A Rare Case of Choroid Plexus Papilloma of the Third Ventricle in an Adult.

Colloid cysts are the commonest masses of the third ventricle. Third ventricle neoplasms are uncommon. They include tumors arising from the choroid plexus (papillomas, carcinomas), tumors arising from other than the choroid plexus (ependymomas, meningiomas), metastases, and lymphoma. Choroid plexus tumors usually occur in the lateral ventricle in children and fourth ventricle in adults, and often present with hydrocephalus. We herein describe the extremely rare occurrence of third ventricle choroid plexus papilloma in a 35-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with a long hist

Colloid Cyst of the Third Ventricle: Case report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts account for approximately 1% of all intracranial tumors and are the most common type of the neuroepithelial cysts. They are benign, that most commonly occur in the third ventricle near the Monro foramen. Sometimes they have no specific sings and symptoms and may be confused and misdiagnosed with other pathology of nervous systems, but sometimes they may produce acute hydrocephalus, brain herniation, and lead to death. OBJECTIVE: We present a case of 40 years old male patient with brain colloid cyst. DISCUSSION: The patient was admitted at Clinic of Radiology, for he

Introduction to Microsurgery of the Third Ventricle, Pineal Region, and Tentorial Incisura.

This edition of the Video Supplement entitled "Microsurgery of the Third Ventricle, Pineal Region, and Tentorial Incisura" highlights approaches to accessing the third ventricle for surgical resection of a variety of pathologies. The third ventricle has critical neurovascular anatomy that must always be respected to prevent patient harm. Visualization of critical anatomy in three dimensions from a surgeon' line of sight is important when planning the optimum surgical approach. Some of the keys to safely operating in this region include thoughtful head positioning, limitation of brain retractio

The endoscopic endonasal approach for the management of craniopharyngiomas involving the third ventricle.

The third ventricle has historically represented one of the most challenging areas to access surgically, so that lesions directly harboring into the ventricular chamber or secondarily extending into it from adjacent areas have been approached by means of different transcranial routes. The aim of this work is to report our experience with the endoscopic endonasal approach in the management of a series of patients affected by craniopharyngiomas, extending into or arising from the third ventricle, evaluating pros and cons of this technique, also in regards of the anatomy and the pathology dealt w

Depression as an evolutionary adaptation: anatomical organisation around the third ventricle.

Currently available antidepressant treatments are no longer seen as the panaceas they once were. Only a proportion of the depressed population respond to them, they have a high relapse rate and a therapeutic lag of several weeks. The notable lack of progress in developing more efficacious drug-based antidepressant therapies over the past half century is a clear signal for the need to adopt new approaches. The current manuscript outlines the proposal that depression is an evolutionary adaptation that emerged where displaced dominants needed to make a transition to lower social status and that i

Endoscopic removal of a central neurocytoma from the posterior third ventricle.

Central neurocytoma is a rare benign tumor that most commonly arises within the ventricular system of young adults. Its occurrence in the posterior third ventricle is one of the least reported presentations. These tumors are usually treated by a combination of either biopsy or open surgical resection, often followed by radiation (Gamma knife or Novalis) with or without chemotherapy. A 37-year-old woman with a posterior third ventricle neurocytoma presented with acute signs of aqueductal stenosis. The patient underwent endoscopic assisted gross total resection of the tumor with the aid of intra

Transcranial sonography of the third ventricle and cognitive dysfunction in HIV patients.

BACKGROUND: Although the incidence and prevalence of dementia associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has decreased since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy, cognitive dysfunction remains one of the most prevalent factors severely affecting quality of life in patients with HIV. Previous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies showed a correlation between brain atrophy, enlargement of the ventricles and cognitive impairment in HIV patients. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the usefulness of transcranial sonographic (TCS) measurement of the third ventricle i

Influence of neuroendoscopic third ventriculostomy on the size of ventricles in chronic hydrocephalus.

Our intention was to compare the clinical outcome after surgical treatment of chronic hydrocephalus between patients who were subjected to neuroendoscopic third ventriculostomy and patients who underwent shunt implantation. At the Department of Neurosurgery of the Research Institute of Polish Mothers' Memorial Hospital from 1999 to 2001, 29 children, of an average age of 7 years (+/-7.1 years SD), underwent successful neuroendoscopic procedures, and from 1992 to 1994, 59 children, of an average age of 2 months (+/-1.9 months SD), underwent shunt implantation. The size of the ventricular system

Colloid cyst of the third ventricle: a clinical review of 39 cases.

This paper is a retrospective review of all patients treated for a colloid cyst of the third ventricle at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital over an 18-year consecutive period. Our experience is fairly typical compared with other published series. Colloid cys ts made up 1.6% of tumours treated by the neurosurgical unit. Patients presented with non-specific neurological symptoms and signs, commonly suggestive of raised intracranial pressure. Microsurgical excision was carried out via the transcallosal route in 34 cases and the transfrontal approach in four cases. There was no apparent difference in r

Endoscopic management of cysticercal cysts within the lateral and third ventricles.

In this report the authors review their 3-year experience with the endoscopic management of patients with hydrocephalus who harbored cysticercal cysts within the third and lateral ventricles. The management plan was to utilize an endoscopic approach to remove the cysts and to incorporate techniques useful in treating obstructive hydrocephalus. The ultimate goals were to avoid having to place a complication-prone cerebrospinal fluid shunt and to eliminate the risk of complications related to cyst degeneration. A retrospective analysis of 10 endoscopically managed patients with hydrocephalus and

Chordoid glioma of the third ventricle: confirmatory report of a new entity.

The term "chordoid glioma" was recently introduced to denote a circumscribed, apparently low-grade neoplasm arising in or preferentially involving the third ventricle of middle-aged women. We report biopsy and postmortem findings in a 60-year-old woman with symptoms of forgetfulness, headache, and lethargy. Neuroimaging showed a contrast-enhancing third ventricular mass with obstructive hydrocephalus. The tumor was subtotally resected. Microscopically, it consisted of clusters and strands of epithelioid cells in a mucoid matrix. Its margins were remarkably discrete and showed little tendency t

The transcallosal interforniceal approach to the third ventricle: anatomic and microsurgical aspects.

OBJECTIVE: The ability to visualize median-sagittal brain structures by magnetic resonance imaging improves planning for surgery to treat lesions of the third ventricle. The most appropriate path to the third ventricle is the transcallosal approach. The present study was undertaken to describe the surgical anatomy and landmarks encountered during this approach. METHODS: The transcallosal-interforniceal approach was undertaken in 30 formalin-fixed brains using an operating microscope. The surface landmarks for the approach pathway were the two points, P5 and P7, located 5 and 7 cm anterior to

[Two cases of colloid cysts of the third ventricle with nasal rhinorrhea].

The authors present 2 cases of tumours of third ventricle with intracranial hypertension and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea. The cause of the CSF rhinorrhea most often was thinning of lamina ethmoidalis and dura mater and rarely intussusception of arachnoidea into the intrasellar space in patients with oval orifice for the stalk of pituitary body due to prolonged intracranial hypertension. Efficacious treatment of CSF rhinorrhea comprises not only removing of the tumor but also introducing the valve and in some cases tightening of the base of the anterior and middle fossa.

Meningioma of the third ventricle. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Meningiomas of the third ventricle are rare intracranial neoplasms. We reported such a case in a 42 years old man without clinical evidence of increased intracranial pressure. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated the tumour sitting in the superior and anterior part of the third ventricle, bulging into the lateral ventricles. CT was more effective than MRI in the demonstration of calcifications whereas MRI proved to be superior in delineation of the tumour and its relation with surrounding structures.

The anterior wall of the third cerebral ventricle and homeostatic responses to dehydration.

Within the anterior wall of the third cerebral ventricle, structures are found which have been implicated in the regulation of fluid and electrolyte balance. These structures include the subfornical organ (SFO), preoptic medianus nucleus (PMN) and the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis (OVLT). In sheep, the OVLT rises from the ventricular floor over the optic chiasma and occupies most of the midline ventricular wall up to the level of anterior commissure. It contains a plexus of blood vessels at its base which possess fenestrated endothelial cells, and appears to lack ependyma. The SF

Diagnosis of ependymal intraventricular cysts of the third ventricle by computed tomography.

The radiological features of seven patients with surgically verified intraventricular ependymal cyst of the third ventricle are presented. In two patients the pre-operative diagnosis was made by ventriculography, in two by ventriculography and computed tomography (CT), and in the last three patients CT alone was sufficient for correct diagnosis: ventriculography was no longer necessary. The third ventricle is indistinguishable from a cyst with an oval or nearly round configuration with a width-to-length ratio varying between 0.53 and 0.91 (mean 0.79). The density of cerebrospinal fluid within
