Iron metabolism in copper-deficient swine.

The way in which iron is handled by the duodenal mucosa, the reticuloendothelial system, the hepatic parenchymal cell, and the normoblast was investigated in copper-deficient swine.Copper-deficient swine failed to absorb dietary iron at the normal rate. Increased amounts of stainable iron were observed in fixed sections of duodenum from such animals. When (59)iron was administered orally, the mucosa of copper-deficient animals extracted iron from the duodenal lumen at the normal rate, but the subsequent transfer to plasma was impaired. When intramuscular iron supplements were given to copper-de

Subtle Genetic Shifts of African Swine Fever Virus Among Vietnamese Domestic Swine Following Live-Attenuated Vaccine Commercialization.

Since its first incursion in 2019, African swine fever (ASF) has remained a constant threat to the Vietnamese swine industry. The nationwide commercialization and implementation of live-attenuated vaccines (LAVs), alongside depopulation-repopulation efforts, necessitate a critical assessment of whether these strategies have driven inadvertent changes in circulating African swine fever virus (ASFV) strains. In this study, molecular surveillance of ASFV core genes was conducted in pigs from non-vaccinated farms across Central and Southern Vietnam, comparing strains before and after LAVs' introdu

Tissue tropisms opt for transmissible reassortants during avian and swine influenza A virus co-infection in swine.

Genetic reassortment between influenza A viruses (IAVs) facilitate emergence of pandemic strains, and swine are proposed as a "mixing vessel" for generating reassortants of avian and mammalian IAVs that could be of risk to mammals, including humans. However, how a transmissible reassortant emerges in swine are not well understood. Genomic analyses of 571 isolates recovered from nasal wash samples and respiratory tract tissues of a group of co-housed pigs (influenza-seronegative, avian H1N1 IAV-infected, and swine H3N2 IAV-infected pigs) identified 30 distinct genotypes of reassortants. Viruses

H1N1 influenza viruses varying widely in hemagglutinin stability transmit efficiently from swine to swine and to ferrets.

A pandemic-capable influenza virus requires a hemagglutinin (HA) surface glycoprotein that is immunologically unseen by most people and is capable of supporting replication and transmission in humans. HA stabilization has been linked to 2009 pH1N1 pandemic potential in humans and H5N1 airborne transmissibility in the ferret model. Swine have served as an intermediate host for zoonotic influenza viruses, yet the evolutionary pressure exerted by this host on HA stability was unknown. For over 70 contemporary swine H1 and H3 isolates, we measured HA activation pH to range from pH 5.1 to 5.9 for H

Early protection events in swine immunized with an experimental live attenuated classical swine fever marker vaccine, FlagT4G.

Prophylactic vaccination using live attenuated classical swine fever (CSF) vaccines has been a very effective method to control the disease in endemic regions and during outbreaks in previously disease-free areas. These vaccines confer effective protection against the disease at early times post-vaccination although the mechanisms mediating the protection are poorly characterized. Here we present the events occurring after the administration of our in-house developed live attenuated marker vaccine, FlagT4Gv. We previously reported that FlagT4Gv intramuscular (IM) administered conferred effecti

Molecular epidemiology study of swine influenza virus revealing a reassorted virus H1N1 in swine farms in Cuba.

In this report, we describe the emergence of reassorted H1N1 swine influenza virus, originated from a reassortment event between the H1N1 pandemic influenza virus (H1N1p/2009) and endemic swine influenza virus in Cuban swine population. In November 2010, a clinical respiratory outbreak was reported on a pig fattening farm in Cuba. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all the genes of one of the isolate obtained, with the exception of neuraminidase, belonged to the H1N1p/2009 cluster. This finding suggests that H1N1pdm has been established in swine and has become a reservoir of reassortment that m

Colonic Anastomotic Leak Model in Swine.

INTRODUCTION: Anastomotic leaks (ALs) are serious postoperative complications. Current experimental studies designed to investigate leaks are based on acute intraoperative dehiscence of the anastomosis. Clinically, however, AL usually happens later in the postoperative course. Presented here is a clinically relevant colonic AL model in swine. METHODS: Seventeen Yorkshire pigs were divided into 2 groups: the control group (n = 6) and the experimental group (n = 11). An enterotomy was performed on the descending colon and an end-to-end handsewn anastomosis was created in the groups. The proxima

Swine Norovirus: Past, Present, and Future.

Norovirus, an ssRNA + virus of the family Caliciviridae, is a leading disease burden in humans worldwide, causing an estimated 600 million cases of acute gastroenteritis every year. Since the discovery of norovirus in the faeces of swine in Japan in the 1990s, swine norovirus has been reported in several countries on several continents. The identification of the human-associated GII.4 genotype in swine has raised questions about this animal species as a reservoir of norovirus with zoonotic potential, even if species-specific P-types are usually detected in swine. This review summarises the ava

African Swine Fever Epidemiology and Control.

African swine fever is a devastating disease that can result in death in almost all infected pigs. The continuing spread of African swine fever from Africa to Europe and recently to the high-pig production countries of China and others in Southeast Asia threatens global pork production and food security. The African swine fever virus is an unusual complex DNA virus and is not related to other viruses. This has presented challenges for vaccine development, and currently none is available. The virus is extremely well adapted to replicate in its hosts in the sylvatic cycle in East and South Afric

New Artificial Insemination Technologies for Swine.

Better efficiency in swine artificial insemination (AI) is accomplished by reducing the necessary number of sperm cells and achieving high reproductive performance. Some strategies have been developed for use under field conditions, such as the site of sperm deposition (post-cervical AI), a single AI with control of oestrus and ovulation (fixed-time AI), and the better use of high genetic merit boars, to spread their genes as much as possible. To apply these technologies, it is important to understand some anatomical limits, physiological aspects and farm requirements. In this review, we point

Technical pearls for swine lung transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Since the advent of ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP), there has been increased focus on swine models of lung transplantation; however, the anatomic differences between human and swine lungs and the technical challenges in performing porcine lung transplantation are not well described in the surgical literature. METHODS: Surgically important anatomic variations are described, and the technical measures taken to address them during harvest and transplantation are introduced. RESULTS: There are three surgically important anatomic variations in pigs. First, the right cranial lobe bronch

Swine influenza (H1N1) and acute appendicitis.

BACKGROUND: During the swine influenza (H1N1) pandemic that began in 2009, many hospitalized adults had gastrointestinal symptoms. The most common symptoms associated with swine influenza (H1N1) were nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. In the experience of the authors, swine influenza was not complicated by abdominal pain. There are a wide variety of infectious and non-infectious disorders that may present with a pain in the right lower quadrant, mimicking appendicitis, ie, pseudoappendicitis. Influenza predisposes to some types of bacterial infection, eg, influenza pneumonia may be complicated by

[Emerging infectious diseases among swine workers].

In the last years emerging infections represent an important problem of public health and occupational medicine. Biological agents and their hosts exist in a precariously balanced and continuously evolving relationship, influenced by their environment. RNA viruses are responsible for most of the emerging diseases. Epidemics that recently affected the world of work are zoonoses, such as cases of SARS in healthcare staff Dutch poultry workers infected with the avian virus A/H7N7 in 2003, the current threat of avian flu A/H5N1 to poultry workers. Workers at risk include those who are in contact w

Sorption of tylosin onto swine manure.

Sorption of tylosin was conducted on manure solids (<2 mm) and colloidal materials (<1.2 microm) collected from open (OL) and covered (CL) anaerobic swine manure lagoons. The aqueous concentration of tylosin in the sorption studies bracket the levels expected in lagoons, between 1 mgl(-1) and 30 mgl(-1). Sorption isotherms were found to be slightly non-linear for 2 mm solids, with Freundlich distribution coefficients (K(f)) of 39.4 with n=1.32 for CL slurry and 99.5 with n=1.02 for OL. These values are comparable to those reported for loam soils, but higher than those reported for sandy or cla

Swine model of Haemophilus ducreyi infection.

Haemophilus ducreyi is a strict human pathogen that causes sexually transmitted genital ulcer disease. We infected domestic swine with H. ducreyi 35000, resulting in the development of cutaneous ulcers histologically resembling human chancroid lesions. Intraepidermal lesions progressed from pustules to ulcers containing polymorphonuclear leukocytes and were accompanied by a dermal inflammatory infiltrate containing T cells and macrophages. H. ducreyi was recovered from lesions up to 17 days after inoculation, and pigs did not develop immunity to reinfection with the challenge strain. Features
