Obesity is a strong risk factor for the development and progression of sleep apnea. Responses to exercise by patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) are clinically relevant to reducing body weight and cardiovascular risk factors. This study aimed to clarify the aerobic and anaerobic exercise capacities and their possible relationships with other findings in patients with OSAS. Forty patients (30 males, 10 females) and 40 controls (30 males, 10 females) were enrolled in this study. Questionnaires (excessive daytime sleepiness, daytime tiredness, morning headache, waking unrefreshe

Surface electromyography (sEMG) is an important tool to estimate muscular activity at work. There is, however, a great inter-individual variation, even in carefully standardized work tasks. The sEMG signal is attenuated in the subcutaneous tissues, differently for each subject, which requires normalization. This is commonly made in relation to a reference contraction, which by itself, however, introduces a variance. A normalization method that is independent of individual motivation, motor control and pain inhibition would be desirable. The aim of the study was to explore the influence of the

The development of subcutaneous fat tissue in the US was found to follow the following stages: preschool loss, prepubertal gain, adolescent loss, stabilization, adult gain, and after top fatness, age loss. 1208 subjects 2-80 years old were studied in Maya a mixed population from Merida and Progreso (Yucatan, Mexico) measuring two fatfolds. A population of 7924 from Polish towns and villages was chosen measuring 10 fatfolds. The same pattern of fatfolds growth was found in different ethnic groups, except level of thickness and age at turning points. Adolescent loss is characteristic only for bo

PATIENT AND METHOD: We report the case of a 68-year-old man who presented a pancreatic tumor with a pancreato-vascular fistula and a Weber-Christian syndrome. Pancreatic enzymes levels at the admission were high: amylasemia 2,470 IU/L (N < 110) and lipasemia 11,700 IU/L (N < 220). The treatment consisted in total parenteral nutrition and somatostatin (100 micrograms x 3/day). Because we noted neither clinical nor biological improvement after 10 days of treatment, we performed an endoscopic retrograde pancreatography. During this examination, we put a 7 French diameter prosthesis through the Wi

In a series of 260 consecutive X-ray mammography examinations in symptomatic patients, 25 patients proved to have breast cancer, and 41 had various benign breast conditions. In the 66 patients with abnormal mammograms a real-time ultrasound examination with a 7.5 MHz linear array transducer and a fluid offset pad was performed. This paper focuses on the ultrasound aspect of the skin and the subcutaneous fat layer in various benign and malignant breast conditions. In most of the malignant tumors studied as well as in cases of fat necrosis and breast abscesses, the following ultrasound signs wer

Immunologic evaluation of a patient with pancreatitis, subcutaneous fat necrosis, pleuritis, pericarditis and synovitis is presented. The previously recognized syndrome of pancreatic disease, subcutaneous fat necrosis and arthritis is reviewed. Based on analysis of all the cases described in the English language literature it is suggested that this syndrome be expanded to include polyserositis rather than arthritis alone. Although experimental and clinical evidence tends to implicate physiocochemical tissue injury by pancreatic lipase as the primary pathogenic mechanism in this syndrome, studi

BACKGROUND: Vacuum bell therapy is increasingly used as a nonoperative treatment for pectus excavatum (PE). However, whether this intervention induces subcutaneous fat thickening and the mechanisms underlying such changes remain uncertain. This study aimed to quantify vacuum bell-associated adipose tissue changes and clarify their clinical implications.
METHODS: Patients with PE treated with vacuum bell therapy at our center between July 2022 and January 2024 underwent low-dose chest computed tomography at treatment initiation and after one year of therapy. Measured parameters included the Ha

BackgroundSubcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) of the newborn is a rare panniculitis. It is characterized by erythematous, indurated nodules or plaques involving the back, buttocks, or extremities. Although the lesions usually resolve spontaneously, SCFN can be complicated by hypercalcemia. This complication may lead to significant morbidity and mortality. This review summarizes the risk factors, timing, and complications of hypercalcemia in SCFN.MethodThis review followed the PRISMA 2020 statement (Registration ID: CRD420251145895). OBJECTIVE: Currently, no uniform standard exists for the maximum drainage volume permitting chest tube removal following lobectomy in lung cancer patients, and limited research has explored factors influencing postoperative drainage. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between subcutaneous fat area (SFA) and postoperative drainage volume.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 509 lung cancer patients who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy. Clinical characteristics, postoperative outcomes (length of stay, hospitalization expenses), blood parameters, chest

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SFNN) is a rare panniculitis that is characterized by the presence of skin nodules. Although SFNN is a self-limited benign disease, effective follow-up is highly recommended to detect hypercalcemia and other complications early on. A male newborn was admitted twice to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The first NICU admission was for hypoglycemia, and the second was due to late-onset sepsis, in which reddish nodules were detected on the back, flanks, shoulders, and posterior aspects of the legs. At 44 days old, the infant was referred to the eme

Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a rare adenocarcinoma that usually occurs in areas of the body that are rich in apocrine sweat glands. Great depth of tumor invasion is a well-known risk factor for worse prognosis. Paget cells usually are limited to the epidermis, whereas invasive EMPD, which infiltrates the dermis, is relatively rare. It is even rarer for the tumor to spread beyond the dermis. Only 3.1% of patients with EMPD of the penis and scrotum have exhibited infiltration of the subcutaneous fat layer. We report a case of a 62-year-old male with EMPD that invaded the subcutaneous fat

A 72-year-old man underwent hemodialysis because of end-stage renal failure. The patient often suffered acute pancreatitis and was diagnosed with main duct type intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm(IPMN). Moreover, skin erythema with pain occurred and was treated as cellulitis using antibiotics; however, the skin lesions did not improve. Skin pathological findings indicated subcutaneous nodular fat necrosis due to pancreatitis. Subtotal stomach-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed, and the skin erythema with pain symptoms were relieved. The final diagnoses were ampullary carcino

BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SCFN) is a rare disease occurring in the first days of life. Characteristically, the infants show hard nodules in subcutaneous tissue, purple or erythematous in color and appear on the upper back, cheeks, buttocks and limbs. In most cases, SCFN is a self-limiting disease, as the nodules disappear in up to 6 months. A severe complication associated with SCFN is hypercalcaemia. Pathophysiological mechanisms causing SCFN or associated hypercalcaemia are not fully understood yet.
METHODS: A systematic literature research including the six bigg

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) is inflammation and necrosis of adipose tissue associated with hypoxia and hypothermia. It leads to various metabolic abnormalities, of which the most dreaded is hypercalcaemia. We report a case of a 7-week-old boy with history of birth asphyxia (hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy stage 3) who presented to us with features suggestive of hypercalcaemia with bilateral nephrocalcinosis. On examination, there were multiple subcutaneous nodules on both arms. Evaluation revealed suppressed parathyroid activity along with low levels of 25(OH)vitamin D3 and elevated 1,25

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SFNN) is a rare, self-resolving panniculitis. The onset of skins lesions occurs within the first week of life, with a median age of onset around day 6 of life (range 1-70). About 50% of neonates with SFNN will develop hypercalcemia in the first month though some present later. Typically, SFNN develops prior to hypercalcemia. Only half of the neonates have classic symptoms of hypercalcemia; routine screening for hypercalcemia is recommended for neonates with SFNN or at-risk. The mechanism for hypercalcemia is usually aberrant 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D syn

OBJECTIVE: Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) is a rare condition that may occur in the neonatal period. SCFN is an inflammatory disorder of the adipose tissue, usually found in full-term healthy infants who have a history of intrauterine or perinatal distress. It is usually a self-limited condition; however, in some cases, it can get complicated, leading to severe hypercalcemia that may be life-threatening.
STUDY DESIGN: We report and describe a classic presentation of SCFN that led to severe hypercalcemia refractory to standard treatment. The diagnosis of SCFN was made based on the finding of

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the abdominal fat pad is considered to be a minimally invasive procedure for diagnosing systemic amyloidosis. However, this procedure is sometimes difficult and can be dangerous for elderly patients whose abdominal fat layer is thin because of malnutrition. In such cases, alternative diagnostic methods are required. We report three elderly patients with heart failure complicated by malnutrition. In all cases, electrocardiogram showed low voltage in the limb leads and a pseudoinfarct pattern in the chest leads, and echocardiography showed left ventricular wall t

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) of the newborn is an uncommon dermatologic disorder characterized by firm, palpable subcutaneous nodules or plaques with or without erythema. Despite its benign course, SCFN may become complicated by extracutaneous manifestations. Hypercalcemia is considered a rare complication, but it is potentially fatal if unrecognized. During the last several years therapeutic hypothermia (TH) became an essential new therapeutic modality for severe neonatal asphyxia. We report a neonate who presented with SCFN and hypercalcemia following hypothermia therapy for hypoxic isch

OBJECTIVE: To examine the cross-sectional association between hostility and measures of abdominal fat (visceral, subcutaneous) in middle-aged African American and white women. Because fat-patterning characteristics are known to differ by race, we were particularly interested in examining whether these associations were similar for women of both racial/ethnic groups.
METHODS: Participants were 418 (45% African American, 55% white) middle-aged women from the Chicago site of the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation. Visceral and subcutaneous fat were measured by computed tomographic scans a
