Five different East Coast Fever (ECF) (Theileria parva infection) control strategies, based on tick control and/or ECF immunization, were tested in groups of traditionally managed Sanga cattle in the Central Province of Zambia over a period of 2.5 years. Two groups were kept under intensive tick control (sprayed weekly), one group immunized and one non-immunized. Two further groups were under no tick control, one group immunized and one non-immunized, while a fifth group was immunized against ECF and maintained under strategic tick control (18 sprays per year). Tick control increased milk prod

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease is a common tick-borne disease in the northeastern and midwestern United States. School-aged children aged 5-15 years are at high risk for contracting Lyme disease. Many school campuses in the mid-Atlantic United States are in areas that are near, or border with, wooded habitat.
METHODS: We surveyed school administrators to determine the perception of risk of tick encounters and tick control methods implemented on school campuses in the mid-Atlantic.
RESULTS: Responses from Pennsylvania and New Jersey districts indicate school district administrators had knowledge of

To assess the use of insecticides for tick control by commercial applicators in Connecticut, a questionnaire was mailed to 897 individuals and businesses with ornamental and turf pesticide applicator licenses. In total, 348 completed surveys were returned (38.8%). The majority of the respondents considered themselves lawn care (41.1%), landscape (31.3%) or tree care (12.6%) providers. Tick control services were offered by 16.4% (n = 57) of the respondents, all of whom apply insecticides for tick control, mainly for Ixodes scapularis Say. Over half (n = 33) also treat for the American dog tick,

Ticks are important human and animal parasites and vectors of many infectious disease agents. Control of tick activity is an effective tool to reduce the risk of contracting tick-transmitted diseases. The castor bean tick (Ixodes ricinus) is the most common tick species in Europe. It is also a vector of the causative agents of Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis, which are two of the most important arthropod-borne diseases in Europe. In recent years, increases in tick activity and incidence of tick-borne diseases have been observed in many European countries. These increases are linke

A field trial was conducted on residential properties in a Lyme disease endemic area of New Jersey to determine the efficacy of Maxforce Tick Management System (TMS) bait boxes modified with doxycycline hyclate-laden bait to reduce the acarological risk of Lyme disease and the utility of galvanized steel shrouds to protect the bait boxes from squirrel depredation and ability to routinely service these devices. The strategy began with a 9-wk deployment against larvae followed by a 17-wk deployment against nymphs and larvae the second year. Passive application of fipronil reduced nymphal and lar

Tick-borne diseases are a major public health threat in the United States, with Lyme disease being the most commonly reported vector-borne disease. Tick-bite prevention is predominantly focused on education and the use of repellents. Currently, the use of tick control interventions is rare, particularly on public properties, in part because deployment costs can be difficult to determine. This study focused on New Jersey, where both Ixodes scapularis Say and Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae) are common throughout much of the state and there is a high incidence of tick-borne diseases.

Ticks are ectoparasites of wild and domestic animals, and humans. A more comprehensive understanding of tick function and the tick-pathogen interface is needed to formulate improved tick-control methods. RNA interference (RNAi) is the most widely used gene-silencing technique in ticks where the use of other methods of genetic manipulations has been limited. In the short time that RNAi has been available, it has proved to be a valuable tool for studying tick gene function, the characterization of the tick-pathogen interface, and the screening and characterization of tick protective antigens. Infectious diseases have caused significant economic and human losses worldwide. Growing concerns exist regarding climate change potentially exacerbating the spread of these diseases, particularly those transmitted by vectors such as ticks and mosquitoes. Tick-borne diseases, such as Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS), can be particularly detrimental to elderly and immunocompromised individuals. This study utilizes a mathematical modeling approach to predict changes in tick populations under climate change scenarios, incorporating tick ecology and climate-sensitive parameters.

Human illness associated with tick bites is on the rise in the United States. One root cause is that several human-biting tick species serving as pathogen vectors, including the blacklegged tick and the lone star tick, have expanded their geographic ranges in recent decades, with many areas in the U.S. now harboring multiple species of vector ticks. As currently used, personal tick bite prevention and environmental tick control have not succeeded in stemming the rising tide of humans being bitten by ticks. A national strategy to prevent and control vector-borne diseases provides a blueprint to

Two herds of experimental Sanga cattle were maintained under traditional savanna grazing management for three years in the Central Province of Zambia. One herd was kept free of ticks by regular acaricide treatment, while the other was given no tick control. Milk production, growth rate, fertility and mortality were monitored throughout the trial. The tick-free herd performed significantly better than the tick-infested herd, but the value of the additional production was much less than the cost of the acaricide used. It is concluded that there is no economic justification for intensive tick con

Ticks are responsible for the transmission of viral, bacterial, and protozoal diseases of man and animals and also produce significant economic losses to cattle industry. The use of acaricides constitutes a major component of integrated tick control strategies. However, this is accompanied by the selection of acaricide-resistant ticks and contamination of environment and milk and meat products with drug residues. These issues highlight the need for alternative approaches to control tick infestations and have triggered the search for tick protective antigens for vaccine development. Vaccination

This study compared four strategies for controlling Rhipicephalus microplus in steers under field conditions in the savannah Biome (Cerrado) of Brazil, including two control groups: traditional strategic control (T1), palliative control (T2), an alternative experimental strategic control (T3), and pasture spelling during the dry season (T4). Twenty-four Girolando steers were allocated into four groups (n = 6) and monitored for tick infestation over an 11-month period. Efficacy was assessed using cumulative and monthly tick counts on steers, tick-free periods, and indicators of pasture disinfes

Ticks are second to mosquitoes as a vector of human diseases and are the first vector of animal diseases with a great impact on livestock farming. Tick vaccines represent a sustainable and effective alternative to chemical acaricides for the control of tick infestations and transmitted pathogens. The application of proteomics to tick vaccine development is a fairly recent area, which has resulted in the characterization of some tick-host-pathogen interactions and the identification of candidate protective antigens. Areas covered: In this article, we review the application and possibilities of

Numerous studies have assessed the efficacy of environmentally based control methods to suppress populations of the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis Say), but few of these estimated the cost of control. We estimated costs for a range of tick control methods (including habitat management, deer exclusion or population reduction, broadcast of acaricides, and use of host-targeted acaricides) implemented singly or in combination and applied to a model community comprising 320 residential properties and parklands. Using the high end for cost ranges, tick control based on a single method was estim

BACKGROUND: Tick calreticulin (CRT) is a calcium-binding protein secreted into the host during blood feeding. It has been used as a biomarker of tick exposure and has potential as an anti-tick vaccine, but there is no information about these uses for Haemaphysalis longicornis CRT (HlCRT). We synthesized recombinant H. longicornis CRT (rHlCRT) and evaluated its potential for tick bite diagnosis and for disrupting tick infestations.
METHODS: The responses of mice and rabbits exposed to H. longicornis ticks were measured with ELISA to determine the antibody level against rHlCRT. To evaluate the

Tick-borne diseases of animals and humans are becoming more problematic in the US. Consequently, there have been numerous investigations into several tick-borne disease systems, with Lyme disease or borreliosis being the most investigated. At the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University, we study a variety of tick-borne disease systems relevant to animal and human health. Through our collective multidisciplinary expertise, our goal was to showcase what is known about systems we are most familiar with and outline research gaps in tick ecology, tick-borne disease epidemiolog

The efficacy of amitraz on cattle ticks was assessed by susceptibility tests, spraying and dipping trials. Tests on the susceptibility of three tick species, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Amblyomma variegatum and Boophilus decoloratus to amitraz (technical grade-purity 98.6% w/w) showed all 15 tick strains tested to be highly susceptible, with LC50 ranging between 0.001% and 0.03%, and LC99, between 0.01% and 0.07%. Spraying trials were carried out on calves infested with R. appendiculatus, A. variegatum and B. decoloratus. Amitraz wettable powder [as Taktic total replacement (TR)] was tested
