The utility of ultrasound in the diagnostic evaluation of the posterior ankle joint.

Sprains are the most common injury of the ankle joint and the most common traumatic injury of the musculoskeletal system. Ultrasound (US) examination of the posterior ankle joint is a challenge for the examiner. This paper focuses on this difficult area and provides guidance on how to effectively perform US examination of the posterior ankle.

Imaging of Chopart (Midtarsal) Joint Complex: Normal Anatomy and Posttraumatic Findings.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to review the normal anatomy and posttraumatic findings of the Chopart joint complex. Key imaging features of the normal ligaments and patterns of ligamentous and osseous injuries are discussed. CONCLUSION: Traumatic midtarsal injuries, particularly midtarsal sprain, are often overlooked clinically and on imaging but are relatively common and typically are associated with inversion ankle injuries. Radiologists should be familiar with Chopart joint anatomy and the imaging features of midtarsal injuries because early diagnosis may help optimize clinic

A scoping review on smart mobile devices and physical strain.

BACKGROUND: Smart mobile devices gain increasing importance at work. Integrating these smart mobile devices into the workplace creates new opportunities and challenges for occupational health and safety. OBJECTIVES: Therefore the aim of the following scoping review was to identify ergonomic challenges with the use of smart mobile devices at work with respect to physical problems. METHOD: A review of 36 papers based on literature including January 2016 was conducted. RESULTS: Biomechanical measures in the reviewed studies demonstrated i.e., head flexion angles exceeding 20° in 20 out of 26 d

The health economics of ankle and foot sprains and fractures: A systematic review of English-language published papers. Part 1: Overview and critical appraisal.

BACKGROUND: Ankle and foot sprains and fractures are common injuries affecting many individuals, often requiring considerable and costly medical interventions. The objectives of this systematic review are to collect, assess, and critically appraise the published literature on the health economics of ankle and foot injury (sprain and fracture) treatment. METHODS: A systematic literature review of Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane DSR, ACP Journal Club, AMED, Ovid Healthstar, and CINAHL was conducted for English-language studies on the costs of treating ankle and foot sprains and fractures publish

Treatment and prevention of acute and recurrent ankle sprain: an overview of systematic reviews with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ankle sprains are highly prevalent with high risk of recurrence. Consequently, there are a significant number of research reports examining strategies for treating and preventing acute and recurrent sprains (otherwise known as chronic ankle instability (CAI)), with a coinciding proliferation of review articles summarising these reports. OBJECTIVE: To provide a systematic overview of the systematic reviews evaluating treatment strategies for acute ankle sprain and CAI. DESIGN: Overview of intervention systematic reviews. PARTICIPANTS: Individuals with acute ankle sprain/CAI. MAI

Dynamic techniques for clinical assessment of the athlete.

Clinical diagnostic tests objectively evaluate lower extremity ailments of the athlete. The positive squeeze test is found to be reproducible for ankle syndesmotic injury but is a poor prognosticator. The anterior drawer and talar tilt tests assess lateral ankle sprains. These have limitations secondary to positioning and guarding by the athlete, so comparison with the asymptomatic extremity is recommended. The Ottawa ankle rules assess possible fractures of the ankle and midfoot. The Thompson test evaluates Achilles tendon tears, whereas the windlass technique and the modified Lachman test ex

Epidemiology of sprains of the lateral ankle ligament complex.

Lateral ankle sprains account for 85% of all ankle sprains. This common injury is most frequently sustained during sporting activity. The ATFL is the weakest of the lateral ankle ligament complex, and is most frequently injured. Ankle sprains are often undertreated, resulting in chronic pain, muscular weakness, and instability. The consequence of this common injury for professional sports clubs is days lost in training and matches missed due to injury as well as the cost of rehabilitation. In the UK, an estimated 302,000 ankle sprains are seen each year in Accident and Emergency Departments.

Current treatment options for ankle injuries: lateral ankle sprain, Achilles tendonitis, and Achilles rupture.

The ankle is the site of many sports-related injuries. There is, however, continued debate over which treatment strategies are most effective for various conditions. This article reviews the relevant literature from the past year to shed some light on the ongoing controversy regarding the best treatment options along the treatment continuum, from conservative to operative management, for three common ankle conditions: lateral ankle sprains, Achilles tendonitis, and Achilles tendon rupture.

Axillary vein thrombosis mimicking muscular strain.

Axillary vein thrombosis may occur on strenuous activity with a clinical picture similar to a simple strain. It carries significant morbidity but a good outcome is possible with early treatment. The aetiology, investigation, and treatment are discussed.

[Distorsion of the wrist joint].

Wrist hyperextension is a common injury. However, obvious ligamentous ruptures are apparently seldom. The intracarpal locking phenomenon, allowing for correct load transmission, or overlooked pathology might explain this remarkable discrepancy. If the muscle tension fails, i.e., no locking phenomenon happens, and the ligaments are put under abnormal constraints with a high risk of secondary rupture. Such constraints might also appear secondary to bony alteration or previous ligamentous weakening. Patient history allows to define the pathophysiology of the accident, examination will locate the

An ankle protocol for second-degree ankle sprains.

Returning to full activity is of primary concern for the injured patient with a second-degree ankle sprain. This is especially true of a member of the United States Marine Corps. Unfortunately, many patients are not referred to physical therapy for comprehensive management of acute ankle sprains. An ankle protocol based on previous clinical experience was developed which included an acute and rehabilitative phase. An air stirrup orthosis was used as an adjunct to therapy to resume activities safely. This combination allowed Marines to return to full duty in less than 2 weeks.

Ligamentous injuries to the lateral aspect of the ankle: the ankle sprain.

Good protective devices are available which will prevent or reduce the severity of ankle sprains. If an injury to the lateral ligaments of the ankle--an ankle sprain--is sustained, functional treatment with early tape support, followed by a plastic support device will return the vast majority of the injured athletes to competition rapidly and with a stable ankle. In a few cases, surgical repair is the most appropriate treatment to return the individual to his chosen endeavor with a stable ankle.

Office management of the acute ankle sprain.

Ankle injuries occur frequently in an athletic population. Understanding the anatomy, biomechanics, pathomechanics, differential diagnosis, and special pediatric considerations allows an accurate diagnosis. Treatment with a nonoperative aggressive goal-oriented therapy program has been successful at the United States Military Academy.
