Tick-borne Borrelia infection in patients with Bell's palsy.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was applied to serum samples of 94 patients diagnosed as having Bell's palsy: they were studied throughout two consecutive years in an attempt to establish serologic evidence of a tick-borne spirochetal infection. A strain of Borrelia spirochetes, isolated from Swedish Ixodes ricinus ticks, was used as an antigen, and separate estimations of spirochetal IgG and IgM antibodies were made; serum samples with titers above the 95th-percentile level of 120 healthy individuals were considered positive. Thirteen percent of the patients' serum samples were IgG-posit

Selected neurotoxins.

The small animal practitioner is faced with an infinite number of potential toxins in our modern environment. Unapproved usage of drugs and insecticides requires the practitioner to keep informed about the development of new toxic syndromes. Recreational drug toxicosis in animals is still seen with some frequency in clinical practice and should not be overlooked, even when the owner denies the possible exposure. In this article, we have discussed a few of the more common and newer neurotoxicities seen in clinical practice today. Neurologic toxicities are complex, but treatment can be rewarding

CD8+ T-cells mediate immunopathology in tick-borne encephalitis.

Epidemics of tick-borne encephalitis involving thousands of humans occur annually in the forested regions of Europe and Asia. Despite the importance of this disease, the underlying basis for the development of encephalitis remains undefined. Here, we prove the key role of CD8(+) T-cells in the immunopathology of tick-borne encephalitis, as demonstrated by prolonged survival of SCID or CD8(-/-) mice, following infection, when compared with immunocompetent mice or mice with adoptively transferred CD8(+) T-cells. The results imply that tick-borne encephalitis is an immunopathological disease and

Hematology and Plasma Biochemistry of Wild Spectacled Flying Foxes ( Pteropus conspicillatus) in Australia.

The spectacled flying fox ( Pteropus conspicillatus) is listed as vulnerable to extinction in Australia. The species' restricted population is in decline, putatively attributed to decreasing habitat, climatic extremes, anthropogenic activities, and more recently, mass mortality events associated with tick paralysis and neonatal cleft palate syndrome. Knowledge of fundamental physiologic parameters of the species is limited. To address this knowledge gap, we sampled 50 wild-caught adult spectacled flying foxes in June (winter) in Far North Queensland, Australia. Hematologic and plasma biochemis

Guillain-Barré syndrome: perspectives with infants and children.

An acute flaccid paraparesis or ascending quadriparesis in an infant or child constitutes a very important pediatric neurology emergency. The Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the most frequent cause. This is primarily an autoimmune, post-infectious, demyelinating, peripheral nervous system process. A small percentage of children develop a primary axonal process not unlike that identified more commonly in China. Because of the potential for acute respiratory compromise, any child suspected of having GBS needs immediate hospitalization. The major considerations in differential diagnosis include

West Nile Virus and Other Domestic Nationally Notifiable Arboviral Diseases - United States, 2018.

Arthropodborne viruses (arboviruses) are transmitted to humans primarily through the bites of infected mosquitoes and ticks. West Nile virus (WNV) is the leading cause of domestically acquired arboviral disease in the continental United States (1). Other arboviruses, including eastern equine encephalitis, Jamestown Canyon, La Crosse, Powassan, and St. Louis encephalitis viruses, cause sporadic cases of disease and occasional outbreaks. This report summarizes surveillance data reported to CDC for 2018 on nationally notifiable arboviruses. It excludes dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses becaus

[Erythema migrans disease. 3 case examples with neurologic complications].

The erythema-migrans-disease is closely related to Lyme-disease as described in the USA, and represents a tickborne spirochetosis with highest incidence during summer and autumn. Besides nonspecific general symptoms in its earlier stages, it is characterized by a distinctive erythema migrans; later, additional neurological, cardiac and/or arthritic symptoms may develope. Its typical neurologic complication, the lymphocytic meningoradiculitis Garin-Bujadoux-Bannwarth, was observed in three children whose clinical features illustrate the great variability of symptoms of Erythema-migrans-disease.

Diagnostic significance of IgG-synthesizing activated B cells in acute inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system.

An immunohistological technique was used to identify activated, i.e. IgG-synthesizing, B cells in cerebrospinal fluid. A total of 177 patients suffering from inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system were investigated. Activated B cells were found in 61% of patients with bacterial meningitis, especially in lethal or prolonged cases. The number of activated B lymphocytes was low in most cases of viral meningitis, whereas in tick-borne meningopolyneuritis Bannwarth, a very strong B cell activation was detectable. In all inflammatory diseases investigated, the B cell response was restri

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are transmitted to humans primarily through the bites of infected mosquitoes and ticks. Since West Nile virus (WNV) was first detected in the Western Hemisphere in 1999, it has become the leading cause of neuroinvasive arboviral disease in the United States. However, several other arboviruses continue to cause sporadic cases and seasonal outbreaks of neuroinvasive disease (i.e., meningitis, encephalitis, or acute flaccid paralysis). Arachnid toxinology in Australia: from clinical toxicology to potential applications.

The unique geographic isolation of Australia has resulted in the evolution of a distinctive range of Australian arachnid fauna. Through the pioneering work of a number of Australian arachnologists, toxinologists, and clinicians, the taxonomy and distribution of new species, the effective clinical treatment of envenomation, and the isolation and characterisation of the many distinctive neurotoxins, has been achieved. In particular, work has focussed on several Australian arachnids, including red-back and funnel-web spiders, paralysis ticks, and buthid scorpions that contain neurotoxins capable

[Diagnostic value of determination of the blood concentrations of serotonin and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in patients with tick-borne encephalitis].

The paper shows the informative value of changes in the serum levels of serotonin and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in 44 patients in the acute period of tickborne encephalitis. Group 1 included 35 patients with non-paralytic neuroinfection; Group 2 comprised 9 patients with paralytic neuroinfection. The serum level of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein increased and that of serotonin decreased in relation to the form and severity of the disease at its height. The elevated level of the former and the low concentration of the latter may serve as an early predictor of the development of a

Diffusion-Weighted Imaging Findings of Ischemic Spinal Injury in a Chondrodystrophic Dog With Fibrocartilaginous Embolism.

A 9-year-old, intact male Shih Tzu dog presented with systemic weakness and peracute onset of tetraplegia. Tetraplegia with lower motor neuron signs was noted upon neurological examination. Diseases that cause acute flaccid tetraparesis, such as acute fulminating myasthenia gravis, polyradiculoneuritis, tick paralysis, and botulism, were ruled out based on the medical history, normal electrophysiological tests, and non-response to the neostigmine challenging test. Initial 0.3-Tesla (T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings included sharply demarcated intramedullary lesions at the C3-C6 lev

[Multiple erythema migrans, Borrelia lymphocytoma and neuroborreliosis in a child].

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease after a tick bite often presents as erythema migrans, yet less frequent variants of this disease, such as Borrelia lymphocytoma, multiple erythema migrans and neuroborreliosis, are also seen occasionally. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a tick-bitten child who first presented with an indistinct macular erythema around the left eye and a more distinct macular erythema on and around the left ear. The next day, she developed a facial palsy. INTERPRETATION: The case was interpreted as facial multiple erythema migrans and Borrelia lymphocytoma on the ear, followed

[Late neurological sequelae of tick-borne encephalitis in the population of the Olsztyn province].

The authors studied the incidence of late and permanent neurological sequelae of tick-borne encephalitis in the population of the Province of Olsztyn. The investigations were carried out in a group of 103 patients who were affected in the years 1970--1974. The diagnosis was confirmed in all cases with epidemiological, clinical and laboratory investigations and serological evidence of tick-borne encephalitis. It was shown in these studies that tick-borne encephalitis caused development of permanent lesions in the central and peripheral nervous system in 25.3% of cases. It was observed, moreover

[Central european tick-borne encephalitis from 1969 to 1972 in central bohemia (author's transl)].

From 1969 to 1972 1,080 patients admitted with a diagnosis of viral meningoencephalitis were treated at the Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Prague-Bulovka. In 633 of these patients tick-borne encephalitis could be detected serologically. The epidemiological conditions and the clinical course of the disease are described. Paresis of the extremities and the cranial nerves occurred in 12.8% of the patients; the outcome was fatal in 0.8%. Treatment in hospital usually lasted 3 to 4 weeks and patients were unfit for work for a further 6 to 10 weeks after dismissal.
