Optogenetic Manipulation of Neuronal Activity to Modulate Behavior in Freely Moving Mice.

Optogenetic modulation of neuronal circuits in freely moving mice affects acute and long-term behavior. This method is able to perform manipulations of single neurons and region-specific transmitter release, up to whole neuronal circuitries in the central nervous system, and allows the direct measurement of behavioral outcomes. Neurons express optogenetic tools via an injection of viral vectors carrying the DNA of choice, such as Channelrhodopsin2 (ChR2). Light is brought into specific brain regions via chronic optical implants that terminate directly above the target region. After two weeks o

A Novel Mouse Home Cage Lickometer System Reveals Sex- and Housing-Based Influences on Alcohol Drinking.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a significant global health issue. Despite historically higher rates among men, AUD prevalence and negative alcohol-related outcomes in women are rising. Loneliness in humans has been associated with increased alcohol use, and traditional rodent drinking models involve single housing, presenting challenges for studying social enrichment. We developed LIQ PARTI (Lick Instance Quantifier with Poly-Animal RFID Tracking Integration), an open-source tool to examine home cage continuous access two-bottle choice drinking behavior in a group-housed setting, investigating

Sexual Risk Behaviors Constructed in Iranian Women's Life with Substance Use Disorders: A New Implication of Human Ecological Theory.

BACKGROUND: Drug abuse is one of the important variables influencing protective sexual behavior. The objective of this study was to explore how risky sexual behaviors develop in drug abusing women using human ecological theory. METHODS: In this study, we used a descriptive exploratory approach. The participants were 32 drug abusing women from two of the selected drop-in centers (DICs) in south Tehran, Iran, where we could have access to a vast number of female drug users. Data was collected using semi-structured face-to-face interviews. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the dat

Incorporating multidimensional behavior into a risk management tool for a critically endangered and migratory species.

Conservation of migratory species exhibiting wide-ranging and multidimensional behaviors is challenged by management efforts that only utilize horizontal movements or produce static spatial-temporal products. For the deep-diving, critically endangered eastern Pacific leatherback turtle, tools that predict where turtles have high risks of fisheries interactions are urgently needed to prevent further population decline. We incorporated horizontal-vertical movement model results with spatial-temporal kernel density estimates and threat data (gear-specific fishing) to develop monthly maps of spati

Behavior assessment and applications for BRD diagnosis: preweaned dairy calves.

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is an important disease in dairy calves due to its long-lasting effects. Early identification results in better outcomes for the animal, but producers struggle to identify all calves with BRD. Sickness behavior, or the behavioral changes that accompany illness, has been investigated for its usefulness as a disease detection tool. Behavioral changes associated with BRD include decreased milk intake and drinking speed, depressed attitude, and less likelihood of approaching a novel object or stationary human. Behavioral measurements are useful, as they can be coll

INDISIM-Paracoccus, an individual-based and thermodynamic model for a denitrifying bacterium.

We have developed an individual-based model for denitrifying bacteria. The model, called INDISIM-Paracoccus, embeds a thermodynamic model for bacterial yield prediction inside the individual-based model INDISIM, and is designed to simulate the bacterial cell population behavior and the product dynamics within the culture. The INDISIM-Paracoccus model assumes a culture medium containing succinate as a carbon source, ammonium as a nitrogen source and various electron acceptors such as oxygen, nitrate, nitrite, nitric oxide and nitrous oxide to simulate in continuous or batch culture the differen

Global screening of health behaviors: Introducing Lev-screening (Lev-s)-development and psychometric evaluation.

Poor health behaviors have been identified as a critical factor for the burden on healthcare systems and individual suffering. However, comprehensive assessment of health behaviors is time-consuming and often neglected. To address this, we introduce the Lev-screening (Lev-s), a new, brief tool that covers multiple health behaviors. The Lev-s assesses ten health behaviors-physical activity, diet, alcohol use, tobacco use, illegal drug use, sleep, social relations, meaningful activities, sexual health, and screen health-using 33 items. This article details the development and psychometric evalua

Efficacy of a treatment program based on positive psychology for drug use in juvenile offenders.

One of the factors that increase the likelihood of adolescents starting to exhibit and consolidate anti-social behavior is drug use, with a consistent pattern of consumption of different substance found in young offenders (Aebi, Bessler & Steinhausen, 2021). A cognitive-behavioral group treatment program inspired by the positive psychology approach was developed and applied to drug use in minors deprived of liberty (experimental group); the results were compared to those of a group of adolescents with the same type of drug use in the same center (active control group) at two points in time: du

Use of Preclinical Drug vs. Food Choice Procedures to Evaluate Candidate Medications for Cocaine Addiction.

Drug addiction is a disease that manifests as an inappropriate allocation of behavior towards the procurement and use of the abused substance and away from other behaviors that produce more adaptive reinforcers (e.g. exercise, work, family and social relationships). The goal of treating drug addiction is not only to decrease drug-maintained behaviors, but also to promote a reallocation of behavior towards alternative, nondrug reinforcers. Experimental procedures that offer concurrent access to both a drug reinforcer and an alternative, nondrug reinforcer provide a research tool for assessment

Quantitative evaluation of the clinical effects of S-adenosylmethionine on mood and behavior in Lesch-Nyhan patients.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND, RATIONALE, AND METHODS: Lesch-Nyhan disease is a rare, X-linked disorder due to hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase deficiency. To evaluate reported benefit on mood and behavior obtained by the administration of S-adenosyl-L-methionine in this condition, we developed 2 quantitative evaluation tools, and used them to assess the effects of the drug in our population: the weekly questionnaire and the resistance to self-injurious behavior test. We performed an open-label, dose-escalation trial of the drug on 14 patients. RESULTS: Four patients tolerated the drug and rep

Evaluation of the impact of family relations on prisoners' health in Spain.

OBJECTIVES: Literature on this issue has shown a high prevalence of alcohol and other drug use in the prison population. Although many risk factors have been linked to this behavior in prison, it is not common to find research that analyses the influence of family/social contact in prison. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 2,709 inmates (2,484 men and 225 women) in 9 prisons in Spain, data was collected through self-report questionnaires, including information at socio-demographic level, family-social contact and use of alcohol and other drugs in the last month i

Moral Injury is a Risk Factor for Substance Use and Suicidality Among US Military Veterans with and without Traumatic Brain Injury.

A national survey of United States veterans was conducted, yielding 252 veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and 1235 veterans without TBI. Participants were asked questions about moral injury, suicidality, substance use, and other sociodemographic variables. Multivariable linear regression analysis was used to examine the previously described relationships. Increasing severity of moral injury was associated with higher scores on the substance use tool (b = 0.02, p = 0.04), although the magnitude of effect was not different from those without TBI (Z = - 0.57, p = 0.72). Increasing severi

Oral health interventions for UK-based Bengali children and their families: a scoping review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: This review will synthesize existing evidence on oral health interventions developed for Bengali children in the UK and identify the application of behavior change frameworks to their culture. INTRODUCTION: Despite improvements in children's oral health over the past half-century, a higher percentage of Bengali children experience dental caries than other ethnicities in the UK. The experience of dental caries is strongly shaped by oral health behaviors, including parental attitudes, traditional dietary practices, and cultural beliefs about teeth. Certain oral health interventions i

Chicken or the Egg: The Reciprocal Association Between Feeding Behavior and Animal Welfare and Their Impact on Productivity in Dairy Cows.

Feeding behavior in dairy cattle has a significant impact on feed efficiency, which is important for increasing the profitability of livestock and, at the same time, reducing the environmental impact. Feeding behavior can be measured by feeding time, meal duration, meal frequency, feeding rate, and rumination time. Higher feed intake is related to lower feed efficiency; whereas, an increase in feeding time facilitates chewing, reduces feed particle size and increases its digestibility. More frequent and shorter meals are usually associated with a more efficient use of feed due to improvement o

What is the role of infant banging in the development of tool use?

Throughout the first year, infants are known to engage in repetitive motor behaviors. The current study examines the changes in the hand trajectory of one such behavior, banging, during the second half-year and the implications of these changes for tool use development. Fourteen (7- to 14-month-old) infants were seated at a table and presented with a small wooden cube. Kinematic measurements of their banging movements were recorded at 240 Hz. Analyses revealed stable temporal characteristics of the hand trajectories within and across infants. Results further indicated that as infants became ol

Strategies for Disease Containment: A Biological-Behavioral-Intervention Computational Informatics Framework.

In this study, we describe the development and use of a biological-behavior-intervention computational informatics framework that combines disease modelling for infectious virus with stratifications for social behavior and employment, and resource logistics. The framework incorporates heterogeneous group behavior and interaction dynamics, and optimizes intervention and resources for effective containment. We demonstrate its usage by analyzing and optimizing containment strategies for the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak, and its implementation for responses to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in

Rat Tongue Kinematics with Markerless XROMM Using DeepLabCut and Marker Masking.

X-ray Reconstruction of Moving Morphology (XROMM) enables 3D tracking of implanted radiopaque markers in animals to study biomechanics. In recent years, DeepLabCut (DLC) has emerged as an important tool for markerless pose estimation in areas of the biological sciences such as neuroscience or behavioral research. While the XROMM markers can be detected and tracked using traditional image processing, DLC has been proven to improve XMALab-based workflows. However, those methods are prone to the exact marker positions and are not robust concerning missing markers. We propose to use XMALab results

Development of a Data Logger for Capturing Human-Machine Interaction in Wheelchair Head-Foot Steering Sensor System in Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy.

The use of data logging systems for capturing wheelchair and user behavior has increased rapidly over the past few years. Wheelchairs ensure more independent mobility and better quality of life for people with motor disabilities. Especially, for people with complex movement disorders, such as dyskinetic cerebral palsy (DCP) who lack the ability to walk or to handle objects, wheelchairs offer a means of integration into daily life. The mobility of DCP patients is based on a head-foot wheelchair steering system. In this work, a data logging system is proposed to capture data from human-wheelchai
