BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Traditional 3D motion analysis typically considers the spine as a rigid entity. Nevertheless, previous single-joint models have proven inadequate in evaluating the movement across different spinal segments in patients with idiopathic scoliosis (IS). Scoliosis significantly impairs movement functions, especially during activities such as ascending and descending stairs. There is a lack of research on the patterns of stair movement specifically for patients with IS.
PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate trunk kinematics in college students with IS during stair ascent and d

BACKGROUND: To reduce the increasing societal and financial burden of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), prevention is critical. Even small improvements of the modifiable dementia risk factors on the individual level have the potential to lead to a substantial reduction of dementia cases at the population level.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if pattern(s) of functional decline in midlife associate with late-onset ADRD years later.
METHODS: Using a longitudinal study of adults aged 51-59 years in 1998 without symptoms of ADRD by 2002 and followed them from 2002 to 2016 (n = 5404). Th

Total joint replacement is indicated to alleviate pain and disability associated with hip and knee osteoarthritis. Arthroplasty outcomes are typically reported together, or anecdotal comparisons are made between total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) recovery. Limited data quantifies differences in recovery trajectories, especially with respect to performance-based outcomes. Seventy-nine people undergoing total knee or THA were followed over 6 months. Functional performance was measured using the stair climb test, timed-up-and-go test, and 6-min walk test. Surgical limb

[Purpose] To compare the effect of an aquatic-based versus a land-based exercise regimen on the physical performance of severely burned patients. [Subjects and Methods] Forty patients suffering from severe burn (total body surface area more than 30%) were recruited from several outpatient clinics in Greater Cairo. Their ages ranged between 20 to 40 years and were randomly assigned into two equal groups: group (A), which received an aquatic based exercise program, and group (B), which received a land-based exercise program. The exercise program, which took place in 12 consecutive weeks, consist

We reported a 72-year-old woman with Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome. The chief complaint was weakness and atrophy of the thigh muscles, which prevented her from climbing stairs even with a handrail. Sensory and autonomic function was normal without amblygeustia. There was no malignancy found, and her serum anti-V/Q type voltage-gated calcium channel antibody was negative. Administration of 3,4-diaminopyridine (DAP), known to accelerate acetylcholine release, was very effective and she became able to climb stairs without a handrail. For evaluation of the therapeutic effect of DAP, the initia

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines how functional capacity informs preoperative risk stratification, as well as strengths and limitations of options for estimating functional capacity.
RECENT FINDINGS: Functional capacity (or cardiopulmonary fitness) overlaps with other important characteristics, including muscular strength, balance, and frailty. Poor functional capacity is associated with postoperative morbidity, especially noncardiovascular complications. Both patient interviews and exercise tests are used to assess functional capacity. The usual approach of an unstructured patient int

Lambert Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) is a rare disorder of the neuromuscular junction. The representative clinical triad consists of proximal muscular weakness, areflexia and autonomic dysfunction. The diagnosis is based on the clinical findings confirmed by voltage-gated calcium channels antibody titer and neurophysiology. We present a 69 year old male with prostate adenocarcinoma and 30 years history of smoking, referred for muscle weakness in the lower limbs and difficulty to climb the stairs.

Recent studies show the relevance of using sEMG signals and extracted features in powered prosthesis control. However, amputation technique determines the availability of residual muscles, and minimizing sensor number is to be preferred. Therefore, (i) limiting the total number of sEMG muscle inputs, (ii) minimizing the inputs from the lower leg muscles, and (iii) completely excluding the lower leg muscles will make the control algorithm economical, flexible, and practical, respectively. Using healthy population data, the aim was to conduct a systematic analysis for ranking possible muscle com

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSFalls from ladders remain a significant cause of injuries in workplaces as well as residential settings. While recent research reveals factors related to fall severity from a ladder, strategies that workers can adopt to minimize fall severity are not well understood. Results from our current study indicated that increased upper limb strength, achieving a higher hand hold, and controlled reestablishment of the foot on the rung have summative benefits to reduce fall severity and increase recovery from a misstep perturbation. Ensuring adequate upper limb strength among wo

This study was a randomized crossover of stair ambulation of Transfemoral Amputees (TFAs) using the Genium and C-Leg prosthetic knees. TFAs typically have difficulty ascending and descending stairs, limiting community mobility. The objective of this study was to determine the relative efficacy of the Genium and C-Leg prostheses for stair ascent and descent, and their absolute efficacy relative to non-amputees. Twenty TFAs, and five non-amputees participated in the study. TFAs were randomized to begin the study with the Genium or C-Leg prosthesis. Informed consent was obtained from all particip

Associations between physical ability, level of current physical activity and bone mass were examined in 47 elderly women (mean age 80 years) who had suffered from a hip fracture 3-36 months (mean 17 months) previously. Measures of physical ability included isokinetic quadriceps strength of both the non-fractured and fractured leg, and walking and stair climbing speed. An estimate of current physical activity was made using the Northwick Park activity index questionnaire specifically designed for hip fracture patients. Bone mineral density of the spine and hip (Ward's triangle, femoral neck an

Elective surgeries, as joint replacement, were resumed after the first COVID-19 pandemic wave in 2020 and a phase of coexistence with the virus began. Surgery was organized in a new way that incorporated procedures aimed at reducing the risk of spreading the virus. The aim of this study is to describe the early functional results for patients undergoing hip and knee replacements at the time healthcare services were being reopened and to compare them with the same outcomes recorded in the prepandemic period. This is a controlled retrospective study. All patients consecutively admitted during 20
