An encephalomyosynangiosis (EMS) is a temporal muscle graft that is placed onto the surface of the brain to serve as a source for collateral vessel growth for brain revascularization in patients with Moyamoya Disease (MMD). To facilitate an EMS in patients with occlusive cerebrovascular diseases other than MMD, the transfer of pro-angiogenic genes via transplantation of retrovirally transduced myoblasts into the temporal muscle may represent an innovative approach to augment collateralization. Thus, we tested whether retrovirally transfected myoblasts can spontaneously fuse with the non-ischem

Temporal myositis is a rare inflammatory disease of the temporal muscle. We report a case of unilateral temporal myositis, in which a polymyositis was diagnosed two years thereafter. Although focal myositis may rarely herald polymyositis, isolated temporal myositis preceding inflammatory myopathies has not been described, to our knowledge. In the setting of a temporal pain and swelling, ultrasonography may help in diagnosis, biopsy guidance, disease extension, and progression assessment. Further studies are necessary to establish the role of elastography in differentiating between muscle infla

Understanding jaw muscle activity changes in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is crucial to guide clinical management. The nature of these changes is currently unclear. Explore changes in jaw muscle activity in TMD. Electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane) and bibliographies were searched from inception to 9 July 2020 for eligible studies, including grey literature. Case-control and interventional studies reporting time-domain and frequency-domain electromyographic measures of jaw muscle activity in TMD and control groups were included. SIGN checklist fo

OBJECTIVES: Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) causes degenerative changes in TMJ tissues. The inter-tissue crosstalk that exacerbates illness and organic changes in bone secondary to TMJ-OA potentially affects the muscles; therefore, patients with a muscular disease might also suffer from bone disease. However, knowledge gaps exist concerning muscle pathology at the onset of TMJ-OA. In this study, we documented the pathogeneses of the bone and muscle at the onset of TMJ-OA using a mouse model.
METHODS: We performed a partial resection of the TMJ disk to establish a mouse model o

We present reproducibility data on a quantitative electromyographic investigation of the temporal and frontal muscles using surface electrodes. Such data have not been published before. They constitute a necessary basis for future evaluation of the importance of pericranial muscles in tension-type headache. Root mean squares and mean rectified values of the electrical activity were measured in 20 healthy subjects. Power spectra were calculated and the mean and median frequencies were extracted. The coefficient of intraindividual variation in RMS from the right temporal muscle within the same e

AIMS: To test the hypothesis that, in comparison with control, experimental noxious stimulation of the right masseter muscle would result in significant changes in the firing rates, thresholds, and recruitment orders of single-motor units (SMUs) of the nonpainful, synergistic right anterior temporalis muscle during goal-directed isometric biting task performance.
METHODS: Twenty healthy volunteers received an infusion of hypertonic saline (HS; 5% sodium chloride) into the right masseter to produce pain intensity of 40 to 60 on a 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS). Isotonic saline (IS) infusion

AIMS: To test the hypothesis that experimental noxious stimulation of the right masseter muscle results in a reorganization of motor unit activity within the right temporalis and right masseter muscles during jaw closing tasks.
METHODS: A total of 20 healthy participants received hypertonic saline (5% sodium chloride) infusion into the right masseter muscle, and pain intensity was maintained at 40-60/100 mm on a visual analog scale. Standardized isometric biting tasks were performed with an intraoral force transducer while single motor units (SMUs) were recorded from the right masseter and te

The masseter muscle is innervated by branches of 3 nerves. The zygomaticomandibular muscle must be regarded as part of the masseter as it is supplied by 2 branches of the massetericus nerve. Two branches of the medial pterygoid nerve enter the medial pterygoid muscle medially. The lateral pterygoid muscle is supplied by the lateral pterygoid nerve, which enters the muscle dorsally perpendicular to the muscle fibres. Five branches of the profound temporal nerves enter the temporal muscle from the ventral and medial sides. The branches of all nerves proceed parallel to each other in the dorsal d

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the individual and combined effects of obesity and muscle mass on brain volume in a community-dwelling healthy older population.
METHODS: One thousand two hundred nine participants (M:F = 574:635, mean age 63.6 ± 6.9 years) were included. The cross-sectional area of visceral fat (VF), the height-adjusted appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM/height2), and the ratio of thigh muscle to visceral fat (TM/VF) represented obesity, muscle mass, and their integrated value, respectively. Linear regression analysis was performed to establish associations between 215 brain compar

A rare case with coexistent congenital scalp AVM in the temporoparietal muscle and a saccular aneurysm of the main feeder is presented. A 47-year-old female was admitted with the complaint of a right gradually expanding and painful pre-auricular mass. Physical examination showed a round, tender and compressible tumor measuring 3 x 3 cm in the right pre-auricular region, and there was bruit on the mass. Pre- and Post-contrast CT scans showed a slightly enhanced extracranial mass in the right temporal subcutaneous region. MR imaging showed a flow void mass both on T1 and T2 weighted images. Sele

Musician's dystonia (MD) is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions specifically triggered by playing an instrument. This condition often leads to a loss of fine motor control, threatening the careers of affected musicians. While MD is commonly associated with the hands, it can also affect the lower limbs, particularly in drummers. Understanding the muscle coordination involved in MD is crucial for comprehending its neurological mechanisms, yet the muscle coordination of lower-limb dystonia has not been thoroughly explored. This study aimed to investigate the diffe

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Temporomandibular joint dysfunctions (TMDs) are complex problems affecting the temporomandibular joints (TMJs), masticatory muscles, or both. TMDs are considered muscle pain caused by contraction and ischemia in the masticatory muscles, but evaluation of the efficacy of pharmacological treatment is lacking.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the changes in masticatory muscles, joint space, and main arteries supplying the TMJs after pharmacological therapy in patients with TMDs using ultrasonography (USG).

The treatment of a complex temporomandibular disorder (TMD), such as disk displacement with reduction (DDR) associated with arthralgia and myalgia, may depends on understanding the impairments in muscle function. The aim of this study was to investigate the behavior of the anterior temporalis, masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles in the time and frequency domains during chewing in patients with chronic painful TMD-DDR using electromyographic (EMG) analysis. Thirty-three patients who met the diagnostic criteria for TMD and 32 volunteers without TMD (control group) underwent clinical examina

PURPOSE: To assess the effect of ageing on in vivo human ciliary muscle morphology and contractility during accommodation.
METHODS: Seventy-nine subjects, aged 19-70 years were recruited. High-resolution images were acquired of nasal and temporal ciliary muscle in the relaxed state, and at stimulus vergence levels of -4 and -8 D, using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). Objective refractions and axial lengths were also recorded. Linear regression analysis was performed to determine the effect of age on nasal and temporal ciliary muscle morphologic characteristics.
