Clinical signs indicative of temporomandibular disorders in adults: time trends and associated factors.

The study aimed to examine possible time trends in the prevalence of clinical signs indicative of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) in an adult population, to analyse possible associations between TMD signs and associated factors and to estimate the need for TMD treatment. Three independent, stratified and randomly selected samples of around 100 individuals in the age groups of 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 years participated in the Jönköping studies in 1983,1993 and 2003. The study material consisted of 1,693 subjects who, after answering a questionnaire and being interviewed about the presence of

Risk factors for a prolonged operative time in a single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

BACKGROUND: A prolonged operative time is associated with adverse post-operative outcomes in laparoscopic surgery. Although a single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SILC) requires a longer operative time as compared with a conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy, risk factors for a prolonged operative time in SILC remain unknown. METHODS: A total of 20 clinical variables were retrospectively reviewed to identify factors for a prolonged operative time (longer than 3 h) in a total of 220 consecutive patients undergoing SILC. RESULTS: The median operative time was 145 min (range, 55-43

Factors predicting the time until atrial fibrillation recurrence after concomitant left atrial ablation.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment of atrial fibrillation, a risk factor for morbidity and mortality, by left atrial ablation is a less complex procedure which is increasingly performed in conjunction with surgery for various heart diseases. Although restoration of sinus rhythm is effective initially, atrial fibrillation may recur. We investigated factors predicting the time until its recurrence. METHODS: Between January 2003 and December 2005, 162 consecutive patients (52.5% male, age 69+/-8.7 years) with permanent atrial fibrillation underwent concomitant left atrial ablation and isolated or combined mit

[UV exposure in Switzerland: time- and topography-associated factors important for the skin].

The intensity of UV-A and UV-B-radiation in Switzerland shows big differences that result from the various altitudes, the season and the time of the day. Additionally the intensity of UV-radiation is influenced by other factors like aerosols, cloudiness and ozone. In higher altitudes there is an additional enhancement by reflection of snow. The most important consequences of the UV-radiation for the population are, however, relevant in spring and summer time during the bathing season and during the late winter season for ski tourists. On a day with a clear sky in summer the UV-radiation can re

[Risk assessment of benign asbestosis (dose-effect relationship, time-effect relationship, co-factors)].

Despite the lack of precision of asbestos exposure assessments and the limitations of the main diagnostic epidemiological tool for asbestos-related diseases (i.e. standard X ray films), several issues concerning the risk of development of asbestos-related diseases are well established. For asbestosis, now a rare disease, the existence of a positive dose-response relationship, with a threshold or no-effect level, has been clearly demonstrated. The slope of the relationship curve is steeper for amphiboles than for chysotile, as it is for increased fiber length. Asbestosis is associated with an i

Supraglottic laryngeal carcinoma: an analysis of dose-time-volume factors in 410 patients.

Four hundred and ten patients with supraglottic laryngeal carcinoma treated with moderate dose radical radiotherapy with surgery for salvage (RRSS) were analyzed in detail to determine optimal dose-time-volume parameters to be used in the treatment of each stage of supraglottic carcinoma. In the RRSS group 41% are alive and well at 5 years, 38% died of their tumor and 21% of intercurrent disease. Presence or absence of nodal disease has a major impact on survival. Local control is approximately 70% in T1, T2N0 patients and approximately 50% in T3 and T4N0 patients. Seventeen percent of T1 and

Assessment of transfer-time and time-to-surgery as risk factors to survival in Gastroschisis (GS) in a LMIC; an eight-year review.

BACKGROUND: The management of Gastroschisis in LMICs continues to be a challenge and is associated with very poor outcomes in contrast with HICs where survival rates near 100%. The purpose of this work is to provide an overview of survival over the past 8 years in a high-flow tertiary centre in Africa. It also investigates the effect of transfer-time and time-to-surgery on outcome. METHODS: Retrospective case note review of all GS admissions. The variables assessed were gender, gestational age, weight, type of GS, transfer time, time to surgery and type of surgery. The primary outcome was sur

[Investigation of Factors Affecting Viral Clearance Time by Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction Method in Nasopharyngeal Swab Samples of COVID-19 Patients].

The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues to threaten the lives of millions of people. Viral shedding through the respiratory tract is the main risk factor for the transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome-2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus from sick individuals to healthy individuals. In this study, we aimed to investigate the viral clearance (VC) time in PCR tests of COVID-19 patients and the possible factors affecting this time. Seventy patients older than 18 years of age whose presence of SARS-CoV-2 virus was proven by real-time polymerase chain reaction (Rt-PCR) in nasophar

Bully-victim prevalence, over-time stability, and risk and protective factors during elementary school.

BACKGROUND: Children who both bully other children and are victims of bullies (BVs) are at greater risk for externalizing and internalizing problems, poor academic outcomes, and increased involvement in criminal behavior later in life. Yet the early emergence, over-time stability, and risk and protective factors for being BVs are largely unknown. METHODS: We analyzed data from 7,326 children in third through fifth grade participating in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-2011 (ECLS-K: 2011), a nationally representative and multiyear longitudinal cohort. We firs
