Detecting cocaine use through sweat testing: multilevel modeling of sweat patch length-of-wear data.

Although urine analysis remains the standard for detection of drugs of abuse, sweat patches provide a convenient alternative that avoids some of the problems with drug testing such as violations of privacy in observed urination, possibility of disease transmission, and transport of noxious fluids. This study examined minimum length of wear necessary to detect recent or concurrent cocaine use in a convenience sample of active cocaine users and also differences in analyte concentrations with increasing longer-term wear. Twenty-seven subjects (22 active drug users and 5 comparison subjects who di

Sweat production and localisation of carbonic anhydrase in the equine sweat gland during exercise at two ambient temperatures.

The aim of this investigation was to study sweat production during exercise at 2 ambient temperatures (20 degrees C and 35 degrees C) and the concurrent localisation of carbonic anhydrase (CA) in the sweat gland. Horses develop alkalosis during prolonged exercise and the sweat contains HCO3-. Carbonic anhydrase is therefore of interest since it catalyses the reaction CO2 + H2O<-->HCO3- + H+. Four standardbred trotters performed an exercise test. Skin biopsies were taken from the neck, and sweat rate, blood and skin temperatures were measured. There was a close relationship between sweat rate,

S1 guideline sweat gland carcinoma.

The current classification of sweat gland carcinomas is based on histomorphological characteristics and distinguishes between more than 20 entities. Most patients are older, but some subtypes also affect middle-aged and younger patients. The majority of tumors arise de novo. Sweat gland carcinomas have nonspecific clinical features. The tumors are usually located in the head and neck area and on extremities, with the exception of extramammary Paget's carcinoma, which has an anogenital predilection. Sweat gland carcinomas occurring in the armpit may pose a histomorphological challenge in distin

Persistent Night Sweats: Diagnostic Evaluation.

Night sweats are a nonspecific symptom that patients commonly experience but rarely discuss with their physicians without prompting. Although many life-threatening causes such as malignancies or infections have been described, most patients who report persistent night sweats in the primary care setting do not have a serious underlying disorder. Conditions commonly associated with night sweats include menopause, mood disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease, hyperthyroidism, and obesity. If a clinical diagnosis is apparent based on the initial history and physical examination, specific treatm

Neural control of sweat secretion: a review.

BACKGROUND: Humans have 4 million exocrine sweat glands, which can be classified into two types: eccrine and apocrine glands. Sweat secretion, a constitutive feature, is directly involved in thermoregulation and metabolism, and is regulated by both the central nervous system (CNS) and autonomic nervous system (ANS). OBJECTIVES: To explore how sweat secretion is controlled by both the CNS and the ANS and the mechanisms behind the neural control of sweat secretion. METHODS: We conducted a literature search on PubMed for reports in English from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2016. RESULTS AND C

[Mucinous sweat gland carcinoma of the eyelid].

A 52-year-old patient presented with a painless nodular tumor of the upper left eyelid, which was first noticed 6 months prior to the initial presentation. The histopathological and immunohistochemical examination of the excised tumor revealed a mucinous sweat gland carcinoma. This very rare neoplasm (1/150,000 skin lesions) is located within the ocular adnexa in 40 % of cases. If completely excised the prognosis is usually good; however, due to the histological similarity to metastases of an adenocarcinoma, a hitherto unknown primary tumor at another site should be excluded.

Malignant sweat gland tumors: an update.

Sweat gland carcinomas represent an important and somewhat contentious group of tumors in diagnostic skin pathology. Although their overall incidence is rare, they show a wide range of histologic features, and reliable classification is often challenging. Awareness and recognition of these tumors is, however, important as they may be associated with significant morbidity and even disease-related mortality, especially if left untreated. According to their behavior, sweat gland carcinomas are traditionally separated into tumors with low-grade and high-grade malignant behavior. This article is ai

Primary cutaneous sweat gland carcinoma.

Primary cutaneous sweat gland carcinoma is a rare neoplasm of malignant sweat gland lesions. It is characterized clinically with non-symptomatic, slow-growing nodules. We report the case of a patient with cutaneous sweat gland carcinoma with local recurrence and metastasis to the lung that was treated with surgical resection therapy and chemotherapy. The initial neoplasm was excised but biopsy was not performed. The tumor then recurred 7 years later, was re-excised, biopsy was performed, and diagnosed as a low-grade hidradenocarcinoma. We presented a very good result of chemotherapy in the tre

Eccrine sweat response in children with asthma.

BACKGROUND: Even though there is a general conviction among parents of asthmatic children and pediatricians that asthmatic children sweat more than healthy ones, this has not been formally tested. AIM: To determine sweating response and factors affecting this response in children with asthma and compare these findings with healthy children. METHOD: Eighty-two children with asthma and 51 healthy controls aged 6-18 years were enrolled in the study. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) was measured on palmar, volar, forehead, and back surfaces before and after exercise and was expressed as the diff

Fever and sweats in the patient with advanced cancer.

Fever and sweats are common complications of cancer and its treatment. This article reviews potential causes and pathophysiologic mechanisms of fever and sweat. Management recommendations, consisting of primary interventions directed at contributing causes and pathophysiologic mechanisms, and non-specific palliative measures are discussed. Optimal management is contingent on the physician's integration of medical expertise with patient-derived goals of care.

Uric acid and urea in human sweat.

The present study investigated whether thermal sweating may relieve elevated concentrations of serum uric acid or urea. Concentrations of uric acid and urea were measured in the sweat of sixteen male volunteers, who were treated with external heat after one hour of intense physical exercise. The same analytes were also measured in their urine and serum samples. Furthermore, creatinine and some electrolytes were determined in these specimens. The results show that the concentration of uric acid in the sweat is 24.5 micromol/L, which is only 6.3% of that in serum. The concentration of urea in th

Genetic changes in sweat gland carcinomas.

The molecular pathogenesis of malignant appendageal tumors is poorly understood. Immunohistochemical staining, polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based loss of heterozygosity (LOH) and sequencing analyses were performed in a mixed group of 21 sweat gland carcinomas. LOH was mostly confined to the chromosome arm 17p. None of the remaining 17 tumors showed LOH at any loci. Nuclear accumulation of p53 protein was observed in 3 tumors, all of which also showed LOH of 17p. One eccrine gland adenocarcinoma showed allelic loss of 17p and a Cys 176 Arg mutation in the p53 gene. The other three tumors tha

Epidermoid cyst with sweat ducts on the torso.

We report a case of an epidermoid cyst arising on the upper chest that had a remarkable histologic pattern composed of structures resembling eccrine ducts in the horny layer and an acrosyringium. The expression of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was also demonstrated immunohistochemically within these ductal structures. Eccrine ducts have been reported recently, in epidermoid cysts located in the palmoplantar region. The cyst described here suggests that epidermoid cysts derived from eccrine ducts may also appear on the torso.

Demonstration of sweat allergy in cholinergic urticaria.

Twenty patients with cholinergic urticaria, 11 sex- and age-unmatched patients with acute or chronic urticaria and 20 sex- and age-matched non-atopic control subjects were skin tested with autologous sweat. All cholinergic urticaria patients showed positive immediate-type skin reactions at 2(0)-2(9) dilutions of sweat (geometric mean of maximal positive dilutions +/- S.D. was 2(4.6 +/- 2.6), while in acute and chronic urticaria only three patients showed positive reactions at low dilutions (two 2(0) and one 2(1)) and none of 20 controls showed positive reactions. Sweat gland abnormalities in lichenoid dermatosis.

Lichenoid dermatosis is a pattern description of a variety of cutaneous lesions which primarily affect the dermoepidermal junction. Involvement of skin appendages has been restricted to hair follicles in lichen planopilaris and discoid lupus erythematosus. Sweat gland involvement has not been described in the four common members of this group, namely, lichen planus, discoid lupus erythematosus, fixed drug eruptions and erythema multiforme, although structural abnormalities have been reported in graft-versus-host disease. In a detailed morphological study of 59 cases, including lichen planus (1

[Sweat gland pathology in neurodegenerative disorders].

Ultrastructural pathology on sweat gland epithelium was studied in various neurodegenerative disorders; neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis (NCL), Lafora disease, mucopolysaccharidosis, GM1 gangliosidosis, Nieman-Pick disease, Fabry disease, Krabbe disease and metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD). Every disease had its own characteristic inclusions in sweat gland epithelium. Curvilinear profiles and fingerprint patterns were seen in NCL, but there were no morphological differences among late infantile, early juvenile and juvenile types. On the other hand, the granular matrix was characteristic of the
