Antibiotic resistance in pathogens causing community-acquired urinary tract infections in India: a multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Empiric treatment of community-acquired urinary tract infections (CA-UTI) is determined by the antibiotic sensitivity patterns of uropathogens in a population. This study was conducted to determine patterns of resistance amongst CA-uropathogens in India, to help establish local guidelines on treatment of CA-UTI. METHODOLOGY: 531 consecutive positive urine cultures taken from adult non-pregnant females attending outpatient clinics of five hospitals in Delhi, India, were analysed. Sensitivity testing was done for ciprofloxacin, trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole (SXT), amoxicillin, amox

Degradation of Argan Oils Used in Edible and Cosmetic Applications After Exposure to UV Light.

This study investigates for the first time the effects of UV light exposure on the chemical composition of artisanal and cold-pressed culinary and cosmetic argan oils, as well as their quality and biological activities. We ascertained the oxidative stability of both types of oil through measurements of the peroxide value, acidity, UV-spectrophotometric indexes (E232 and E270), and iodine value. Over the course of eight hours at room temperature, the impact of UV light on the breakdown of tocopherols, polyphenols, chlorophylls, and carotenoid pigments was examined. The findings showed that duri

Effects of pH, nitrite, and ascorbic acid on nonenzymatic nitric oxide generation and bacterial growth in urine.

Nitrite may be generated by bacteria in urine during urinary tract infections. Acidification of nitrite results in the formation of nitric oxide (NO) and other reactive nitrogen oxides, which are toxic to a variety of microorganisms. We have studied NO formation and bacterial growth in mildly acidified human urine containing nitrite and the reducing agent vitamin C. Urine collected from healthy subjects was incubated in closed syringes at different pH values with varying amounts of nitrite and/or ascorbic acid added. NO generation was measured in headspace gas using a chemiluminescence techniq

Urinary tract infection in primary health care in northern Sweden. I. Epidemiology.

During a 12-month study at the primary health care (PHC) centre in Vännäs (population 8,000) 632 encounters by 265 individuals because of suspected urinary tract infection (UTI) or control after treatment resulted in 279 episodes of bacteriuria in 185 patients. Nine per cent of the episodes concerned patients with indwelling catheter or incontinence requiring other aids. Symptoms of lower and higher UTI were recorded in 56 and 12%, respectively, whereas one third of the episodes were associated with vague or no symptoms and discovered mainly at planned treatment controls. The annual incidence

Comprehensive analysis of antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation and virulence factors of staphylococci isolated from bovine mastitis.

Bovine mastitis, a prevalent disease, is often attributed to staphylococci species. These microorganisms can express a diverse array of virulence genes and have the capability to form biofilms, establishing a robust defense against antimicrobials and host immune responses. In this study, we analyzed 191 Staphylococcus spp., of which 81 % were identified as Staphylococcus aureus, and 19 % as non-aureus staphylococci (NAS), including species such as S. borealis, S. chromogenes, S. haemolyticus, S. saprophyticus, S. capitis, S. ratti, and S. pasteuri. Our analysis involved determining antimicrobi

Pattern of infection and antibiotic activity among Streptococcus agalactiae isolates from adults in Mashhad, Iran.

BACKGROUND: One of the main causes of sexually transmitted diseases is group B β- hemolytic streptococci (GBS) multiplying in the genital tracts. Penicillin is the most common drug for the treatment of infections caused by these bacteria, but in patients suffering from Penicillin allergy, Erythromycin and Clindamycin are used as alternative therapeutic drugs against GBS. Recently, resistance to these drugs has been reported more often. In this study, efforts have been made to determine the prevalence and antibiotic resistance of GBS. METHODS: Modified Christie Atkins Munch-Petersen (CAMP) tes

Natural curing strategies for nitrite-free dry-fermented sausages: Effects of NOS-positive Staphylococcus spp., Zn-protoporphyrin and polyphenol-rich extracts on untargeted metabolome and sensory quality.

The reduction of permitted nitrite levels in meat products by the European Union, driven by concerns related to nitrosamine formation and consumer health, has intensified the need for effective and safe nitrite replacement strategies. In this context, the present study investigated the impact of selected natural curing approaches on the untargeted metabolome, lipid oxidation, and olfactory profile of dry-fermented model sausages. Nine formulations originating from a meat batter control without nitrite; control with nitrite; inoculated with Staphylococcus equorum (L33); inoculated with Staphylo

Obstructive bacterial cystitis following cystotomy in a Persian cat.

Feline lower urinary tract diseases are known to be life threatening conditions in cats, especially when they occur as obstructive diseases in males. Early diagnosis and treatment is necessary, otherwise it may lead to death. A 3-year-old male Persian cat was referred to the clinic with a history of anuria, lethargy, loss of appetite and exploratory cystotomy 6 months ago due to urethral obstruction following urolithiasis. Urinary bladder was enlarged and painful on palpation and urine accumulation was observed in ultrasonography. Biochemical and hematological analyses revealed hypocalcemia, h

Addressing antibiotic resistance.

Management of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) has traditionally been based on 2 important principles: the spectrum of organisms causing acute UTI is highly predictable (Escherichia coli accounts for 75% to 90% and Staphylococcus saprophyticus accounts for 5% to 15% of isolates), and the susceptibility patterns of these organisms have also been relatively predictable. As a result, empiric therapy with short-course trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) has been a standard management approach for uncomplicated cystitis. However, antibiotic resistance is now becoming a major factor

The role of extracellular polysaccharide substance produced by Staphylococcus epidermidis in miliaria.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that cutaneous bacteria, particularly coagulase-negative staphylococci, play a role in the pathogenesis of miliaria. An accumulation of periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive material has been described as blocking the sweat duct in miliaria. Furthermore, a PAS-positive extracellular polysaccharide substance (EPS) has been identified as a product of some strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the relative ability of various species of coagulase-negative staphylococci to induce miliaria with particular reference to the potential

A histochemical and ultrastructural study of human urethral uroepithelium.

The ultrastructure and histochemistry of the human urethral mucosa was studied. By scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM) the cover cell of the urethra was found to be polygonal and with a surface topography characterized by numerous microvilli and micro-ridges. By transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM) the cover cells were shown to be interconnected with tight junctions but to lack the asymmetric luminal membrane and the fusiform vacuoles that characterize urothelium above the bladder neck. Histochemical analyses showed the human urethral cells to harbour large amounts of glycogen, and the glycocal
