Lingual morphology of three urban molossid bats from South America: Filiform lingual papillae with somatosensory innervation.

Bats have evolved a wide variety of dietary strategies. These diverse diets have driven significant morphological specialization of their tongues. This study focuses on the external and histological morphology of lingual papillae in three South American insectivorous bat species belonging to the family Molossidae: Molossus fluminensis, Molossus molossus, and Eumops patagonicus. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), conventional histological techniques, and immunohistochemistry, we identified four types of lingual papillae: filiform, scale-like filiform, fungiform, and circumvallate. A dist

Healthy Human Laryngopharyngeal Sensory Innervation Density Correlates with Age.

OBJECTIVE: Somatosensory feedback from upper airway structures is essential for swallowing and airway defense but little is known about the identities and distributions of human upper airway neurons. Furthermore, whether sensory innervation modifies with aging is unknown. In this study, we quantify neuronal and chemosensory cell density in upper airway structures and correlate with age. METHODS: Participants underwent biopsies from base of tongue, lateral and midline pharyngeal wall, epiglottis, and arytenoids (N = 25 13 female/12 male; 20-80 years, mean 51.4 years without clinical diagnosis

The Bitter Taste Receptor (T2R) Gene Repertoire in the Porcine Circumvallate Papillae Consists of Fourteen Genes, Including Two Newly Validated T2R61 and T2R62.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Bitter taste perception is important for pig feeding behavior and survival. The type 2 taste receptors (T2Rs) are G protein-coupled receptors responsible for the sense of bitter taste perception in mammals. T2Rs are expressed in taste receptor cells located in the taste buds of the papillae of the tongue and in other tissues such as the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory epithelia, and immune system. In pigs, twelve T2R genes have previously been experimentally identified, although only a limited number of studies have investigated this gene family. We hypothesized that

Morphology of the tongue dorsal surface of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus).

This study aimed to analyze the morphology of the tongue, which varies among fish species and has not been studied in turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), using macro-anatomical, light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As research materials, the tongues of eight adult turbot, which were used for consumption, were examined. The roughly triangular-shaped tongue of the turbot consisted of three parts: apex, body, and root. The thickness of the tongue continued to increase from the apex to the root. Although papillae were not observed in the macroscopic examination of the tongue, microscopic exami

Familial dysautonomia (Riley-Day syndrome). Temporal bone findings and otolaryngological manifestations.

Familial dysautonomia, or Riley-Day syndrome, is inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion and occurs almost exclusively in Jewish families. This disorder is characterized by a smooth tongue devoid of fungiform papillae and of taste buds, and is clinically associated with poor taste discrimination. An unsteady gait and dizziness on change in position are also common presenting symptoms. This study reports the histopathological findings of eight temporal bones from four patients with documented familial dysautonomia. For the control series, 13 normal temporal bones were also studied. The most

A new species of rheophilic armored catfish of Rineloricaria (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the Vaupés River, Amazonas basin, Colombia.

A new rheophilic species of the genus Rineloricaria is described for the Amazon basin in Colombia. Rineloricaria cachivera n. sp. differs from its congeners by having anterior to the first predorsal plate, an inconspicuous saddle-like mark; the presence of dark, diffuse blotches, present as unified dark colouration along most of the dorsal portion of the head, without bands or spots on the head; a long snout that occupies more than half the head length (HL), between 58.0% and 66.3% HL; a naked portion on the cleithral area from the border of lower lip reaching the origin of pectoral fin; and b

Recessive white plumage color mutation of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) revealed morphological variations in the oropharyngeal roof structures, accompanied by behavioral differences.

Genetic background of experimental animals contributes mainly to the variations in the experimental outcomes. Therefore, quails of two lines of plumage color (brown and recessive white) were studied to investigate the impact of plumage color mutations on the morphological structures of the oropharyngeal roof and also on the ingestive behavior and quail performance. Feeding intake and feed conversion ratio were higher in the brown quails, associated with nonsignificant increase of the live body weight and body weight gain. In the recessive white quails, ingestive behaviors revealed significant

[Evaluating function and disorders of taste].

In a first anatomical section the peripheral gustatory pathways, their central connections, nuclei and cortical projections are discussed. It is evident, that the gustatory fibres from the posterior part of the tongue run in the IX nerve and those from the soft palate reach the medulla oblongata via the petrosal and facial nerve. For the anterior part of the tongue there obviously exists only one gustatory pathway via the chorda tympani-facial nerve. About the further central pathways of taste fibres is much less known. In a second part the methods of taste testing with different taste solutio

Physiological and Behavioral Responses to Optogenetic Stimulation of PKD2L1+ Type III Taste Cells.

Type III taste cells in mammalian taste buds are implicated in the detection and communication of sour and some salty stimuli, as well as carbonation and water. With this variety of proposed roles, it is unclear what information activated type III cells are communicating to the CNS. To better elucidate the role of type III cells in the taste bud, we use a type III cell-specific protein (polycystic kidney disease 2-like 1) to drive Cre-dependent expression of light-sensitive channelrhodopsin (Ai32) in mouse type III taste cells. Activation of these cells with light produces a taste nerve respon

Potential role of glucagon like peptide 1 in taste receptors.

The perception of taste is a complex physiological process that extends far beyond the simple detection of flavor molecules, serving as a critical interface between nutrient sensing, metabolic regulation, and feeding behavior. Emerging evidence reveals that this process is profoundly modulated by endocrine and neuromodulatory systems, creating a sophisticated gut-brain-taste axis that integrates peripheral gustatory signals with central homeostatic and hedonic mechanisms. Hormones such as glucagon-like peptide-1, leptin, ghrelin, and CCK not only regulate appetite and energy balance but also d

Expression and structural analysis of taste receptor genes in Iberian and Duroc pigs.

BACKGROUND: Taste receptor genes are expressed in sensory cells located in the tongue and influence food preferences, voluntary feed intake, and other relevant traits. Taste perception may differ between livestock breeds that show differences in eating behaviour and between animals that receive different diets or show phenotypic variation in feed intake or related-traits. The objectives of this work were to deepen the understanding of the regulation of the function of taste receptor genes in the circumvallate papillae of obese Iberian pigs in comparison to Duroc pigs, and to characterize their

[Advances in bitterness receptors T2Rs in different diseases].

Bitterness, as one of the most important physiological sensations in animals, is primarily recognized through the mediation of bitter taste receptors. In recent years, it has been found that these receptors are not only expressed in taste bud cells on the tongue but also in the respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, reproductive, and nervous systems. They are involved in regulating various fundamental physiological processes and are now considered important targets for the treatment of various diseases. This paper reviewed the structure, classification, distribution, and signaling pathways of

Olfactory and gustatory chemical sensor systems in the African turquoise killifish: Insights from morphology.

Smell and taste are extensively studied in fish species as essential for finding food and selecting mates while avoiding toxic substances and predators. Depending on the evolutionary position and adaptation, a discrete variation in the morphology of these sense organs has been reported in numerous teleost species. Here, for the first time, we approach the phenotypic characterization of the olfactory epithelium and taste buds in the African turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri), a model organism known for its short lifespan and use in ageing research. Our observations indicate that the o

Structural and functional specializations of the tongue in the desert-dwelling Arabian jerboa (Jaculus loftusi): Anatomical, histological, and histochemical study.

The current study aimed to characterize the structural, histological, and histochemical features of the Arabian jerboa's tongue, correlating it with the feeding habit and environmental pressure. Macroscopically, the tongue was elongated and categorized into apex, body, and root. It lacked the median sulcus, while the lingual body possessed a prominent torus linguae. The tongue dorsum carried five main types of papillae, categorized into mechanical and gustatory forms. The filiform papillae were the most prevalent type, situated at the lingual apex. The fungiform papillae were distributed rando

Lingual adaptations of the Tarentola annularis with new insights into its papillary system adaptations: Ultrastructure, histochemistry, and immunohistochemical observations.

Our research aims to conduct a comprehensive ultrastructural, histochemical, and immunohistochemical examination of Tarentola annularis' tongue, utilizing various techniques such as light, scanning electron microscopy, and morphometric analysis. The complex papillary system consisted of four conical subtypes and one filiform type. The apex carried three conical subtypes (elongated, quadrilateral, and round); the midtongue carried two papillary types (quadrilateral conical and rectangular pointed filiform); and the hindtongue carried two conical subtypes (quadrilateral and elongated serrated).

Electrophysiological characterization of responses from gustatory receptor neurons of sensilla chaetica in the moth Heliothis virescens.

Discrimination of edible and noxious food is crucial for survival in all organisms. We have studied the physiology of the gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) in contact chemosensilla (insect gustatory organs) located on the antennae of the moth Heliothis virescens, emphasizing putative phagostimulants and deterrents. Sucrose and the 2 bitter substances quinine and sinigrin elicited responses in a larger proportion of GRNs than inositol, KCl, NaCl, and ethanol, and the firing thresholds were lowest for sucrose and quinine. Variations in GRN composition in individual sensilla occurred without any
