Although damage to the veins of Batson's epidural plexus is usually considered the origin of bleeding in traumatic lumbar puncture, a lesion of these veins would not explain the cases in which postmortem examination shows blood confined to the subdural and subarachnoid spaces. In two patients who had lumbar punctures a few days before death, there was subarachnoid hematoma of the cauda equina at autopsy. In one of these cases, the radicular vessels were shown to be the source of bleeding. Spinal subarachnoid and subdural hemorrhages after lumbar puncture may be due to laceration of radicular v

Intracranial pressure was raised by expansion of a supratentorial subdural ballon in anaesthetized baboons. Pressures were measured at several sites, both supratentorial and infratentorial, and cerebral blood flow was measured in each cerebral hemisphere separately. Pressures recorded from the right and left lateral ventricles corresponded closely throughout. Highly significant correlations were also obtained between the pressures in the right and left subdural spaces and the mean intraventricular pressure. There was, thus, no evidence of intracompartmental pressure gradients within the suprat

INTRODUCTION: Intracranial subdural tubercular empyema is an extremely rare entity. To our knowledge, only one such case has been previously reported in the pediatric population (Cayli et al. J Neurosurg 94(6):988-991, 2001). We report a case of intracranial tubercular subdural empyema in a child, with both convexity and interhemispheric fissure involvement.
CASE MATERIAL: A 12-year-old boy with history of exposure to an active case of pulmonary tuberculosis (his father) presented to our institution with features of raised intracranial pressure and fever for 1 month and altered sensorium for

There are several treatment modalities for the management of subdural fluid collection in infants, such as fontanelle puncture and drainage, burr hole irrigation, and subduroperitoneal shunt. This report describes the case of a girl born with congenital neurological impairment due to severe injury of the brain with unknown etiology. At five months of age, she suffered from head trauma and developed somnolence after three days and was diagnosed with a bilateral massive chronic subdural hematoma. Normal fundoscopy did not confirm the non-accidental head trauma. Neuroendoscopy using a single burr

OBJECT: To establish a human monocytic leukemia model with central nervous system infiltration in BALB/c nude mice.
METHODS: BALB/c nu/nu mice, pretreated by splenectomy, cytoxan intraperitoneal injection, and sublethal irradiation, were transplanted intravenously with human monocytic leukemic cell line SHI-1. The leukemic cells engrafted in the mice were traced by RT-PCR, histopathological examination, immunohistochemistry and FCM.
RESULT: After engraftment of SHI-1 cells in SCI-nu/nu mice, multiple organs were involved and green solid neoplasms were formed in some organs. Paralysis was dev

BACKGROUND: Chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) is a common neurosurgical condition with increasing prevalence in the aged population. Burr-hole surgery is the most common and effective treatment. However, subsequent pneumocephalus is a complication and has been a cause leading to recurrence and reoperation. This study aims to describe a novel technique to eliminate pneumocephalus via subdural catheter following subdural hematoma evacuation, as a method to reduce subdural potential space and decrease recurrence.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 52 patients who underwent burr-hole craniotomy

INTRODUCTION: Subdural hygroma is a known complication of Sylvian fissure arachnoid cysts (SACs). However, most of the data in the literature refer to spontaneous or posttraumatic occurrence of subdural hygromas, regarded as either a favorable or an unfavorable event. Little is known about this phenomenon as a consequence of the surgical management of SACs. The present study was carried out to evaluate the significance of postoperative subdural hygromas in children with temporal arachnoid cysts, who have been treated with craniotomy and wide marsupialization of the cystic membrane.

The case of man of 32 years with an epidermoid of the left side of the skull is reported. The tumor itself was asymptomatic and was discovered accidentally because of a subdural hematoma on the same side. After a closed head injury, this patient had symptoms of an intracranial space occupying lesion (hematoma) on the left after a symptom-free interval. The left carotid angiogram demonstrated the characteristic picture of a subdural hematoma in the left parieto-temporo-occipital region. At the same time, characteristic changes in the skull on the same side, which were more apparent after remova

Chronic subdural hematoma (c-SDH) is a frequent and serious neurological disease. It develops due to hemorrhage to the subdural space, mainly caused by head trauma. The middle meningeal artery (MMA) plays a critical role in the supply of blood to c-SDH. The decision on the type of treatment for c-SDH depends mainly on clinical and imaging evaluation. In cases in which patients are critically ill, the hematoma must be evacuated immediately. For this purpose, surgery is generally accepted as the mainstay of treatment. Among surgical techniques, twist-drill craniotomy, burr-hole craniotomy, and c

Congenital dermal sinus(CDS)is a rare entity of spinal dysraphism, caused by the focal failure of disjunction leading to adhesion between the cutaneous and neural ectoderm. Some reports found that tumors, such as dermoid and epidermoid cysts, meningitis and subdural abscess are often complicated by CDS. A 1-year-old girl was referred to our department for CDS with a dermoid cyst complicated by brain and subdural abscesses. Diffusion weighted imaging and gadolinium-diethylenetriamine penta-aceticacid administration revealed ring-enhancing lesions, suggesting brain abscess, in the left temporal

OBJECTIVE: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is frequently met in neurosurgical practice and often need urgent surgical treatment in case of neurological deterioration. Different surgical approaches to evacuate CSDH are described in the literature. In our experience, an external drainage system is crucial in order to avoid recurrences. We recently encountered a case of subcutaneous CSF collection after drainage removal. Thus, we developed a simple surgical technique to prevent postoperative CSF leak after subdural drainage system removal.
METHOD: We have developed a technique in which the peri

INTRODUCTION: Spinal Subdural hematoma is a rare cause of radiculopathy and spinal cord compression syndromes. It's early diagnosis is essential. Chronological appearance of these bleeds vary on MRI.
CASE REPORT: A 56 year old man presented with progressive left lower limb radiculopathy and paraesthesias with claudication of three days duration. MRI revealed a subdural space occupying lesion compressing the cauda equina at L5-S1 level producing a 'Y' shaped dural sac (Y sign), which was hyperintense on T1W imaging and hypointense to cord on T2W image. The STIR sequence showed hyperintensity t

INTRODUCTION: Spinal subdural abscess (SSA) or empyema is a rare pathology and its exact incidence is unknown. Staphylococcus aureus (S aureus) is the most frequently responsible organism. The patients with SSA may have one or more predisposing immunosuppressive conditions. However, here we report a rare case of SSA following food intoxication without any significant comorbidities.
CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old healthy man presenting with fever, severe low back pain (LBP), and trunk motion restriction was transferred to our hospital. He had been treated for an unknown fever after food intoxicati

Hypertensive crisis is a serious medical condition defined as severely elevated blood pressure; typically the systolic blood pressure is above 180 mmHg, and/or the diastolic blood pressure is above 120 mmHg. Hypertensive crises are divided into two categories: hypertensive urgency and hypertensive emergency. Hypertensive urgency is asymptomatic while hypertensive emergency presents with end-organ damage requiring more aggressive blood-pressure lowering. The common presentations for neurological end-organ dysfunction in conjunction with hypertensive emergency include ischemic strokes, intracran

BACKGROUND Chronic subdural hematoma is defined as collection in the subdural space for more than 3 weeks. The incidence ranges from 1 to 20 per 100 000/year, with increased prevalence in the elderly, in males, and with use of anticoagulants or antiplatelets. Chronic myeloid leukemia has been linked to spontaneous subdural hematoma, with the highest reported cases of 39 patients in Korea, but no management is mentioned in that paper. There are few reported cases of patients who are medically free with no use of anticoagulants, diagnosed as having a subdural hematoma and then later discovered t

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an ongoing viral pandemic that has affected modern medical practice and can complicate known pathology. The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes symptoms that may mimic a viral pneumonia, with potential for serious sequelae, including acute respiratory distress syndrome, coagulopathy, multiorgan dysfunction, systemic vascular abnormalities, and secondary infection.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors describe a case of a 15-year-old boy who presented with a right subdural empyema and sinusitis while having active CO

BACKGROUND: Dural arteriovenous fistula (AVF) without cortical venous reflux (CVR) has a relatively benign course. Here, the authors describe a patient presenting with subdural hematoma due to a middle meningeal AVF without CVR.
OBSERVATIONS: A 17-year-old male was admitted to the emergency department with acute headache without an episode of head trauma. Computed tomography demonstrated a left acute subdural hematoma (SDH). Because the nontraumatic SDH raised the suspicion of vascular pathology, emergent angiography was performed, which demonstrated an AVF fed by the middle meningeal artery

BACKGROUND: Intracranial subdural hematoma is an exceptionally rare complication of spinal anesthesia. We report a case of this infrequent event and consider the influence of cerebral atrophy as a predisposing factor.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This 18-year-old woman with severe headaches was admitted to the hospital 42 days after delivery. She had a history of normal pregnancy and uneventful labor and delivery. The epidural anesthesia was satisfactory. Computed tomography showed bilateral chronic subdural hematomas that were surgically removed. An early follow-up scan showed marked resolution of t
