achieved an excellent TPH removal rate of 91.61%, with exogenous strains successfully colonizing the soil and maintaining high relative abundances (Ralstonia 42.1%, Rhizobium 10.0%, Acinetobacter 12.3% at day 120).
