Smoking, tooth loss and oral hygiene practices have significant and site-specific impacts on the microbiome of oral mucosal surfaces: a cross-sectional study.

We investigated bacterial colonisation patterns of healthy mucosa (buccal, tongue, palate and floor of mouth) in a cohort of adults in order to determine how smoking, tooth loss, plaque levels and oral hygiene practices impacted on mucosal colonisation. A total of 322 swabs were recovered from 256 participants, of whom 46% were current smokers. We analysed colonization by sequencing the V1-V3 regions of the 16S rRNA gene. Palate and tongue microbiomes generally exhibited greater biodiversity than buccal and floor of mouth. Although Neisseria, Lautropia and Haemophilus spp. showed reduced abund

Impact of soft palate visibility and tongue position on early diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea among patients with tooth loss - An observational preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was estimated to affect 15% to 30% of males and 5% to 15% of females with prevalence increasing with progressive tooth loss and its early identification can reduce the sequalae of OSA. Apnea-hypopnea index is confirmatory but unsuitable for clinical settings to detect OSA and concise screening tools are required to detect OSA in edentulous patients. AIM: To evaluate the impact of soft palate visibility and tongue position on incidence of OSA among edentulous patients. METHODOLOGY: Thirty two edentulous participants aged between 30 and 65 years were g

Alveolar bone resorption after primary tooth loss has a negative impact on straightforward implant installation in patients with agenesis of the lower second premolar.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the alveolar bone dimensions in patients with lower second premolar (P2) agenesis prior to and after primary molar loss on CT scans, and assess the possibility for straightforward implant placement. METHODS: Alveolar bone dimensions were evaluated on 150 mandibular CT scans in three groups: (i) agenesis of P2, with the primary tooth in situ, and regularly erupted first premolar (P1) and molar (M1) (AW); (ii) agenesis of P2, without the primary tooth in situ for ≥3 m, but regularly erupted P1 and M1 (AWO); and (iii) P1, P2, and M1 regularly erupted (CTR). The possibility

Impact of tooth-related factors on photodynamic therapy effectiveness during active periodontal therapy: A 6-months split-mouth randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The persistence of periodontal pockets > 5 mm after periodontal treatments increases the risk of periodontitis recurrence and the need of periodontal surgery. This study evaluated the impact of tooth-related factors on the effectiveness of adjunctive photodynamic treatment (PDT) in the reduction of pockets > 5 mm during active periodontal treatment. METHODS: Thirty-six patients suffering from severe chronic periodontitis were evaluated in a 6-months split-mouth randomized clinical trial. Each quadrant was assigned to test (scaling and root planing (SRP) + PDT) or control (SRP alon

The 'ballista spring" system for impacted teeth.

The ballista spring system is a simplified orthodontic system for treating impacted teeth. The impacted tooth is retracted by a spring that accumulates a continuous force from being twisted on its long axis. The necessary operation on the impacted tooth is simple and less traumatic. The force exerted on the tooth is vertical, without compressing the impacted tooth toward the adjacent roots. This force is well controlled and easily modified. By the lack of appliance on the front teeth during a great part of the treatment, the esthetic side of the treatment is respected. Complicated impacted tee

Surgical resection after orthodontic eruption: A case report of compound odontoma-induced impacted maxillary right central incisor.

Herein, we described the multidisciplinary treatment of a mixed dentition patient with impacted maxillary right central incisor and adjacent compound odontoma. In contrast to conventional treatment procedures, orthodontic traction was first performed for the affected tooth in this case, followed by resection of the odontoma. The odontoma did not shift after eruption of the incisor and was safely removed after alignment of the impacted tooth. No root resorption, gingival recession or bone defect occurred in this case. These results demonstrated that the orthodontic force can break the connectio

Surgical orthodontic treatment of impacted teeth.

The authors demonstrate their clinical experience in the methodology developed by them for surgical-orthodontic treatment of impacted teeth. The material is based on 34 patients - 21 women and 13 men for the period 1994 - 1997. The patients were treated by the following methodology: after surgical exposure of the impacted tooth a photo-composite devise for tooth-alveolar traction is fixed to the crown part of the tooth by photopolymerization. The methodology is illustrated with a case of a patient treated for an impacted canine tooth.
