Stabilisation of waterlogged archaeological wood: the analysis of structural and dimensional changes of different conservation methods using magnetic resonance imaging and X-ray micro-computed tomography.

Waterlogged archaeological wood can be preserved for many years in the absence of air, as decomposition is substantially slowed down. After excavation, conservation is necessary to prevent damage of objects due to uncontrolled drying. In this study, the following conservation methods were tested to investigate their ability to stabilise the objects: alcohol-ether resin, melamine-formaldehyde (Kauramin 800), lactitol/trehalose, saccharose, polyethylene glycol (PEG 2000 with air-drying and PEG 2000 or 400 and 4000 with subsequent freeze-drying). In order to precisely understand the changes cause

Rapid and Severe Idiopathic Aseptic Necrosis of the Contralateral Femoral Head after Unilateral Total Hip Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a multifactorial disease, and agnogenic ONFH, otherwise known as idiopathic ONFH, is rare in clinic. Idiopathic ONFH that exhibits severe necrosis and progresses extremely rapidly is called rapidly destructive hip disease (RDHD). RDHD greatly affects patients but is rarely reported in clinical practice and literature. CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, a 64-year-old male patient with complete collapse and necrosis of the right femoral head complicated with severe bone destruction at 10 months after left total hip arthroplasty (THA) was re

Molecular Dynamics Refinement of Open State Serotonin 5-HT3A Receptor Structures.

Pentameric ligand-gated ion channels play an important role in mediating fast neurotransmissions. As a member of this receptor family, cation-selective 5-HT3 receptors are a clinical target for treating nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy (Thompson and Lummis, 2006). Multiple cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures of 5-HT3 receptors have been determined in distinct functional states (e.g., open, closed, etc.) (Basak et al., 2018; Basak et al., 2018; Polovinkin et al., 2018; Zhang et al., 2015). However, recent work has shown that the transmembrane pore

Lateral Deviation of the Hyoid Bone and Thyroid Cartilage Influences Prevertebral Soft-Tissue Swelling and Dysphagia After Anterior Cervical Diskectomy and Fusion.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Prevertebral soft-tissue swelling (PSTS) after anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion (ACDF) is known to be influenced by several factors. We considered the effect of lateral deviation on the traction force and attempted to find a relationship with the PSTS. This study was designed to evaluate the preoperative lateral deviation of the hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage and its effect on PSTS, airway collapse, and clinical outcomes after ACDF. METHODS: Preoperative lateral deviations of the hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage at the superior cornu and inferior cornu were

Septal extension graft use in the treatment of alar collapse.

OBJECTIVE: In our study, we showed that the septal extension graft (SEG) technique, which we applied for nasal projection in rhinoplasty surgery, increases the tension of the lateral cartilage (LC) and alar structures. We also demonstrated that nasal congestion could be treated by applying this technique in patients with nasal obstruction due to bilateral dynamic alar collapse. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was conducted retrospectively on 23 patients with nasal obstruction due to alar collapse. Bilateral dynamic nasal collapse and (+) Cottle test was present in all patients. Nasal lateral

The pathogenesis of steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head: A systematic review of the literature.

Steroid (glucocorticoid)-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (SONFH) is a metabolic disease that occurs due to the use of glucocorticoid drugs, leading to impaired blood supply to the femoral head and death of bone cells and bone marrow composition, which in turn lead to structural change, collapse of the femoral head, and articular dysfunction. SONFH is a challenging disorder to treat in adults due to frequent collapse of the femoral head and dysfunction of the hip joint. Eventually, patients require joint arthroplasty surgery, which severely impairs the patients' quality of life. Howev

Association of initial recorded rhythm and underlying cardiac disease in sudden cardiac arrest.

BACKGROUND: Asystole (ASY) and pulseless electrical activity (PEA) are increasing and ventricular fibrillation (VF) or ventricular tachycardia (VT) declining as presenting rhythms of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Since there is limited information on possible differences in the etiology of underlying structural heart disease, we analyzed the clinical and/or autopsy findings of victims with ASY, PEA or VT/VF. METHODS: All SCA cases with recorded ASY, PEA or VT/VF occurring after onset of witnessed collapse were analyzed by the emergency personnel between the years 2007-2012 within the Oulu Univ

The Application of the Posterior Atlanto-Occipital Membrane Tension Release Technique for Surgical Exposure of the Horizontal Part of the Vertebral Artery's Third Segment: An Anatomical and Clinical Investigation.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to elucidate the anatomical principles governing the surrounding venous structures (VS) of the horizontal part of the third segment of the vertebral artery (V3h) and develop a safe and bloodless surgical technique for exposing V3h. METHODS: This study used 10 formalin-infused cadaveric head specimens. The dissections were performed stepwise to simulate the far lateral approach process, exposing the V3h with a novel technique. Additionally, we applied this technique to 10 patients undergoing far or extreme lateral approaches. RESULTS: The VS surrounding V3h is divid

Irreversible mechanical weakening of amyloid-β K16 mutants via electrostatic torque.

BACKGROUND: Amyloid-beta (Aβ) fibrils act as the structural core of Alzheimer's disease pathology and maintain exceptional mechanical stability through dense β-sheet networks. However, the molecular mechanisms through which external physical stimuli disrupt these robust scaffolds remain poorly understood, particularly the residue-specific responses. METHODS: Here, we systematically evaluated the structural collapse and mechanical attenuation of Aβ fibrils and their K16 mutants, including the charge-reversal K16D and bulky K16W, under a 1.0 V/nm electric field (EF) using molecular dynamics (MD

Restoring Porosity and Uncovering Flexibility in Pillared 3D-Linker Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Porous adsorbents have emerged as leading materials for carbon capture, where pressure-controlled regeneration offers a key advantage over energy-demanding temperature swing adsorption. Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) comprised of pillared linkers are proposed to meet this need due to the unique ability to adjust their pores to maximize host-guest interactions. However, many pillared MOFs show structural collapse following activation. We highlight a new approach to constructing pillared MOFs which retain their porosity upon activation, while also showing flexibility and selective gas

Influences of head positions and bite opening on collapsibility of the passive pharynx.

A collapsible tube surrounded by soft material within a rigid box was proposed as a two-dimensional mechanical model for the pharyngeal airway. This model predicts that changes in the box size (pharyngeal bony enclosure size anatomically defined as cross-sectional area bounded by the inside edge of bony structures such as the mandible, maxilla, and spine, and being perpendicular to the airway) influence patency of the tube. We examined whether changes in the bony enclosure size either with head positioning or bite opening influence collapsibility of the pharyngeal airway. Static mechanical pro

Exploring the limit of Cu-based small-pore zeolite framework collapse during hydrothermal aging in NOx abatement from diesel vehicle exhaust.

Cu-SSZ-13 small-pore zeolites have been commercialized for NOx abatement in diesel engines, while they still suffer from hydrothermal deactivation. To identify the changes occurring in catalysts during the whole hydrothermal aging (HTA) process, the selective catalytic reduction by ammonia (NH3-SCR) performance of hydrothermally aged catalysts was investigated until total deactivation occurred. Through precisely identifying the alterations in the zeolite framework and active Cu sites during HTA, three stages were distinguished under progressively more severe HTA conditions, which were dealumin

Ageing and degenerative changes of the intervertebral disc and their impact on spinal flexibility.

PURPOSE: Degeneration of the intervertebral disc is associated with various morphological changes of the disc itself and of the adjacent structures, such as reduction of the water content, collapse of the intervertebral space, disruption and tears, and osteophytes. These morphological changes of the disc are linked to alterations of the spine flexibility. This paper aims to review the literature about the ageing and degenerative changes of the intervertebral disc and their link with alterations in spinal biomechanics, with emphasis on flexibility. METHODS: Narrative literature review. RESULT

Relapsing polychondritis in childhood: a rare observation studied by CT and MRI.

Relapsing polychondritis is very rare in children. The diagnosis must be based on a combination of clinical and pathologic features. CT is very useful for an accurate and rapid assessment of laryngo-tracheo-bronchial involvement and the typical finding is lumen narrowing by wall thickening and collapse of the supporting cartilaginous structures. The role of MR imaging should be complementary to CT.

Mechano-biological mechanisms of femoral head collapse in osteonecrosis: a multiscale zonal analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a progressive disorder characterised by vascular compromise, osteocyte loss, and regional structural deterioration that ultimately leads to femoral head collapse. Because ONFH affects the femoral head heterogeneously, understanding zone-specific structural and mechanical alterations is essential for clarifying mechanisms of structural failure. METHODS: 15 femoral heads obtained during total hip arthroplasty were analyzed using a patient-matched multiscale approach. Trabecular cores from necrotic, sclerotic, and preserved regions within

Structural characterization of the apo form of a calcium binding protein from Entamoeba histolytica by hydrogen exchange and its folding to the holo state.

One of the calcium binding proteins from Entamoeba histolytica (EhCaBP) is a 134 amino acid residue long (M(r) approximately 14.9 kDa) double domain EF-hand protein containing four Ca(2+) binding sites. CD and NMR studies reveal that the Ca(2+)-free form (apo-EhCaBP) exists in a partially collapsed form compared to the Ca(2+)-bound (holo) form, which has an ordered structure (PDB ID ). Deuterium exchange studies on the partially structured apo-EhCaBP reveal that the C-terminal domain is better structured than the N-terminal domain. The protein can be reversibly folded and unfolded upon additio

Hierarchical network structure as the source of hierarchical dynamics (power-law frequency spectra) in living and non-living systems: How state-trait continua (body plans, personalities) emerge from first principles in biophysics.

Living systems are hierarchical control systems that display a small world network structure. In such structures, many smaller clusters are nested within fewer larger ones, producing a fractal-like structure with a 'power-law' cluster size distribution (a mereology). Just like their structure, the dynamics of living systems shows fractal-like qualities: the timeseries of inner message passing and overt behavior contain high frequencies or 'states' (treble) that are nested within lower frequencies or 'traits' (bass), producing a power-law frequency spectrum that is known as a 'state-trait conti

Pressure-induced circumferential and longitudinal deformations of tracheal tubes in the American cockroach.

Insects exchange gases through a complex internal network of tubes known as tracheae, which deliver oxygen directly to tissues and remove carbon dioxide. In some species, these tracheal tubes undergo active compression, periodically collapsing and reinflating to facilitate internal airflow. The mechanical behavior of the tracheal system is governed by its structural design, which in turn influences its physiological role in respiration. Despite the critical importance of tracheal material properties in insect respiratory function, there are relatively few published studies that characterize th

Architecture-induced cascading deformation bifurcation enabling shear-band suppression in lattice metamaterials.

Architected lattice metamaterials are attractive for their lightweight load-bearing and energy-absorption capacity, but these are often limited by catastrophic inclined shear bands, analogous to the shear band behavior in conventional continuum solids. Although the macroscopic shear band in continuum solids is typically understood as an instability originating from constitutive softening, the mechanism of shear banding in discrete lattice structures remains elusive. Here, combining experiments, simulations and theoretical analysis, we find that shear-band formation in finite lattices can emerg

Pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea.

The pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been under investigation for over 25 years, during which a number of factors that contribute to upper airway (UA) collapse during sleep have been identified. Structural/anatomic factors that constrict space for the soft tissues surrounding the pharynx and its lumen are crucial to the development of OSA in many patients. Enlargement of soft tissues enveloping the pharynx, including hypertrophied tonsils, adenoids, and tongue, is also an important factor predisposing to UA collapse, inasmuch as this can impinge on the pharyngeal lumen and nar
