Posterior dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint is an uncommon injury. Since 1824, when Sir Astley Cooper described the injury, little more than 100 cases have been described, and the majority of these have been in the last decade, identified by computed tomography. The significant morbidity and mortality associated with this injury is based upon serious damage to important anatomical structures found in the vicinity of the joint. We present a case report, describe the relevant clinical anatomy of this region, and review associated complications.

Posterior sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) dislocations are most often stable after reduction but may be associated with significant complications related to the location of the medial head of the clavicle within the mediastinum. In rare instances, a posterior SCJ dislocation is irreducible or redislocates after a closed reduction. Because of the potential hazards related to compression of vital structures within the superior mediastinum, open reduction and internal fixation is usually required. Although open reduction is widely accepted as the method of choice, the best method for achieving stabl

BACKGROUND: Patients with acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) and sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) injuries and with clavicle fractures are typically younger and more active than those with other shoulder pathologies. We developed the Nottingham Clavicle Score (NCS) specifically for this group of patients to improve sensitivity for assessing the outcomes of treatment of these conditions compared with the more commonly used Constant Score (CS) and Oxford Shoulder Score (OSS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cohort study in which the preoperative and 6-month postoperative NCS evaluations of outcome in

INTRODUCTION: Posterior sternoclavicular joint dislocations are extremely rare and emergent injuries.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We presented a case of a seventeen-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with traumatic posterior dislocation. He underwent joint reconstruction using sternocleidomastoid tendon autograft, and the operation went well.
DISCUSSION: At four-week and fourteen-week follow-up post-operatively revealed a surgical wound that healed well, regained stable sternoclavicular joint that was marked by a normal left sternoclavicular notch, full range of movement of the left shoulder

OBJECTIVES: Spontaneous sternoclavicular joint infection (SSCJI) is a rare and poorly understood disease process. This study aims to identify factors guiding effective management strategies for SSCJI by using data mining.
METHODS: An Institutional Review Board-approved retrospective review of patients from 2 large hospitals (2010-2022) was conducted. SSCJI is defined as a joint infection without direct trauma or radiation, direct instrumentation or contiguous spread. An interdisciplinary team consisting of thoracic surgeons, radiologists, infectious disease specialists, orthopaedic surgeons,

We report a case of sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) septic arthritis in a previously healthy non-smoker 63-year-old male following a direct blunt impact to the anterior chest, which served as the only identifiable predisposing factor. The patient presented with a two-month history of left SCJ pain, swelling, and a chronic draining sinus tract. Laboratory findings demonstrated leukocytosis and elevated inflammatory markers, while aspiration cultures grew methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus. Surgical management included irrigation and debridement of the SCJ with saucerization of the necroti

Posterior sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) dislocation is a rare but potentially life-threatening injury due to its proximity to critical mediastinal structures. Early diagnosis and prompt management are essential to prevent severe complications such as vascular or respiratory compromise. We report a case of a 23-year-old male who presented to our emergency department five days after a high-energy motor vehicle accident with isolated, closed posterior dislocation of the SCJ. The patient complained of left shoulder pain, mild dysphagia, and intermittent tingling in the left upper limb. Imaging reve

Posterior sternoclavicular joint dislocation is a rare injury requiring prompt diagnosis as it has been associated with the compression of the subclavian and brachiocephalic arteries. We report the case of a 27-year-old male presenting with altered mental status and left hemiparesis found to have life-altering neurologic damage caused by severe orthopedic injury after a fall while intoxicated. Imaging revealed a posteriorly displaced right medial clavicle with surrounding hematoma compressing the brachiocephalic artery causing local thrombus formation and distal embolization, ultimately result

Bipolar dislocation of the clavicle is rare. In the literature, every reported bipolar dislocation of the clavicle is caused by a traumatic injury with loss of function of the affected shoulder. Currently, there is no recommendation to treat. A conservative treatment can be tried first to achieve adequate shoulder function. If this cannot be achieved, surgical treatment will be indicated. In the literature, many options for surgical treatment are described. This article presents a case of a chronic Rockwood V injury with chronic anterior sternoclavicular joint instability. The special feature

Posterior sternoclavicular joint (SC) dislocation is a rare but potentially life-threatening injury in pediatric athletes due to its proximity to mediastinal structures and frequent delay in diagnosis. We present a previously healthy 13-year-old male wrestler who developed persistent right SC pain and swelling after a forceful shoulder impact during a match, initially diagnosed as an acromioclavicular (AC) joint injury based on plain radiographs. Despite conservative management, continued symptoms prompted further assessment with computed tomography, which revealed a posterior SC joint disloca

Bilateral sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) dislocation is an exceptionally rare injury, particularly when associated with inferior migration of the sternal body and multiple rib fractures. We report the case of a 51-year-old male who sustained high-energy thoracic crush trauma resulting in bilateral SCJ dislocation, inferior sternal displacement, rib fractures, and a Grade I open humeral shaft fracture. Surgical management required a multidisciplinary approach including SCJ reduction, ligament reconstruction with a semitendinosus tendon graft in a figure-of-eight configuration, clavicular fixation

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) scans are the standard imaging modality for the diagnosis and treatment guide for adolescent posterior sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) injuries. However, the medial clavicular physis is not visualized and it is not possible to differentiate between a true SCJ dislocation and a physeal injury (PI). An magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan can visualize the bone and the physis.
METHODS: We treated a series of patients with adolescent posterior SCJ injuries diagnosed on CT scan. Patients underwent an MRI scan to differentiate between a true SCJ dislocation and a

Sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) dislocation is a rare but serious orthopedic injury. Posterior dislocations are more concerning due to the SCJ's proximity to visceral structures such as the trachea, esophagus, subclavian vessels, and brachial plexus. Due to the potential long-term sequelae of missed diagnosis, clinical suspicion should be high when a patient presents with a compression-type injury to the shoulder girdle and pain or deformity to the SCJ. Here we present a case of a 15-year-old soccer player who presented to the emergency department (ED) after a fall onto his right shoulder with a

BACKGROUND: Sternoclavicular joint septic arthritis (SCJ SA) is a rare infectious disease process with reported life-threatening complications such as mediastinal abscess and mediastinitis. The available literature reports variable success of medical management and a predominance of surgical management, with a 58% rate of surgical washout/debridement and high rates (47%) of resection of the SCJ and medial third of the clavicle.
METHODS: A retrospective case series of radiologically or microbiologically confirmed cases of bacterial SCJ SA at Fiona Stanley Hospital was analysed. Demographic dat

INTRODUCTION: Septic arthritis of the sternoclavicular joint is rare, comprising approximately 0.5% to 1% of all joint infections. Predisposing causes include immunocompromising diseases such as diabetes, HIV infection, renal failure and intravenous drug abuse.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of bilateral sternoclavicular joint septic arthritis in an elderly patient secondary to an indwelling right subclavian vein catheter. The insidious nature of the presentation is highlighted. We also review the literature regarding the epidemiology, investigation and methods of treatment of the c

The authors describe three patients in whom septic arthritis of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) occurred, drug addiction and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection representing the predisposing conditions. Infectious arthritis is well known in intravenous drug users, but it is rare in HIV positive patients, who are prone to bacterial infections from usual or unusual microorganisms. In one case, staphylococcus aureus methicillin sensitive was responsible for septic arthritis. In another case, SCJ infection was associated with pneumonitis.

INTRODUCTION: Torticollis is an abnormal head posture with a broad differential diagnosis. Posterior sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) dislocation is a rare and potentially life-threatening injury because of its proximity to the mediastinal structures. Torticollis as the presenting feature of posterior SCJ dislocation has not been previously described.
CASE REPORT: A 16-year-old male kabaddi player presented with acute right-sided torticollis and left upper limb pain 3 days after a tackle injury. Imaging confirmed a posterior left SCJ dislocation without vascular compromise. Closed reduction under
