Sun protection by umbrellas and walls.

Solar protection is an important public health issue because solar UV exposure can cause acute and chronic damage to the skin. Seeking shade is a convenient and commonly practiced sun avoidance measure. Shade works by physically shielding the skin from direct UV rays; however UV rays can also reach the skin from other angles. It is not clear how protective the widely-used shade structures like umbrellas and walls are under actual use conditions. In this study, a sky view model was applied to systematically assess the influence of different factors to umbrellas and walls, including the transmis

Long-term development of parental knowledge about skin cancer risks in Germany: Has it changed for the better?

Substantial public health efforts have been undertaken throughout the last 25years to increase awareness about skin cancer risks in the German population. An evaluation of long-term effects of these awareness campaigns and preventive activities on the population level and in specific subgroups is yet lacking. We address the temporal development of knowledge about skin cancer risk factors and agreement to the necessity of sun protection in different outdoor situations among parents of young children. We compiled data from four population-based surveys comprising data from 8184 parents of 3- to

Beliefs, attitudes and perceptions to sun-tanning behaviour in the Norwegian population: a cross-sectional study using the health belief model.

BACKGROUND: Norway has one of the highest incidences of melanoma in the world. It has been suggested that the majority of all skin cancers could be prevented by changes related to sun-tanning behaviour. This study explores the sun-tanning behaviour of the Norwegian population using a modified Health Belief Model (HBM). Increased knowledge about beliefs, attitudes and sun-tanning behaviour can provide information which may be useful for future sun protection interventions. METHODS: In 2017, 1004 members of the Norwegian population completed cross-sectional online surveys. People who seek the s

Modulations of gene expression induced by daily ultraviolet light can be prevented by a broad spectrum sunscreen.

Realistic non-zenithal solar ultraviolet (UV) exposure, obtained using standard ultraviolet daylight spectrum (DUVR), has deleterious impact on epidermal and dermal compartments of human skin. The present study was designed to assess gene expression in human reconstructed skin following exposure to DUVR and the protective effect of a broad spectrum sunscreen. Reconstructed skins were exposed to a realistic daily UV dose of 12 J/cm(2) DUVR in the presence of a sunscreen product (Sun(burn) Protection Factor (SPF)=13 and UVA protection factor UVAPF (PPD) 10.5) or its vehicle. Six hours post expos

Assessment of Natural Sunlight Protection Provided by 10 High-SPF Broad-Spectrum Sunscreens and Sun-Protective Fabrics.

In 1978, the FDA Advisory Panel proposed both indoor and natural sunlight SPF testing methods but reverted to indoor testing only in 1993. Today's sunscreen sun protection and broad-spectrum claims are based on mandated clinical tests using solar simulators and in vitro spectrophotometers. This research evaluated the protection of 10 high-SPF (30-110), broad-spectrum sunscreen products, as well as 6 sun-protective fabrics against natural sunlight in Arequipa, Peru. Each of the 17 subjects was exposed to natural sunlight for 1 h and 59 min under clear skies, with temperatures and humidity simil

Improving sun-safe knowledge, attitude and behaviour in parents of primary school children: a pilot study.

Excessive sun exposure, mainly in childhood, represents one of the major skin cancer risk factors. Sun protection habits should start early in life to be effective. The purpose of this study was to investigate knowledge, attitude and sun protection behaviour in parents (P) and in their children (C). The educational intervention addressed the parents of 131 primary school pupils in Valencia, Spain, during the school year 2007-2008. A self-administered pre- and post-intervention questionnaire was handed in during school hours to be filled in by parents. Parents' compliance was very high (88 %).

A microcomputer program to predict sunburn exposure.

A simple microcomputer program written in BASIC calculates the time that can be spent in the sun without risk of sunburn. Seven data are requested by the computer: (1) the month, (2) the weather conditions, (3) the subject's complexion, (4) the subject's activity outdoors, (5) the sun protection factor if a sunscreen is used, (6) the latitude on the Earth's surface, and (7) the time of day at which sun exposure begins. The calculated "safe exposure time" is an estimate for the time to give a minimal erythema dose--a just visible sunburn.

"We Don't Really Do Anything Unless it's Really Bad": Understanding Adolescent Sun Protective Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviors in the U.S.

Risk factors for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, include lifetime sun exposure and a history of sunburns. However, a minority of adolescents report consistent engagement in sun protective behaviors. The few sun protection interventions that have targeted adolescents have had little effect on behavior change, which suggests that a better understanding of the issue, especially from the adolescents' perspective, is needed. Although efforts to qualitatively examine adolescent sun protection have been carried out in a handful of countries, no studies to date have focused on U.S. adoles

[Local sunscreening agents--why, when, how and where?].

Sunscreens are used primarily to protect against sunburn. The cosmetic benefits of sunscreens have been widely accepted with the recent indictment of photoaging as a major cause of wrinkles. It is not so well known that sunscreens also protect against the development of carcinomatous processes in the skin. It is important to protect against UV-A as well as against UV-B because UV-A has an additional effect and can also itself initiate cancer. We advocate use of sunscreens with a high sun protection factor. It is of utmost importance to protect children against the deleterious effects of the su

Rural-Urban Differences in Sun Exposure and Protection Behaviors in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding whether rural residence is a risk factor for skin cancer is mixed. We compared sun exposure and protection behaviors between rural and urban residents by ethno-racial group in the United States. METHODS: We analyzed data from three (2013-2018) National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cycles. We compared self-reported sun exposure and protection measures (sunburn, time spent outside, sunscreen use, wearing long sleeves, staying in shade) by rural-urban residential status using survey-weighted logistic regression models stratified by ethno-racial group, ad

Sun care advertising in popular U.S. magazines.

PURPOSE: We assessed the placement of magazine advertising for sun care products to lay the groundwork for broader promotion to more diverse and high-risk demographic groups. METHODS: We reviewed 579 issues of 24 magazines published between the months of May and September from 1997 to 2002. We conducted a cover-to-cover review of top-selling magazines for men, women, teens, parents, travelers, and outdoor recreation users. We determined if there were any advertisements for the following sun care products: sun tanning lotions containing sun protection factor (SPF), sunless tanners without SPF,

Family Attitudes and Communication about Sun Protection and Sun Protection Practices among Young Adult Melanoma Survivors and Their Family Members.

Young melanoma survivors and their family are at increased risk for developing melanoma, but seldom engage in sun protection behaviors. Little is known about the role of family factors in sun protection. Our goals were: 1) examine correspondence between survivors and family sun protection, individual attitudes, and family attitudes and communication about risk-reducing behaviors, and; 2) evaluate the mediating role of family attitudes and communication in the association between individual sun protection attitudes and behavior. Measures of individual attitudes, family attitudes and communicati

Knowledge Gaps on Skin Cancer and Sun Protection in Organ Transplant Recipients Under Long-term Immunosuppression.

Organ transplant recipients (OTRs) face an elevated risk of skin cancer due to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure and the need for chronic immunosuppression. Patient education is essential for early skin cancer detection and prevention. This cross-sectional study evaluated knowledge and attitudes regarding sun protection and skin cancer among 177 OTRs during their routine check-up at a specialized dermatologic outpatient clinic in a German University Hospital, using the validated Skin Cancer and Sun Knowledge (SCSK) scale. Demographic, clinical and transplant-related variables were analysed

Sunscreen use and sun exposure. Trends in a white population.

Four hundred eighty-nine patients were surveyed during the summer months to evaluate their sun-exposure habits and beliefs, and their use of sunscreens. Seventy-one percent had one or more hours of sun exposure on at least one day per week. Men had more sun exposure than women. Subjects 30 years old and younger spent more time in the sun than those older than 30 years. Subjects with skin types 1 and 2 were least frequently sun exposed and tended to use sunscreens most often. Overall, sunscreens were used by 41% of the subjects, one third of whom used them with the belief that tanning would be

Photoprotection and antioxidant activity of eumelanin from Streptomyces lasalocidi NTB 42 and its photoprotective effects on Schizosaccharomyces pombe ARC039.

This study evaluated the photoprotective and antioxidant properties of eumelanin derived from Streptomyces lasalocidi NTB 42 (eumelanin NTB 42). This study also investigated the cellular-level photoprotective effects of eumelanin using Schizosaccharomyces pombe ARC039 as a model organism and its ability to enhance the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of commercial sunscreens. The thermal and light stability and total phenolic and flavonoid contents were analyzed. Antioxidant activity was assessed using hydroxyl radicals (OH), and superoxide anions (O2.-) radical-scavenging assays. The efficacy of p

Lichenic extracts and metabolites as UV filters.

Three lichen extracts and ten lichenic compounds have been screened for their photoprotective activities. The determination of their Sun Protection Factor (SPF) and Protection Factor-UVA (PF-UVA) values was done in vitro. Among them, a Lasallia pustulata extract and gyrophoric acid exhibited SPF values over 5, which is better than Homosalate (SPF≈4). Their photoprotective properties are only slightly modified after a 2-hours period of irradiation. Salazinic acid and L. pustulata presented characteristics of a UVA booster like the butyl-methoxydibenzoylmethane (Avobenzone) (PF-UVA≈2 vs. 2.8 for

Sunscreens: efficacy, use, and misuse.

To provide a rational approach in the selection and use of sunscreens, we have reviewed some aspects of sun damage, the importance of genetically determined skin types, and the skin's natural protective mechanisms. In this review, we classify sunscreens, explain the sun protection factor (SPF), discuss characteristic features of specific sunscreens, supply guidelines for tanning while minimizing skin damage, and indicate which products and devices may be harmful to consumers.
