Combined transverse femoral ostectomy and tibial tuberosity distalisation for correction of medial patella luxation and patella alta in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Patella alta is the proximal displacement of the patella within the femoral trochlea. Previous studies have identified an association between patella alta and patella luxation. Distalisation of the tibial tuberosity has been recommended to establish proximodistal alignment of the stifle extensor mechanism with the underlying femur in dogs affected by patella alta. However, a recent canine ex vivo study found stifle extensor mechanism load increased significantly following tibial tuberosity distalisation. Generation of excessive load within the stifle extensor mechanism was avoidabl

Comparative anatomical measurements of osseous structures in the ovine and human knee.

The ovine stifle has been increasingly used as a large animal model for the human knee. Still, comparative anatomical measurements of the knee in sheep and humans are missing. Thus, the purpose of this study was to describe and measure the osseous anatomy of the ovine stifle in comparison to the human knee. Twenty-four stifles of skeletal-mature merino-sheep and 24 human cadaver knees were obtained and distances between selected anatomical structures of the distal femur, the proximal tibia, and the patella were measured digitally and documented. Based on these, intercondylar ratio, tibial aspe

Prospective measurement of outcomes and complications of tibial tuberosity advancement using novel mini plates in small breed dogs.

Cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) disease is a common orthopedic disease in canine patients. Tibial osteotomy procedures for the treatment of cranial cruciate ligament disease in small breed dogs (<15 kg) have previously been limited. A total of 22 client-owned dogs, 26 stifles, with cranial cruciate ligament disease were treated with novel mini-tibial tuberosity advancement plates. The most common intraoperative complications included the need for plate-cage overlap in 7 stifles (26.92%) and screw head fracture in 1 (3.85%). Post-operative complications included tibial tuberosity fracture (3.8
