Tibetan Medicine Triphala (THL), consisting of Emblica officinalis, Terminalia bellerica, and Terminalia chebula, is a traditional Tibetan remedy for diabetes mellitus (DM). This study investigated THL's pancreatic metabolomic effects and impacts on paracrine factors (glucagon, insulin, somatostatin, pancreatic polypeptide) in diabetic rats. Rats were divided into six groups, gavaged for 8 weeks, with weekly blood glucose/body weight monitoring. THL reduced serum glucagon, somatostatin, pancreatic polypeptide, elevated insulin, restored pancreatic β-cell function, downregulated α/δ/pp cell exp

Structural characterization of natural products in complex herbal extracts remains a major challenge in phytochemical analysis. In this study, we present a novel post-acquisition data-processing strategy-key ion diagnostics-neutral loss filtering (KID-NLF)-combined with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q/TOF-MS) for systematic profiling of the medicinal plant Terminalia chebula. The strategy consists of four main steps. First, untargeted data are acquired in negative electrospray ionization (ESI-) mode. Second, a genus-specific diag

Ethanolic extracts and some fractions from 10 Indian medicinal plants, known for antibacterial activity, were investigated for their ability to inhibit clinical isolates of beta-lactamase producing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA). Synergistic interaction of plant extracts with certain antibiotics was also evaluated. The MRSA test strains were found to be multi-drug resistant and also exhibited high level of resistance to common beta-lactam antibiotics. These strains produced beta-lactamases, which hydrolyze one or other beta-lactam

"Triphala", the Ayurvedic wonder is used traditionally for the treatment of different types of diseases since antiquity. The hydroalcoholic extracts of the three components of Triphala powder demonstrated varying degrees of strain specific antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant uropathogenic bacteria. Terminalia chebula fruit extract was active against all the test isolates followed by Terminalia belerica and Emblica officinalis. There was a close association between antibacterial activity and total phenolic content of Triphala components. The test plant extracts were also found to

The description of Acnemia sibirica was published by G.P. Ostroverkhova in her 1979 monograph. The species, however, was mistakenly given as it had been described in 1978. Moreover, it was not explicitly indicated as a new species (except in the legend for the figure of male terminalia), and type specimens were not designated. Evidently, due to confusion with the original description, the species was not mentioned in the recent literature and was not included in the online taxonomic databases. Anyway, the name complies with the availability criteria according to the International Code of Zoolo

INTRODUCTION: A duplicated filum terminale appears to be a rare finding in the absence of a split cord malformation. Herein, we discuss this finding and its potential dysembryology.
CASE REPORTS: We report two cases of duplicated filum terminale without split cord malformation. The first case presented as an incidental finding with thickened filum terminale. At time of surgery, a thickened filum was resected and a smaller size filum was transected and both were confirmed with pathologic examination. The second case presented with a lumbar skin hemangioma. Screening MRI showed a duplicated fil

As part of a validation program of antimalarial traditional recipes, an ethnotherapeutic approach was applied in Dionfo, a meso-endemic Guinean rural area where conventional health facilities are insufficient. A prevalence investigation indicated a malarial burden of 4.26%. Ethnomedical and ethnobotanical surveys led to a collection of 63 plant species used against malaria from which Terminalia albida (Combretaceae) was one of the most cited. Ethnotherapeutic evaluation of a remedy based on T. albida was applied to 9 voluntary patients suffering from uncomplicated malaria. Treatment of 7 to 14

HP-1 a herbal formulation comprising of Phyllanthus niruri and extracts of Terminalia belerica, Terminalia chebula, Phyllanthus emblica and Tinospora cordifolia has been evaluated for hepatoprotective activity against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced toxicity. Results show that HP-1 reversed the leakage of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) and prevented the depletion of glutathione (GSH) levels in a primary monolayer culture of rat hepatocytes (in vitro). HP-1 attenuated the serum toxicity as manifested in elevated levels of transaminases (glutamate oxalo

Background: Chebulinic acid (CA), a component in Terminalia chebula, exhibits antiulcer activity, but has poor aqueous solubility. Raft-forming systems incorporating solid dispersions (SDs) of CA, were developed to overcome its poor biopharmaceutical properties and to prolong the gastric residence time for maximum activity. Methods: SDs were formulated by a solvent evaporation method using Eudragit EPO. Raft formulations consisted of sodium alginate as a polymer. Results: Release of CA in the dissolution medium was 40%, whereas SDs showed 95.45% release. The CA raft system (20 mg/kg) showed cu

Plant polyphenols, natural antioxidants, form complexes with iron minerals that enhance contaminant degradation via reductive processes. This study investigated the degradation of carbon tetrachloride (CT) using polyphenol-iron complexes synthesized from tree leaf extracts. Polyphenols were extracted from waste tree leaves, including Ficus microcarpa, Terminalia neotaliala, Haematoxylon campechianum, Ficus septica, Mangifera indica, and Ficus religiosa, with gallic acid identified as the predominant constituent. Among them, Terminalia neotaliala exhibited superior antioxidant capacity, reducin

Malaria remains a major public health problem due to the emergence and spread of Plasmodium falciparum drug resistance. There is an urgent need to investigate new sources of antimalarial drugs which are more effective against Plasmodium falciparum. One of the potential sources of antimalarial drugs is traditional medicinal plants. In this work, we studied the in vitro antiplasmodial activity of chloromethylenic, methanolic, and MeOH/H2O (1/1) crude extracts and decoction obtained from eight medicinal plants collected in Burkina Faso and of total alkaloids for five plants. Extracts were evaluat

Most Ayurvedic drugs are polyherbal formulations. Amongst Triphala, a widely utilised Ayurvedic formulation, is available globally as a health promoting agent. It consists of more than 150 bioactive compounds that work synergistically and restore the physiological balance. The term Triphala implies the meaning of three fruits, that is, Tri-three, Phala-fruit. The outer pericarp of the fruits of Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Vibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) is grouped as Triphala. It is indicated in the treatment of a wide disease spectrum, like pyrexia, inte

Water, methanol and dichloromethane extracts prepared from various parts of 40 medicinal plant species from Mali were investigated for their trypanocidal activity against Trypanosoma brucei brucei. Of a total of 165 extracts tested in vitro in the Low Inoculation Long Incubation Test (LILIT), 24 extracts showed a high trypanocidal activity. Using the Long-Term Viability Assay (LtVA) for corroboration of the results of the 24 extracts, it was found that 15 samples had minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values > 10 microg/ml, eight MIC values of 100 microg/ml and one MIC values of 50-100 mic
