Molecular Epidemiology and Risk Factors of Theileria annulata Infection and Rhipicephalus and Hyalomma Tick Infestation in Three Districts of Northern Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Ticks and tick-borne diseases pose a major threat to livestock productivity in tropical and subtropical regions, by transmitting pathogens of veterinary and public health concern, including Theileria species. Despite the threats posed to the large ruminant industry, integrated studies on the causative agent of tropical theileriosis and its tick vectors from the same infected hosts, along with their associated risk factors, remain limited in northern Pakistan. This study investigated Theileria infection, its associated tick species, and host- and environmental-related risk factors i

Molecular and morphological characterization of hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting rodents in Southern Iran: evidence of a cryptic Haemaphysalis species.

BACKGROUND: Hard ticks are important vectors of various zoonotic diseases. Identifying closely related tick species using morphological methods alone can be challenging. This study aimed to assess the taxonomic status of hard ticks infesting rodents in southern Iran using morphological and molecular approaches. METHODS: Ticks were collected from the ear bases and rears of rodents and identified morphologically. Genomic DNA was extracted, and the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COX1) and internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) genes were amplified via polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Sequencing and

First Molecular Survey and Phylogenetic Identification of a Zoonotic Pathogen, Anaplasma platys, in Hard Ticks Infesting Dogs in Southern Taiwan.

Anaplasma platys was recognized as a zoonotic pathogen for canine and human infections. However, there is no confirmed evidence demonstrating the existence of A. platys within hard ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato) infesting dogs in Southern Taiwan. We conducted a field survey for the detection of Anaplasma infection by screening the R. sanguineus s. l. ticks collected from dogs. Molecular detection was performed via a nested-PCR assay targeting the 16S rRNA gene of Anaplasma. Phylogenetic analyses were performed via neighbor-joining against maximum parsimony methods. The genetic rel

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever viral RNA-free hard ticks infesting livestock in a rural region of southern Iran.

Tick-borne viral diseases, including Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), are often fatal infectious diseases if left untreated. They impose a significant burden of morbidity on human health. Given the history of this disease in Fars province, Iran, and the CDC report on a recent fatal case in a remote county, and since the infectivity of ticks in this area has so far been neglected, this study was undertaken to investigate the above issue. Ticks were collected from seven stations. Morphological identification was conducted using valid taxonomic keys. Molecular tests were implemented on the

Hard tick infestation of birds of prey (Aves: Accipitriformes, Strigiformes, Falconiformes) in the Western Palearctic: New data and literature review.

Tick infestation of songbirds has been extensively studied at global and regional scales but relevant data on birds of prey remain scarce and fragmentary. Raptors are of particular epidemiological relevance because their large size, wide-ranging movements and nesting habits may facilitate long-distance dispersal of ticks, and endophilic tick species (e.g. from prey animals) may even persist in their re-used nests. In this study, we aimed to compensate for the lack of comprehensive data in this context. First, more than 1800 birds of prey were examined at 61 sites in Central and South-Eastern E

Incidental infestations of humans by hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) in Colombia: Case reports and record of Amblyomma cajennense sensu stricto.

In Colombia, there are few studies that describe tick parasitism in humans, as well as its demographic and ecological characteristics. Additionally, multiple cases of human rickettsiosis caused by highly pathogenic Rickettsia species have been reported, whose vector remains unknown. This study reports new cases of human infestation by hard ticks in rural areas of different municipalities of Colombia between 2021 and 2023. The collected ticks were identified using taxonomic keys and molecular and phylogenetic analyses. Likewise, geographical data and other variables associated with parasitism w

Molecular screening of Babesia, Hepatozoon, and Theileria (Apicomplexa: Piroplasmida) in ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting farm ruminants in Peninsular Malaysia.

Ticks are obligate hematophagous arachnids that feed on both humans and animals. Despite the extensive research on detection of bacteria in ixodid ticks in Malaysia, there remains limited knowledge about the detection of protozoa in these ectoparasites, especially in those that feed on farm ruminants. In this study, 1,241 ticks belonging to four species (Rhipicephalus microplus, R. haemaphysaloides, Haemaphysalis bispinosa, and H. wellingtoni) were collected from 674 farm ruminants across Peninsular Malaysia. The ticks were pooled and subjected to DNA extraction, followed by protozoal screenin

Short Communication: Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia spp. in ixodid ticks infesting red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in Great Britain.

Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are found throughout the United Kingdom (UK), and can reach high population densities in urban areas. They are often infested with ticks which may carry tick-borne pathogens, leading to a risk of transmission to domestic animals and humans. This study investigated the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in ticks sourced from red fox carcasses across Great Britain between 2018 and 2022. Tick species were identified using morphological keys and molecular barcoding, followed by specific pathogen testing using PCR. In total, 227 ticks were collected from 93 foxes. Pooling

Ixodes ricinus infesting snakes: Insights on a new tick-host association in a Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato endemic area.

The castor bean tick Ixodes ricinus is one of the most abundant tick species in Europe, being able to parasitize a wide number of vertebrate hosts, including mammals, birds, and reptiles. This tick species has an important role as vector of zoonotic pathogens, including the causative agents of Lyme borreliosis (i.e. Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato). Here, we provide insights on a new tick-host association (i.e. I. ricinus infesting snakes) in an area recently recognized as endemic for reptile-associated zoonotic species of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l.

Ixodes ricinus ticks removed from humans in Northern Europe: seasonal pattern of infestation, attachment sites and duration of feeding.

BACKGROUND: The common tick Ixodes ricinus is the main vector in Europe of the tick-borne encephalitis virus and of several species of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex, which are the etiological agents of Lyme borreliosis. The risk to contract bites of I. ricinus is dependent on many factors including the behaviour of both ticks and people. The tick's site of attachment on the human body and the duration of tick attachment may be of clinical importance. Data on I. ricinus ticks, which were found attached to the skin of people, were analysed regarding potentially stage-specific diffe

Widespread movement of invasive cattle fever ticks (Rhipicephalus microplus) in southern Texas leads to shared local infestations on cattle and deer.

BACKGROUND: Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is a highly-invasive tick that transmits the cattle parasites (Babesia bovis and B. bigemina) that cause cattle fever. R. microplus and Babesia are endemic in Mexico and ticks persist in the United States inside a narrow tick eradication quarantine area (TEQA) along the Rio Grande. This containment area is threatened by unregulated movements of illegal cattle and wildlife like white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus). METHODS: Using 11 microsatellite loci we genotyped 1,247 R. microplus from 63 Texas collections, including outbreak infest

Differential recognition of saliva antigens from the ixodid tick Amblyomma hebraeum (Acari: Ixodidae) by sera from infested and immunized rabbits.

We determined the protein composition and antigenic content of saliva from Amblyomma hebraeum female ticks of different weight classes. The mean protein concentration of saliva of small partially fed ticks (< 100 mg) was 333 +/- 83 micrograms/ml and that of large partially fed ticks (150-420 mg) was 59 +/- 14 micrograms/ml. The reduction in concentration mostly was caused by the significantly higher fluid volume per minute secreted by large ticks. Polypeptide analysis of saliva indicated the presence of a protein (14 kilodaltons [kD]) only in ticks weighing < 60 mg. Other saliva proteins of 21

Virome of Giant Panda-Infesting Ticks Reveals Novel Bunyaviruses and Other Viruses That Are Genetically Close to Those from Giant Pandas.

Tick infestations have been reported as one of the factors threatening the health of giant pandas, but studies of viral pathogens carried by ticks feeding on the blood of giant pandas are limited. To assess whether blood-sucking ticks of giant pandas can carry viral pathogens and if so, whether the viruses in ticks are associated with those previously detected in giant panda hosts, we determined the viromes of ticks detached from giant pandas in a field stocking area in Sichuan Province, southwest China. Using viral metagenomics we identified 32 viral species in ticks, half of which (including
