The wild boar (Sus scrofa Linnaeus, 1758) as secondary reservoir of Fasciola hepatica in Galicia (NW Spain).

Fasciolosis is an emerging or reemerging human and animal disease in numerous parts of the world. In Galicia (NW, Spain), the wild boar (Sus scrofa) is the main wild ungulate in terms of abundance and distribution. Its population has continuously increased over the past decades and this population growth has been accompanied by a reduction of habitats, so that the wild boar populations encroach more and more frequently onto agricultural lands. The increase of the interface area between livestock and the wild boars frequently involves the sharing of pastures and water sources, so that the circu

Spontaneous Aujeszky's disease (pseudorabies) in European wild boars (Sus scrofa) in the federal state of Brandenburg, Germany.

In this report two cases of spontaneous Aujeszky's disease (AD, syn. pseudorabies) in European wild boars (Sus scrofa), in the federal state of Brandenburg, Germany, are described. Both animals displayed severe central nervous disturbances, including loss of fear of humans, disorientation, and tremors of head and limbs, and were shot by hunters for laboratory exclusion of rabies. The main finding in the well nourished, juvenile (approx. 7-8 months) animals was a non-suppurative panencephalitis characterized by neuronal necroses, intranucelar eosinophilic inclusion bodies in necrotic neurons, s

A serological survey of Brucella spp. in free-ranging wild boar (Sus scrofa leucomystax) in Shikoku, Japan.

Brucella, a causative agent of brucellosis and facultative intracellular pathogen, has been isolated recently from a variety of wild mammals. In this study, serum samples from 115 Japanese wild boar (Sus Scrofa leucomystax) killed by hunters in the 4 Prefectures of Shikoku, Japan were tested for antibodies to Brucella spp. by means of the tube agglutination test (TAT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using antigens extracted with n-lauroylsarcosine. In 9 of the 115 samples (7.8%) antibodies to Brucella spp. were detected by TAT and ELISA. These results suggest that wild boar in Sh

Efficacy of deterrents in minimizing nontarget species consumption of bait used for attracting wild pigs (Sus scrofa).

BACKGROUND: Wild pigs (Sus scrofa) are an invasive species that cause environmental and agricultural damage. Trapping is a common management tool, but baits often attract nontarget species, reducing bait availability and trap effectiveness. Using remote cameras, we compared untreated corn with corn treated with egg-garlic repellent (EGR), blood meal, synthetic capsaicin and natural capsaicin to evaluate whether deterrents could reduce nontarget bait consumption while maintaining wild pig visits. RESULTS: Generalized linear mixed models revealed white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) consu

A de novo genome assembly of an Angelman syndrome pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) model to resolve SNHG14.

Pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) are used as biomedical and preclinical models for their comparable anatomy, physiology, and neurodevelopment to humans. Angelman syndrome is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder, caused by the loss of the maternal Ubiquitin protein ligase E3A (UBE3A) allele, that was recently modeled and characterized in Yorkshire/Landrace pigs. The paternal UBE3A allele is intact but silenced in neurons of the central nervous system by the long non-coding RNA and polycistronic transcription unit Small Nuclear Host Gene 14 (SNHG14). Targeting SNHG14 to reactivate the paternal

Microbiological control project of minced meat of wild boar (Sus scrofa L.) in approved establishments in Sweden.

The aims of this study were to enhance knowledge of microbiological status of minced meat of Swedish wild boar and to evaluate its compliance with the Commission Regulation (EC) No 2073/2005 on microbiological criteria for foodstuffs. The sampling was performed by the official control staff at Swedish Food Agency during 2024. While wild boar has the capacity to harbor a diverse range of zoonotic agents there is a lack of microbiological data on the products derived from wild boar carcasses. More information concerning the microbiological status of minced meat of wild boar is needed. These resu

Social context influences Toxoplasma gondii and Trichinella spp. infection in Alberta free-roaming wild pigs (Sus scrofa).

The increasing spread of wild pigs across Canada is concerning due to their potential role as reservoirs for zoonotic diseases, including trichinosis and toxoplasmosis. Trichinosis is caused by the parasitic nematode Trichinella spp. and can manifest clinically in humans. Likewise, the intracellular protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is a significant global foodborne and waterborne parasite responsible for toxoplasmosis. Despite wild pigs being recognized globally as reservoirs for T. gondii and Trichinella spp., the status of wild pigs in Alberta remains undetermined. Wild pig diaphragms we

Leptospira spp. Antibody in Wild Boars (Sus scrofa), Hunting Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), and Hunters of Brazil.

Hunting activities are a potential risk factor for human infection with Leptospira spp. and, although wild boar seroprevalence has been studied, there are no concurrent serosurveys of wild boars (Sus scrofa), hunting dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), and hunters. The aim of our study was to assess the seroprevalence of Leptospira spp. antibodies in free-ranging wild boars, hunting dogs, and hunters, and risk factors associated with exposure in southern and central-western Brazil. Leptospira spp. antibodies were serologically detected using the microscopic agglutination test, with a total 30 serov

Trichinella spp. in wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations in Croatia during an eight-year study (2010-2017).

Wild animals represent a constant source of Trichinella spp. infections for domestic animals and humans. To date, four species of Trichinella have been isolated in wild boar populations in Europe: T. pseudospiralis, T. spiralis, T. britovi and T. nativa, in addition to several mixed infection types and one hybrid formation between T. britovi and T. spiralis. Meanwhile, insufficiently thermally processed wild boar meat has been reported to be a source of trichinellosis in humans in several European countries. In Croatia, there have been no reported or proven cases of trichinellosis caused by wi

Serosurvey of anti-Neospora caninum antibodies in wild boars (Sus scrofa), hunting dogs and hunters of Brazil.

The protozoan Neospora caninum is an important cause of abortion in cattle worldwide, with domestic dogs serving as the definitive hosts. Although hunting activities have been indicated as a potential risk factor for N. caninum infection in dogs, no serological evidence has so far been reported in hunting dogs, wild boars (Sus scrofa), and hunters. A total of 98 wild boars, 168 hunting dogs, and 15 hunters from three Brazilian regions were sampled and tested for anti-N. caninum antibodies by indirect immunofluorescence antibody test, resulting in 15/168 (9%) seropositive hunting dogs, and 0/98

Seroprevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in wild boars (Sus scrofa), hunting dogs, and hunters of Brazil.

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii has been extensively studied in wild boars worldwide due to the emerging risk for human infection through meat consumption. However, this is the first study that reports toxoplasmosis seroprevalence in wild boars, wild boar hunters and their hunting dogs. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii antibodies in the complex wild boars, hunting dogs and hunters, and to determine the risk factors associated with seropositivity in southern and central-western Brazil. Overall, anti-T. gondii seropositivity was observed in 15

Pseudorabies Virus and Brucella abortus from an Expanding Wild Pig ( Sus scrofa ) Population in Southern Oklahoma, USA.

Wild pigs ( Sus scrofa ) are causing increasing ecologic and economic damage at a global scale. Because wild pigs can carry ≥65 diseases that affect livestock, their widespread expansion threatens native wildlife and livestock. We screened wild pigs from south-central Oklahoma, US for antibodies against Brucella abortus , pseudorabies virus (PRV), and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRS). These pathogens were chosen because they are part of eradication programs in the US and could have large economic impacts on domestic livestock if transmitted from wild animals. We teste

Intravenous cobinamide versus hydroxocobalamin for acute treatment of severe cyanide poisoning in a swine (Sus scrofa) model.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Hydroxocobalamin is a Food and Drug Administration-approved antidote for cyanide poisoning. Cobinamide is a potential antidote that contains 2 cyanide-binding sites. To our knowledge, no study has directly compared hydroxocobalamin with cobinamide in a severe, cyanide-toxic large-animal model. Our objective is to compare the time to return of spontaneous breathing in swine with acute cyanide-induced apnea treated with intravenous hydroxocobalamin, intravenous cobinamide, or saline solution (control). METHODS: Thirty-three swine (45 to 55 kg) were intubated, anesthetized, and

Novel technique for retroperitoneal implantation of telemetry transmitters for physiologic monitoring in Göttingen minipigs (Sus scrofa domesticus).

Telemetric monitoring of physiologic parameters in animal models is a critical component of chemical and biologic agent studies. The long-term collection of neurobehavioral and other physiologic data can require larger telemetry devices. Furthermore, such devices must be implanted in a location that is safe, well-tolerated, and functional. Göttingen minipigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) present an ideal large animal model for chemical agent studies due to their relatively small size, characterized health status, and ease of training and handling. We report an effective approach to implanting a nove

First molecular identification and phylogeny of a Babesia sp. from a symptomatic sow (Sus scrofa Linnaeus 1758).

Porcine babesiosis is a widespread yet overlooked disease causing economic losses in many regions of the world. To date, the etiological agent of porcine babesiosis has not been molecularly characterized. Here, we provide the first molecular characterization of a piroplasm detected in a symptomatic sow, phylogenetically closely related to the Ungulibabesids. Results pave the way for future molecular epidemiology studies.

Epidemiologic survey for Brucella suis biovar 2 in a wild boar (Sus scrofa) population in northwest Italy.

In 2001, antibodies to Brucella spp. were detected in the wild boar (Sus scrofa) population of Regional Park in the Piedmont, northwest Italy. This was the first report of swine brucellosis in Italian wildlife, and in response, we conducted a survey on wild boars culled in the park to evaluate the presence and epidemiologic pattern of Brucella. In total, 2,267 serum samples and 1,841 tissue samples were collected and tested from 2001 to 2007. Differences in antibody and infection prevalence among sampling years were statistically significant (chi(2)=28.2, P<0.0001 and chi(2)=27.8, P<0.0001, re

Repair of a Full-thickness Eyelid Defect With a Bilamellar Full-thickness Autograft in a Porcine Model (Sus scrofa).

PURPOSE: It has been demonstrated the pedicle of a tarsoconjunctival flap advancement does not appear to supply the flap itself and the vascularization of the remaining eyelid/tear film is thought to offer adequate nourishment for survival of the flap; as such, a swine model was constructed to assess the viability of a bilamellar autograft for repair of large full-thickness eyelid defects. METHODS: Full-thickness defects of varying sizes were created in each lower eyelid of 4 Yorkshire/Yorkshire crossed swine. The defects were then closed with a full-thickness ipsilateral graft from the upper
