Superficial temporal artery (STA) aneurysms are painless, pulsatile masses that infrequently result from blunt trauma to the side of the head. Only a small number of them have been reported in the literature. We describe the diagnosis and management of a 22-year-old man who had fallen from his bicycle, resulting in an STA pseudoaneurysm, and review the pertinent literature.

BACKGROUND: Intraoral defects after tumor resection are often reconstructed with free tissue transfer. However, in patients who are not good candidates for free tissue transfer, regional flaps based on the superficial temporal artery can be utilized. The authors present our technique to reconstruct intraoral defects with the superficial temporal artery perforator (STAP) flap and early outcomes.
METHODS: Five patients underwent STAP flaps for defects including the hard palate, buccal sulcus, floor of mouth, and retromolar trigone between 2017 and 2019. The mean defect size was 5.6 × 3.4 cm2 (3

BACKGROUND: The middle temporal artery (MTA) is the proximal medial branch of the superficial temporal artery (STA), supplying the temporalis muscle along with deep temporal arteries. Its use in vascularized flaps for reconstructive and otologic procedures has been described, yet its potential use in neurosurgery has not been studied. We report a novel technique for exposing the MTA and evaluated its characteristics for extracranial-intracranial cerebrovascular bypass.
METHODS: After a curvilinear frontotemporal incision in 10 cadaveric specimens, the STA was dissected from distal to proximal

BACKGROUND: Emergency bedside point-of-care ultrasound provides an extremely fast and cost-effective diagnostic modality for the diagnosis of vascular abnormalities, such as pseudoaneurysms. The cost-benefit and timing advantages of ultrasound are increasingly apparent when compared to more conventional diagnostic tests, such as computed tomography angiography and magnetic resonance angiography scans.
CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old man with no medical history presented to our emergency department complaining of a constant, throbbing, left-sided headache over his temple with an associated mass. Th

OBJECTIVES: Despite the increasing reports of traumatic and iatrogenic arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) of the superficial temporal artery (STA), the spontaneous origination of fistulas is extremely rare, and very little is known about their natural development. Spontaneous AVFs of the STA have the characteristic findings of an expanding, painless pulsatile mass and a palpable thrill with or without a vascular murmur.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This article describes five patients with AVFs of the STA with no history of a head injury. Four of them were treated successfully either by surgical resectio

INTRODUCTION: Pseudoaneurysm of the superficial temporal artery (STA) is usually caused by head or facial injury and is rarely reported in children. It is frequently discovered as a pulsatile cystic mass in the temple, and its diagnosis can be made with ultrasound or computerized tomography angiogram (CTA). Treatment modalities consist of surgical excision and endovascular embolization.
CASE REPORT: A 14-year-old boy presented with a pulsatile, cystic, and painless mass in the left anterior temporal region, developed 6 weeks after head injury from a traffic accident. The mass was 15 mm in dia

We report on two patients with von Willebrand disease (vWD) that presented with superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysms following minor blunt trauma. We discuss the possible pathophysiological link between vWD and blood vessel abnormalities. The cases highlight the importance of considering the diagnosis of vWD in patients presenting with pseudoaneurysm.

We present three patients who experienced late, severe bleeding from the superficial temporal artery (STA) following uncomplicated removal of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) from the temple. This is a common site for BCC and the risk of damage to the temporal branch of the facial nerve and the STA are well known. However, delayed bleeding as described in these individuals is potentially dangerous but poorly reported.

BACKGROUND: With proper training, superficial temporal artery biopsy is a safe office procedure with few complications. Surgeons from different disciplines, including ophthalmologists, dermatologists, general surgeons, and plastic surgeons may be called upon to perform this common procedure to confirm giant cell arteritis.
OBJECTIVE: To emphasize the surgical anatomy of the scalp as it pertains to superficial temporal artery biopsy and to raise awareness that significant complications can occur after superficial temporal artery biopsy.
METHOD: Case report.
RESULTS: A 75-year-old woman with

A 48-year-old male without marked blood coagulation disorder developed a pseudoaneurysm of the superficial temporal artery (STA) following craniotomy. Cerebral angiography revealed a pseudoaneurysm on the parietal branch of the STA. Total extirpation was performed, and the postoperative course was uneventful. Most pseudoaneurysms of the STA develop after trauma. Lesions rarely develop after craniotomy. However, pseudoaneurysm of the STA should be considered as a possible surgical complication.

INTRODUCTION: Temporal artery (TA) biopsy is required for the evaluation of several clinical scenarios because of the therapeutic implications of a positive result. We describe the experience of our department, which is the center for this technique in our hospital.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was made of all TA biopsies performed in the Department of Otolaryngology, Hospital Sierrallana, from January 1995 to April 1997.
RESULTS: Thirty-four biopsies of the TA artery were performed in 33 patients for possible temporal arteritis. Mean age was 76 years (range: 61-87 years). Twe

Oculo-oscillodynamography (OODG) after Ulrich was performed on 21 patients suffering from unilateral hemodynamically relevant carotid stenosis. In ten patients the perfusion pressure was low on the affected side. In the other eleven patients there was no difference between the two sides and these patients were thought to have well-developed collateral anastomoses. In nine patients with temporal arteriitis low perfusion pressure was found by OODG on the side with the lower visual acuity. After systemic therapy with corticosteroids the perfusion pressure normalized on both sides.

A 79-year-old man with diplopia and weakness was found to have necrotizing vasculitis consistent with polyarteritis nodosa on temporal artery biopsy. Although he had no evidence of visceral involvement from vasculitis, he responded well to corticosteroid therapy. This case illustrates a nosological problem that can occur when dealing with a disease that has diverse clinical manifestations and nonspecific laboratory findings. Moreover, this case demonstrates the value of including a branch artery segment when biopsying the temporal artery.

A case of multiple superficial temporal artery (STA) pseudoaneurysms following craniotomy is reported and a review of the literature is made. The patient was a 17-year-old male who was hospitalized as he developed right hemiparesis 4 hours after golf ball injury to the left temporal region. He had been diagnosed as hemophilia A one year prior to the injury. CT scan showed right parietal intracranial hematoma with mass effect when he was submitted to emergency craniotomy. At surgery a linear scalp incision was made over the left temporal area after high factor VIII concentrates (con-VIII), 2,00

A 41-year-old Libyan woman with Moyamoya disease and persisting post-stroke neurological deficits was treated by a superficial temporal-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) anastomosis. The postoperative angiograms revealed that the STA was rapidly irrigating the territory of the middle cerebral artery including those regions that had been filled preoperatively via different networks of collaterals. Furthermore prompt venous drainage was seen to occur postoperatively. Following surgery EEG analyses revealed considerable increase in the electrical brain activity, and neurological examinations showe

OBJECTIVES: Cluster headache is a primary headache disorder, which has affected up to 0.1% population. Superficial temporal artery ligation combined with auriculotemporal nerve transection (SLAT) is one of the surgical alternatives to treat the drug-resistant temporal cluster headache (TCH). The current work aimed to assess the effect of SLAT on TCH patients based on the very long-term clinical follow-up.
METHODS: The current retrospective study had enrolled 20 adolescent TCH patients undergoing SLAT between December 2016 and January 2018. The headache diaries as well as the pain severity que

The preferred method for treating complex dural arteriovenous fistulae of the transverse and sigmoid sinuses is via endovascular, transarterial embolization using liquid embolysate. However, this treatment approach mandates access to distal dural feeding arteries that can be technically challenging by standard endovascular approaches. This video describes a left temporal craniotomy for direct stick microcatheterization of an endovascularly inaccessible distal posterior division of the middle meningeal artery for embolization of a complex left temporal dural arteriovenous fistula. The case was
