The problem of urinary calculi in association with urinary tract infection (UTI) was investigated. Fifty-two (7%) of 796 patients attending our outpatient stone clinic had UTI which was considered of pathogenic importance for their stone formation. Proteus was the most common microorganism. Metabolic disorders were found in one third and anatomical and functional abnormalities in two thirds of the patients. The infected patients had lower urinary calcium excretion and higher serum creatinine than idiopathic stone formers and had a higher frequency of stone operations. The prevalence of staghor

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Over the last 50 years, chemolysis as a primary or adjuvant treatment for urinary stones has fallen in and out of favor. We review the literature for a historical perspective on the origins and chronology of Renacidin therapy, focusing on landmark studies and impracticalities that have seemingly condemned it to history.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A MEDLINE search was performed on the topic of chemolysis of urinary calculi. Historical literature was reviewed with regard to stone composition, treatment modalities, outcomes, and complications.
RESULTS: A total of 61 articles

OBJECTIVES: Pre-existing pathology of the urogenital system may interfere with the pathophysiology of trauma, alter the radiographic imaging and influence the way of therapeutic approach. The aim of our study was to record the pathological lesions of the urogenital tract found incidentally during evaluation for blunt renal trauma and subsequently comment on their importance.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The files of 675 patients referred to our department from 1982 to 1998 for further evaluation of possible blunt renal injury were reviewed. Our standard procedure is to perform an ultrasonogram and i

OBJECTIVE: To combine retrograde flexible ureteroscopic techniques with a simultaneous percutaneous puncture to gain precise antegrade renal access in selected patients.
METHODS: Patients with minimally dilated collecting systems and complex stone burdens (including caliceal diverticular calculi) underwent adjunctive flexible ureteroscopy in an attempt to expedite percutaneous renal access. This combined retrograde and antegrade approach was also used in treating obese patients and those in whom prior attempts at percutaneous renal access had failed. The prone split-leg position and flexible

The surgical management of complex renal calculi has undergone a paradigm shift from traditional prone percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) to the more versatile supine approach. This evolution paved the way for endoscopic combined intrarenal surgery (ECIRS), a technique that synergizes antegrade and retrograde access into a seamless "four-hand" collaboration. This review explores the historical trajectory and biomechanical advantages of ECIRS, emphasizing its role in overcoming the limitations of PCNL and retrograde intrarenal surgery monotherapies. Central to this approach is the "intermediat

We investigated 112 patients with end stage renal disease. Clinical evaluations included cystoscopy, cystometry, voiding cystography, bilateral retrograde pyelograms, history and physical examination, and appropriate serum and urinary studies. Of the 112 patients 28 (25 per cent) had significant abnormalities of the urinary tracts. Of the 28 patients 17 had lower tract abnormalities, such as detrusor hyporeflexia, obstructing prostatic hyperplasia and urethral stricture, and 11 had upper tract disease, 9 of whom required a pre-transplant surgical procedure. Included in the group of 9 patients

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in subjects over the age of 70 is considered to be associated with a higher risk than extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL). However this technique is sometimes necessary for very large or complex stones in patients with several comorbidities.
STUDY OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the predictive factors of success and operative risks likely to influence the results of PCNL in a population of patients over the age of 70.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Retrospective study of 203 patients (110 males, 97 females) over the age of 70, in whom a total of 210 PC

From March 1989 through December 1989, 123 patients, 9 to 78 years old, were treated by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) with the Wolf Piezolith device. Outpatient treatment was performed routinely. Anesthesia was not required in all of the patients. No analgesia or sedation was given routinely. When pyuria had been found before treatment, a course of prophylactic oral antibiotics was given. Treatment consisted of 2000 to 6000 shocks in adults. The need for re-treatment was decided on the basis of the follow up X-rays. Fragmentation into particles 5 mm in size or less occurred in 1

RATIONALE: Although chronic pyelonephritis and urolithiasis are established risk factors for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), only a minority of patients with chronic urolithiasis eventually develop SCC. It is believed that the chronic irritation leads to squamous cell metaplasia that may subsequently develop into SCC. Although studies show that SSC generally spreads locally with associated symptoms of lymphadenopathy, metastasis to the lungs and liver have also been reported. However, cases spreading to the flank have yet to be reported. Therefore, the use of reconstructive techniques for the r

Purple urine bag syndrome, or PUBS, is a manifestation of a complicated urinary tract infection. Organisms such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Enterococcus can reside in urinary catheters and exhibit the purple color detected in this phenomenon. Risk factors described for this syndrome include the use of plastic urinary catheterization, the malfunctioning of the catheter, and long-term institutionalization. This disorder could be the earliest presentation of a urinary catheter flaw and requires immediate intervention and revision. In our case, a male resident of nursing home presented with

Primary epithelial tumor of the renal pelvis is rare, and adenocarcinomas account for less than 1% of malignancies arising from the epithelium of the renal pelvis. We describe in this study a case of a 56-year old male patient who presented with an abdominal mass and dull aching pain for one year. A diagnosis of hydronephrosis of the right kidney was made based on imaging studies. Grossly, the entire kidney was converted into a cystic mass measuring 16 × 12 × 10 cm and filled with gelatinous material along with staghorn calculi in the pelvis measuring 7 × 4 × 3 cm. Histological examination of

INTRODUCTION: Hem-o-lok clips (HOLCs) are a useful tool in mini-invasive surgery, especially for renal surgery. However, in rare cases, they could migrate into the collecting system and be calculogenic.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 53 years old man with an incidental CT finding of a left staghorn caliceal stone increasing its size in the last 2 years. He had a medical history of ipsilateral robotic partial nephrectomy (RAPN) at another institution 8 years before and a previous renal colic with spontaneous stone elimination about 20 years before. The stone was located in the upper

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is a rare, chronic inflammatory renal condition often associated with urinary tract obstruction, nephrolithiasis, and recurrent infection. Diagnostically, it can mimic malignancy on both clinical presentation and imaging. A 65-year-old woman presented with a three-week history of abdominal pain, fever, and giddiness. Cross-sectional imaging demonstrated a left staghorn calculus with hydronephrosis and features consistent with XGP and pyonephrosis. She underwent urgent percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) with drainage of purulent material. During admission,
