Hydrochromic conjugated polymers for human sweat pore mapping.

Hydrochromic materials have been actively investigated in the context of humidity sensing and measuring water contents in organic solvents. Here we report a sensor system that undergoes a brilliant blue-to-red colour transition as well as 'Turn-On' fluorescence upon exposure to water. Introduction of a hygroscopic element into a supramolecularly assembled polydiacetylene results in a hydrochromic conjugated polymer that is rapidly responsive (<20 μs), spin-coatable and inkjet-compatible. Importantly, the hydrochromic sensor is found to be suitable for mapping human sweat pores. The exceedingly

Nickel release from nickel particles in artificial sweat.

Nickel is widely used in a broad range of products, primarily made of alloys, used by humans on a daily basis. Previous assessments have shown that skin contact with some such products may cause nickel allergic contact dermatitis, induced by the release of nickel. However, data on nickel release from small nickel particles in artificial sweat for assessment of potential risks of workers in nickel-producing and nickel-using facilities are not available. The objective of this study was to fill this knowledge gap by determining nickel release from fine nickel powder ( approximately 4 microm diame

Topical botulinum toxin to treat hyperhidrosis? No sweat!

Palmar, plantar and axillary hyperhidrosis, though benign, may be burdensome and occupationally restrictive, even hazardous. Treatment modalities range from topical antiperspirants, iontophoresis, systemic medications such as anticholinergics and benzodiazepines and injections of botulinum toxin, to thoracic sympathectomy. Intradermal injections of botulinum toxin (BTX), though effective, are painful especially when multiple injections are required. Iontophoretic administration of BTX has been described, the BTX entering the eccrine sweat glands via the sweat pores and through the sweat ducts.

Primary sweat gland carcinosarcoma of the scrotal skin.

BACKGROUND: Carcinosarcoma is a biphasic tumor composed of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal elements. Although the tumors have been reported in different locations, they rarely occur in the skin and have not been reported in the skin of external genitalia. CASE REPORT: We present such a case in a 71-year-old Taiwanese man. He had had a long-term indolent nodule on scrotal skin, but it enlarged rapidly in 2 weeks. Wide excision of the tumor was performed. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The pathologic examination revealed a sweat gland carcinosarcoma consisting of admixed mucin-producing adenocar

Caffeine demethylation monitoring using a transdermal sweat patch.

Caffeine and two metabolites (paraxanthine and theobromine) were quantitated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using extracts from transdermal sweat patches that continuously collected and stored analytes lost through the skin. Following caffeine consumption, remarkably clean chromatograms were obtained with minimal sample preparation. Caffeine and paraxanthine accumulated in the patch at comparable rates, and theobromine accumulated more slowly. A major urinary metabolite, 1-methylxanthine, was notably absent in sweat-patch and plasma extracts, a finding which favors a renal so

Hyperhidrosis - Sweating Sites Matter: Quality of Life in Primary Hyperhidrosis according to the Sweating Sites Measured by SF-36.

BACKGROUND: Primary hyperhidrosis has negative impacts on quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the impacts of primary hyperhidrosis on quality of life are different depending on the localisation of the sweating. METHOD: We compiled background data, Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale (HDSS), and Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) post hoc results from 2 previous studies. Cases who described only 1 site as their most problematic area of sweating were included (n = 160/188) while individuals with multifocal primary sites of hyperhidrosis were excluded (n = 28/188).

Prevalence and predictors of night sweats, day sweats, and hot flashes in older primary care patients: an OKPRN study.

PURPOSE: We wanted to estimate the prevalence of night sweats, day sweats, and hot flashes in older primary care patients and identify associated factors. METHODS: We undertook a cross-sectional study of patients older than 64 years recruited from the practices of 23 family physicians. Variables included sociodemographic information, health habits, chronic medical problems, symptoms, quality of life, and the degree to which patients were bothered by night sweats, daytime sweating, and hot flashes. RESULTS: Among the 795 patients, 10% reported being bothered by night sweats, 9% by day sweats,

Pigmented Syringomatous Carcinoma/Sweat Gland Carcinoma of the Vulva With Melanocytic Colonization: An Uncommon Presentation of a Rare Sweat Gland Neoplasm.

Primary vulvar carcinomas are rare and constitute a diverse group of neoplasms. These primary tumors are typically classified based on their presumed tissue of origin or histological characteristics. Among these, carcinomas of sweat gland origin are particularly significant. They closely resemble similar malignancies in nonvulvar skin, including various cutaneous adnexal-type cancers such as apocrine and eccrine adenocarcinomas. Syringomatous carcinoma of the vulva is a rare malignant sweat gland neoplasm known for its infiltrative growth and tendency for local recurrence. Typically, these mal

A cross-sectional study of sweat-induced dermatitis during a South Indian summer: a glimpse of sweat gland-mediated cutaneous inflammation.

BACKGROUND: The role of sweat gland in inflammation has not received sufficient attention. The thermal stress during the summer months in tropical areas provides an opportunity to study the morphological patterns of inflammation produced primarily by the sweat gland. AIM: To collect clinical data on sweat-induced dermatitis during the summer months. METHODS: A hospital-based descriptive cross-sectional study was done during the hot and humid summer months of April to June in a tertiary care institute in Puducherry. Patients clinically diagnosed with sweat-induced dermatitis (dermatitis prima

Determination of the maximum rate of eccrine sweat glands’ ion reabsorption using the galvanic skin conductance to local sweat rate relationship.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to develop and describe a simple method to evaluate the rate of ion reabsorption of eccrine sweat glands in human using the measurement of galvanic skin conductance (GSC) and local sweating rate (SR). This purpose was investigated by comparing the SR threshold for increasing GSC with following two criteria of sweat ion reabsorption in earlier studies such as (1) the SR threshold for increasing sweat ion was at approximately 0.2–0.5 mg/cm2/min and (2) exercise heat acclimation improved the sweat ion reabsorption ability and would increase the criter

Microfluidic valves for wearable sweat analysis: a review.

Wearable sweat analysis can extend health monitoring from clinics to daily life. However, sweat is produced slowly and at changing rates, which makes sweat handling difficult. During collection and transport, sweat may remain in the device, flow backward, mix with older sweat, or become contaminated. The liquid that reaches the sensor may therefore differ from freshly secreted sweat. Microfluidic valves can control when sweat moves, where it flows, and how it reaches the sensing region. This review compares five valve classes relevant to wearable sweat systems. They are capillary, Tesla, mecha

Sweat-prints of COVID-19: unique metabolite signatures.

AIM: The study of human sweat and its metabolite profile can reveal important metabolic processes. Metabolites produced during respiratory infections, such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), create unique odor signatures. This study aims to identify a distinct signature of SARS-CoV-2 infection through the analysis of sweat metabolites. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sweat samples were collected from the axillae of individuals during the Delta and Omicron pandemic waves. Samples represent symptomatic (ventilator; n = 49), asymptomatic (home quarantine; n = 46) patients, an

Sweat Production During Continuous and Interval Aerobic Exercise.

INTRODUCTION:Aerobic exercise within the habitable volume of small spacecraft needed for space exploration beyond low Earth orbit is expected to challenge the capacity of environmental control systems. Moisture control is a primary concern. Crewmembers will contribute moisture to the cabin environment in the form of sweat while exercising. The effects of continuous aerobic exercise for improving and maintaining aerobic capacity is well characterized. Likewise, evidence suggests that high intensity interval exercise for shorter durations is also effective in building and maintaining aerobic cap

TROP2 Expression in Sebaceous and Sweat Gland Carcinoma.

Sebaceous carcinoma and sweat gland carcinoma (malignant tumors with apocrine and eccrine differentiation) are rare malignant skin adnexal tumors that differentiate toward sebaceous gland and eccrine and apocrine glands, respectively. Owing to the rarity of these carcinomas, standard treatments for advanced disease have not been established. Because the prognosis of patients with systemic metastasis is poor, a new treatment for these diseases is eagerly desired. Trophoblast cell surface antigen 2 (TROP2) and sacituzumab govitecan, an antibody-drug conjugate of TROP2, have attracted attention i

Sensitive enzymatic determination of neurotransmitters in artificial sweat.

Dopamine (DA) and epinephrine (EN) are two phenolic molecules that are used in the human body and secreted in the brain actuating as neurotransmitters. As both molecules are highly important in the brain and the central nervous system, monitoring of their concentrations would enable better understanding of their importance and role in different physiological conditions. Copper efflux oxidase from Escherichia coli was shown in the past to have the ability of oxidizing polyphenolic compounds. As such, we have engineered this enzyme for its site-specific attachment to an electrode for the detecti
