Time-course of decline in different cognitive domains in Parkinson's disease: a retrospective study.

Cognitive impairment and dementia are common non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). To elucidate the potentially typical progression of cognitive decline in PD and its variation, we retrospectively surveyed neuropsychological data obtained at the Parkinson-Klinik Ortenau, Germany in the years 1996-2015. Many of the patients in the surveyed period were repeatedly admitted to our clinic and we were thus able to compile neuropsychological re-test data for 252 patients obtained at varying time intervals. Neuropsychological testing was conducted with the NAI (Nürnberger Alters-Inventar). T

Intake of niacin, folate, vitamin B-6, and vitamin B-12 through young adulthood and cognitive function in midlife: the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

Background: Epidemiologic evidence regarding niacin, folate, vitamin B-6, and vitamin B-12 intake in relation to cognitive function is limited, especially in midlife. Objective: We hypothesize that higher intake of these B vitamins in young adulthood is associated with better cognition later in life.Design: This study comprised a community-based multicenter cohort of black and white men and women aged 18-30 y in 1985-1986 (year 0, i.e., baseline) from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study (n = 3136). We examined participants' CARDIA diet history at years 0, 7, and

Disentangling interoception and its links to cognitive functioning in fibromyalgia.

Patients with fibromyalgia experience pain, cognitive dysfunction, and atypical interoception. However, it is still unclear whether the changes in interoceptive processes have consequences in managing cognitive tasks. The current study investigates the relationship between interoception and cognition in fibromyalgia. Twenty-nine fibromyalgia patients completed clinical questionnaires, the Digit-span, and the Stroop test. Interoceptive Accuracy (IAc) was measured by the heartbeat detection task, Interoceptive Awareness (IAw) via confidence ratings, and Interoceptive Sensibility (IS) via the Mul

Distinct Brain Mechanisms for Conflict Adaptation within and across Conflict Types.

Cognitive conflict, like other cognitive processes, shows the characteristic of adaptation, that is, conflict effects are attenuated when immediately following a conflicting event, a phenomenon known as the conflict adaptation effect (CAE). One important aspect of CAE is its sensitivity to the intertrial coherence of conflict type, that is, behavioral CAE occurs only if consecutive trials are of the same conflict type. Although reliably observed behaviorally, the neural mechanisms underlying such a phenomenon remains elusive. With a paradigm combining the classic Simon task and Stroop task, th

Inhibitory control training and transcranial direct current stimulation of the pre-supplementary motor area: behavioral gains and transfer effects.

Inhibitory control is a critical part of executive function and an important cognitive process in daily life. It is currently unclear how to optimally improve inhibitory control ability through behavior training and other interventions. Here, we explored the factors that influence inhibition control training in two experiments, focusing on the gains and transfer effects of training. Experiments 1 and 2 investigated the effects of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the pre-supplementary motor area and an increase in training duration on the training effect for inhibitory

Diversities of behavioral traits and neuropsychological function in different substance addiction.

OBJECTIVE: There are various temperaments and personality characters that modulate the development of substance addiction. The pharmacological properties of substances would alter the homeostasis of brain function and influence the neuropsychological performance through different neurotransmissions which then facilitate diverse emotional and behavioral responses. Our goal is to assess the interaction between personality characteristics, neuropsychological performances and Stroop interference in alcoholics, heroin and amphetamine dependent persons. METHODS: Subjects with alcohol (N=95), heroin

Lessons learned from an fMRI-guided rTMS study on performance in a numerical Stroop task.

The Stroop task is a well-established tool to investigate the influence of competing visual categories on decision making. Neuroimaging as well as rTMS studies have demonstrated the involvement of parietal structures, particularly the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), in this task. Given its reliability, the numerical Stroop task was used to compare the effects of different TMS targeting approaches by Sack and colleagues (Sack AT 2009), who elegantly demonstrated the superiority of individualized fMRI targeting. We performed the present study to test whether fMRI-guided rTMS effects on numerical Str

Relating distractor suppression to problematic drinking behavior.

BACKGROUND: Impaired cognitive control has been linked to weakened self-regulatory processes underlying compulsive substance intake. Previous research has provided evidence for impaired task performance in substance-abusing groups during Stroop and Go/No-Go tasks. Mechanisms of distractor suppression in visual search might also involve overlapping regulatory components that support goal-directed behavior by resolving the attentional competition between distractors and the target of search. However, the efficiency of learning-dependent distractor suppression has not been examined in the context

Relations between suggestibility, working memory and response inhibition in middle childhood.

Individual difference in children's interrogative suggestibility should be theoretically associated with working memory and response inhibition skills. Yet, previous studies have reached mixed conclusions regarding the role of cognitive factors. In the present research, we re-examined this question in a sample of 203 children attending primary or middle school. They were administered the Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scale, a verbal span task (to measure the capacity of the phonological loop), and two inhibitory tasks (the Stroop Color and Word Test and the Global-Local Task). In line with our pre

Effect of Acute Normobaric Hypoxia Exposure on Executive Functions among Young Physically Active Males.

BACKGROUND: On the one hand, hypoxic exposure may result in progressive brain metabolism disturbance, causing subsequent cognitive impairments. On the other hand, it might also enhance neurogenesis and brain vascularization as well as accelerate cerebral blood flow, leading to cognitive function improvement. The aim of this study was to investigate whether progressive stages of normobaric hypoxia (NH) (FIO2 = 13%, FIO2 = 12%, and FIO2 = 11%) differentially affect post-exposure cognitive performance. METHODS: Fifteen physically active men (age = 23.1 ± 2.1) participated in the study. The Stroo

No strong evidence for abnormal levels of dysfunctional attitudes, automatic thoughts, and emotional information-processing biases in remitted bipolar I affective disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Beck extended his original cognitive theory of depression by suggesting that mania was a mirror image of depression characterized by extreme positive cognition about the self, the world, and the future. However, there were no suggestions what might be special regarding cognitive features in bipolar patients (Mansell & Scott, 2006). We therefore used different indicators to evaluate cognitive processes in bipolar patients and healthy controls. METHODS: We compared 19 remitted bipolar I patients (BPs) without any Axis I comorbidity with 19 healthy individuals (CG). All participant

Improving interference control without conflict exposure: prefrontal fNIRS-decoded neurofeedback training.

SIGNIFICANCE: Traditional exposure therapy or cognitive training requires repeated presentation of unwanted stimuli, whereas localizationist neuromodulation overlooks individual variation. We propose a closed-loop neuromodulation approach termed functional near-infrared spectroscopy-decoded neurofeedback training, designed to modify prefrontal hemoglobin dynamics and neural activity patterns. AIM: We aim to enhance interference control without interfering stimuli using a data-driven, individualized, time-resolved decoded neurofeedback, potentially offering a balanced compromise and an alterna

Executive dysfunction in medicated, remitted state of major depression.

BACKGROUND: Past neuropsychological studies on depression have documented executive dysfunction and it has been reported that some dysfunction persists even after depressive symptoms disappear. Studies have shown a correlation between cerebrovascular lesions and executive dysfunction in depression among the elderly. The aim of the present study was to focus on executive functions in remitted major depressive disorder (MDD) patients, and to investigate whether remitted young and elderly patients show different patterns of executive dysfunction, and to ascertain the relationships with vascular l

Neuropsychological function in relation to serum parathyroid hormone and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. The Tromsø study.

There are receptors for parathyroid hormone (PTH) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D in the brain, and there are clinical and experimental data indicating that PTH and vitamin D may affect cerebral function. In the present study 21 subjects who both in the 5th Tromsø study and at a follow-up examination fulfilled criteria for secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) without renal failure (serum calcium < 2.40 mmol/L, serum PTH > 6.4 pmol/L, and normal serum creatinine) and 63 control subjects were compared with tests for cognitive and emotional function. Those in the SHPT group had significantly impaired
