The middle ear bones of Mesozoic mammals are rarely preserved as fossils and the morphology of these ossicles in the earliest mammals remains poorly known. Here, we report the stapes and incus of the euharamiyidan Arboroharamiya from the lower Upper Jurassic (∼160 Ma) of northern China, which represent the earliest known mammalian middle ear ossicles. Both bones are miniscule in relation to those in non-mammalian cynodonts. A technique was explored for detecting the ipsilateral acoustic reflex using one acoustic signal (226-HZ tone) both to elicit the reflex and to measure the impedance of the ear. By eliminating the presentation of two acoustic signals to the same ear, artifactual responses that result from interactions between two signals are avoided. This investigation was undertaken to explore the feasibility of screening for hearing impairment in an intensive care nursery population with a combined acoustic stapedius reflex-ABR approach. In 111 patients with idiopathic peripheral facial paralysis (Bell's palsy) the prognosis was established during the first days of the disease, using sialometry and the stapedius reflex test in 102 patients. 47 hydrocephalic children (mean age 10.4 years) were examined on average 7.9 years after initial shunting. Contralateral acoustic-reflex measurements were taken for 10 normal-hearing subjects using a pulsed broadband noise as the reflex-activating signal. 1-10 years after the first examination, 56 children below 15 years of age with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss were re-examined with a test-battery consisting of puretone and speech audiometry, stapedius reflex tests, caloric tests, brainstem response audiometry and otoneurological tests.
