Human-Biting Ixodes Ticks and Pathogen Prevalence from California, Oregon, and Washington.

From July 2006 through August 2017, a passive surveillance study of Ixodes ticks submitted from California, Oregon, and Washington was conducted by the TickReport program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. In total, 549 human-biting Ixodes ticks were submitted comprising both endemic and nonendemic species. We found that 430 endemic ticks were from 3 Ixodes species: Ixodes pacificus, Ixodes spinipalpis, and Ixodes angustus, whereas Ixodes scapularis (n = 111) was the most common species among the 119 nonendemic ticks. The submission peak for nymphal I. pacificus and I. spinipalpis wa

Comparing the effect of a leaflet and a movie in preventing tick bites and Lyme disease in The Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) has become the most common vector borne illness in the Northern hemisphere. Prevention relies predominantly on fostering protective behaviors (e.g., avoiding tick areas, using protective clothing and repellent, and doing routine tick checks post-exposure). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness (in terms of knowledge, perceived severity and susceptibility, self-efficacy, response efficacy, intention, and behavior over time) and appreciation of a leaflet and a movie as tools for informing the public in the Netherlands about ticks and LD prote

Perianal tick-bite lesion caused by a fully engorged female Amblyomma testudinarium.

A perianal tick and the surrounding skin were surgically excised from a 73-year-old man residing in a southwestern costal area of the Korean Peninsula. Microscopically a deep penetrating lesion was formed beneath the attachment site. Dense and mixed inflammatory cell infiltrations occurred in the dermis and subcutaneous tissues around the feeding lesion. Amorphous eosinophilic cement was abundant in the center of the lesion. The tick had Y-shaped anal groove, long mouthparts, ornate scutum, comma-shaped spiracular plate, distinct eyes, and fastoons. It was morphologically identified as a fully

[Complete atrioventricular block as the first clinical manifestation of a tick bite (Lyme disease)].

A 52-year-old male patient presented to the emergency department because of malaise and frequent dizziness. The ECG revealed high-grade atrioventricular block that required placement of a temporary pacemaker. There were no other abnormalities in physical and echocardiographic examination, and coronary angiography excluded the presence of coronary artery disease. IgM and IgG antibodies against Borrelia were positive, and antibiotic therapy with ceftriaxone at the dose of 2 g/die for 15 days resulted in rapid regression of atrioventricular block. Seven-day ECG recording immediately after dischar

Histopathology of tick-bite lesions in naturally infested capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) in Brazil.

In the present work features of tick-bite lesions were evaluated in capybaras naturally infested with Amblyomma cajennense and Amblyomma dubitatum ticks. Gross appearance of tick bite site was characterized by a mild swelling and erythema. Microscopic examination revealed the cement cone, a tube-like homogenous eosinophilic mass penetrating deep into the dermis. This structure was surrounded in the dermis by a cellular infiltrate and free eosinophilic granules and was associated to edema of variable intensity. Necrosis was a common feature deep in the dermis particularly at the far end of the

[Knowledge and prevention of tick-bite borreliosis: survey of the population in Alsace, an endemic area].

INTRODUCTION: European borreliosis, known to the general public as 'Lyme disease' in analogy with the American form, which it differs from in many points, is endemic in the area of Alsace and is a public health problem. The level of knowledge and prevention of the population with regard to the disease has never been assessed in France. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A survey was conducted in all the national health examination centers in Alsace using a self-applied questionnaire. The data collected concerned the socio-demographical characteristics, knowledge on the disease, history of tick bites, fear

Incidence of tick-bite in man in Aland Islands: reference to the spread of Lyme borreliosis.

The common tick Ixodes ricinus is a vector both for the virus of tick-borne viral encephalitis (Kumlinge disease, KD) and of Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme borreliosis, LB). Bites of the tick are believed to be common in Aland, an island province of Finland in the Baltic Sea. KD has been seen there for many years, and cases of LB have been diagnosed lately. The purpose of this study was to find the incidence of tick-bite among the population with possible implications for the spread of LB. A questionnaire was sent to 561 persons greater than 8 years of age out of a total of 21,281 in order to reco

Zoster meningitis and radiculomeningitis after tick bite. Cytological findings in cerebrospinal fluid.

Cytological changes in 9 samples of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 5 patients with zoster meningitis and 12 samples from 5 patients with radiculomeningitis after tick bite were examined. 5 days after the onset of the skin eruption, the CSF cells in zoster meningitis consisted of many mononuclear blast forms--large lymphocytes and 'immature' plasma cells. 11-15 days after the onset of the skin rash, they were replaced by small lymphocytes, some 'mature' plasma cells and monohistiocytes. In radiculomeningitis after tick bite, however, the CSF cells examined 10-21 days after the onset of radicula

Factors driving tick bite risk during a high-density outdoor activity.

Understanding the factors driving individual exposure to tick bites is essential for predicting tick-borne disease risk. We analyzed data from a 6-day international orienteering competition held in July 2018 in the forests of Moselle, France, involving over 1200 competitors per day and 418 monitored participants. Using generalized linear mixed models, we assessed the influence of environmental and behavioral factors (racing round, race length, exposure time, departure time and repellent use) on the occurrence of tick bites in general, and specifically on the occurrence and the number of Ixodes

Alpha-gal syndrome: Recognizing and managing a tick-bite-related meat allergy.

Alpha-gal syndrome is an emerging condition characterized by an immunoglobulin (Ig) E-mediated reaction to galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal) after consumption of mammalian-derived food products. Identified in the early 2000s, the syndrome is linked to sensitization through tick bites; in the United States, the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) is the main vector. Symptoms range from pruritus and hives to severe systemic reactions like anaphylaxis, and typically occur 3 to 8 hours after eating meat. Diagnosis involves a history of consistent symptoms, positive alpha-gal IgE serology

Salp14 epitope-based mRNA vaccination induces early recognition of a tick bite.

Repeated exposure of animals to Ixodes scapularis ticks can result in acquired tick resistance (ATR). The first manifestation of ATR is erythema at the tick bite site, however, the specific peptide targets and mechanisms associated with this early aspect of ATR are not understood. In this study, we immunized guinea pigs with a lipid nanoparticle containing the mRNA encoding 25 amino acids in the carboxyl terminus of Salp14 (Salp14-C mRNA-LNP), an I. scapularis salivary protein. The animals produced high titers of IgG directed at the carboxyl terminus of Salp14. Guinea pigs immunized with Salp1

Relapsing Fever Caused by Borrelia lonestari after Tick Bite in Alabama, USA.

We report an immunocompromised patient in Alabama, USA, 75 years of age, with relapsing fevers and pancytopenia who had spirochetemia after a tick bite. We identified Borrelia lonestari by using PCR, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. Increasing clinical availability of molecular diagnostics might identify B. lonestari as an emerging tickborne pathogen.

Tick-bite-Induced Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss and Peripheral Facial Palsy.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) and facial paralysis are 2 important otolaryngology emergencies and diagnosing the etiology is very crucial to determine the treatment strategy. Cerebellopontin angle tumors and herpes simplex infections may lead to these situations simultaneously. Also, neurodegerative and systemic infection diseases can affect the cranial nerves VII and VII together. In this article, a patient is presented who had SSHL and facial palsy that occurred after tick bite.

Scalp eschar and neck lymphadenopathy caused by Bartonella henselae after Tick Bite.

Rickettsia slovaca and Rickettsia raoultii have been associated with a syndrome characterized by scalp eschar and neck lymphadenopathy following tick bites. However, in many cases, the causative agent remains undetermined. We report 3 cases of this syndrome caused by Bartonella henselae, and we propose the term "SENLAT" to collectively describe this clinical entity.

Two cases of cellulitis in the course of African tick bite fever: a fortuitous association?

In African tick bite fever (ATBF), inoculation eschar - resulting from disruption of the cutaneous barrier - may be a risk factor for cellulitis. We report 2 cases of ATBF associated with cellulitis. A 77-year-old woman was referred for severe leg cellulitis upon returning from sub-Saharan Africa. She developed erythematous macules. Rickettsia africae was detected by PCR assay from a skin biopsy specimen, and ATBF diagnosis was confirmed. A 75-year-old man was hospitalized after his return from Zimbabwe for a maculopapular exanthema and erysipelas-like rash of the leg. The diagnosis of celluli
