Reconsidering resectable oncological conditions in pancreatic tail cancer: A multicenter retrospective study on prognostic factors in pancreatic tail cancer after resection (HOPS Pt-01).

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic tail cancer (Pt-PC) is generally considered resectable when metastasis is absent, but doubts persist in clinical practice due to the variability in local tumor extent. We conducted a multicenter retrospective study to comprehensively identify prognostic factors associated with Pt-PC after resection. METHODS: We enrolled 100 patients that underwent distal pancreatectomy. The optimal combination of factors influencing relapse-free survival (RFS) was determined using the maximum likelihood method (MLM) and corrected Akaike and Bayesian information criteria (AICc and BIC).

Tail Docking of Canine Puppies: Reassessment of the Tail's Role in Communication, the Acute Pain Caused by Docking and Interpretation of Behavioural Responses.

Laws, regulations and professional standards increasingly aim to ban or restrict non-therapeutic tail docking in canine puppies. These constraints have usually been justified by reference to loss of tail participation in communication between dogs, the acute pain presumed to be caused during docking itself, subsequent experiences of chronic pain and heightened pain sensitivity, and the occurrence of other complications. These areas are reconsidered here. First, a scientifically robust examination of the dynamic functional foundations, sensory components and key features of body language that a

Comparative Study of Transcriptome Profiles of Mouse Livers and Skins Infected by Fork-Tailed or Non-Fork-Tailed Schistosoma japonicum.

Schistosoma japonicum (S. japonicum) is a worldwide spread pathogen which penetrates host skin and then induces several diseases in infected host, such as fibrosis, formation of granulomas, hepatocirrhosis, and hepatomegaly. In present study, for the first time, transcriptomic profiles of mouse livers and skins infected by fork-tailed S. japonicum cercaria or non-fork-tailed S. japonicum cercaria were analyzed by using RNA-seq. The present findings demonstrated that transcriptomic landscapes of livers and skins infected by fork-tailed S. japonicum cercaria or non-fork-tailed S. japonicum cerca

Influence of conditioner and straw on the herbaceous plant-based phytoremediation copper tailings: a field trial at Liujiagou tailings pond, China.

A field trial was performed to carry out an enhanced phytoremediation technique for multi-metal contaminated copper tailings by Sudan grass (Sorghum Sudanese), ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), and Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), using conditioner (TH-LZ01) and straw combination into composite amendments as soil amendments, aimed to obtain the maximum of phytoremediation effect. The results showed that compared with untreated herbaceous plants, the application of conditioner and straw planted with herbaceous plants reduced the pH and conductivity and increased the organic matter and water conten

Mosasaur tail morphology reveals burst swimming performance and ecological diversity.

Reconstructing locomotor performance of extinct animals is fundamental to understanding paleoecology, yet the soft tissues that control movement rarely fossilize, leaving performance poorly constrained for extinct taxa1. Burst locomotion is a key determinant of predatory and escape success2,3 and is governed by well-established fluid dynamics and kinematic principles, meaning it can be modeled from skeletal morphology alone. Here, we apply a drag-based fast-start framework, which we term a "slam-start," to estimate lunge velocity in four mosasaurs, dominant seagoing predators of Late Cretaceou

Morphologically defined substages of tail morphogenesis in C. elegans males.

BACKGROUND: Sex-specific morphogenesis occurs in C. elegans in the vulva of the hermaphrodite and in the male tail during the last larval stage. Temporal progression of vulva morphogenesis has been described in fine detail. However, a similar precise description of male tail morphogenesis was lacking. RESULTS: We here describe morphogenesis of the male tail at time points matching vulva development with special focus on morphogenesis of the tail tip. Using fluorescent reporters, we follow changes in cell shapes, cell fusions, nuclear migration, modifications in the basement membrane and forma

Management of a pancreatic tail hydatid cyst: a case report.

The case report describes a 73-year-old woman, with a history of diabetes, who presented with left hypochondrium pain. Interrogation revealed a long-term history of living with Echinococcus granulosus endemic area, associated to close contact with sheep and dogs. Upon physical examination, a painless mass of the left hypochondrium, fixed to the deep plane. Abdominal ultrasonography (USG) showed a 9 cm encapsulated mass in contact with the tail of the pancreas. Further investigation was carried out by performing an abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showing: large cystic mass with a partia

Primary Pancreatic Lymphoma in the Tail: A Rare Anatomic Presentation.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a common type of cancer, whose most common site of extranodal involvement is the gastrointestinal tract. However, primary presentation in the pancreas remains uncommon. Among cases with pancreatic involvement, the disease is often found in the head and rarely in the tail. Here, we present a case of a 56-year-old male patient with acute epigastric pain, early satiety, and abdominal distention. CT imaging showed a mass of the pancreatic tail with surrounding lymphadenopathy, concerning lymphoma. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-guided FNA) diagno

SPINAL NEMATODIASIS IN A LINED FLAT-TAIL GECKO (UROPLATUS LINEATUS).

A 5-y-old female lined flat-tail gecko (Uroplatus lineatus) presented for acute onset of lethargy and paraplegia and was subsequently euthanized. Histologic examination of the spinal cord revealed a verminous myelitis comprising moderate, multifocal, necrotizing myelitis with intramedullary adult and larval nematodes. Molecular data and morphology indicate a cosmocercid nematode, most likely of the genus Raillietnema, a diverse taxon reported to parasitize reptiles, amphibians, and teleost fish. To the authors' knowledge this is the first report of spinal nematodiasis in a reptile species, and

Histological differences between lumbar and tail intervertebral discs in mice.

Both the lumbar and tail intervertebral discs (IVD) of mice serve as models for the pathogenesis and histologic progression of degenerative disc disease. Recent studies in mature mice, however, demonstrate that the mechanics and physical attributes of lumbar and tail IVD-endplate (EP)-interfaces are strikingly different. We hypothesized that these structural disparities are associated with differences in the composition and organization of soft tissue elements that influence the biomechanical properties of the spine. Lumbar and tail vertebral segments and discs were collected from the same C57

Studies on tail regeneration and homeotic transformation in anuran tadpoles.

Anuran tadpoles are excellent models for regeneration studies. The tail, an organ essential for swimming for the aquatic tadpole, regenerates completely following injury or amputation. However, treatment with the morphogen, vitamin A or retinoic acid inhibits normal tail regeneration and induces homeotic transformation of tail to limbs. This phenomenon was discovered for the first time in the Indian marbled balloon frog Uperodon systoma in the Developmental Biology laboratory of Utkal University (Odisha, India) in the year 1992. In this paper, we present the results of morphological, histologi

Substrate use drives the macroevolution of mammalian tail length diversity.

External length is one of the most conspicuous aspects of mammalian tail morphological diversity. Factors that influence the evolution of tail length diversity have been proposed for particular taxa, including habitat, diet, locomotion and climate. However, no study to date has investigated such factors at a large phylogenetic scale to elucidate what drives tail length evolution in and across mammalian lineages. We use phylogenetic comparative methods to test a priori hypotheses regarding proposed factors influencing tail length, explore possible interactions between factors using evolutionary

Association Between Tail-Biting and Intestinal Microbiota Composition in Pigs.

Tail-biting (TB) in pigs is a serious behavioral disorder. It is an important challenge in swine production as it impacts animal welfare and health and the economics and safety of the pork meat supply chain. To prevent TB, approaches including enrichment material and tail docking are proposed but none are optimal. Nutrition appears to be an important factor in TB behavior, perhaps by modulating the intestinal microbiota (IM). Our aim was to assess the association between TB behavior and IM in pigs through comparisons of IM in groups of biter, bitten and non-biter/non-bitten pigs. Each group co

The genetic architecture of morphological abnormalities of the sperm tail.

Spermatozoa contain highly specialized structural features reflecting unique functions required for fertilization. Among them, the flagellum is a sperm-specific organelle required to generate the motility, which is essential to reach the egg. The flagellum integrity is, therefore, critical for normal sperm function and flagellum defects consistently lead to male infertility due to reduced or absent sperm motility defined as asthenozoospermia. Multiple morphological abnormalities of the flagella (MMAF), also called short tails, is among the most severe forms of sperm flagellum defects responsib
