Effect of corticosteroids on orthodontic tooth movement in a rabbit model.

INTRODUCTION: While there are a growing number of studies on the effects of medications on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), only few studies have investigated the role of corticosteroids, despite their widespread use. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of triamcinolone acetonide injection on OTM in a rabbit model. STUDY DESIGN: Sixteen one-month old rabbits were randomly divided into two groups: Eight rabbits had triamcinolone acetonide (1 mg/kg/day) administered IM daily for 21 days (test group) while the remaining eight rabbits received no drug (control group). The ra

Expressions of interleukin-1β and interleukin-6 within aortas and uteri of rats with various severities of ligature-induced periodontitis.

To investigate the associations of periodontitis with histological lesions in some other organs, various severities of periodontitis were induced in rats by 3/0 silk ligatures tied around different numbers of their molar necks. Six weeks after the initial placement of ligatures, all rats were sacrificed by an anaesthetic overdose. The distances from the cemento-enamel junction to the alveolar bone crest within the placement zone of the ligature and their contralateral zone in groups L(2) and L(3) were measured. The levels of interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 in serum were assayed by enzyme-linked i

A Volume-Stable Collagen Matrix (VCMX) to Treat Single Gingival Recessions Associated with Partially Restored Noncarious Cervical Lesions: A Case Series.

Collagen matrices have been developed as possible connective tissue graft substitutes to overcome patient discomfort, undesired palatal healing, and the limited amount of donor tissue. The aim of this case series is to assess a coronally advanced flap (CAF) with a volume-stable collagen matrix (VCMX) to treat single gingival recessions (GRs) associated with partially restored noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs). Twelve patients diagnosed with single GRs (type 1; RT1) + NCCL (B+) were included in this study and received a restorative approach (partial composite resin with an apical marg

Extreme root resorption associated with induced tooth movement: a protocol for clinical management.

Cases in which teeth have only the cervical third remaining from orthodontically induced external root resorption, cast the following doubts: 1) What care should be taken to keep these teeth in mouth with the least risk possible? 2) What care should be taken with regards to reading of imaging exams, particularly in terms of accurately determining cervical root and bone loss? 3) Why is not endodontic treatment recommended in these cases? The present study aims at shedding light on the aforementioned topics so as to induce new insights into the theme.

Avoiding "the space" by the treatment of compromised teeth.

The advent of implant therapy has given new a dimension to dentistry particularly where teeth have been irretrievably damaged or pathologically involved. There are many situations however, where endodontic or combined therapy may effectively retain compromised teeth and clinicians should carefully evaluate evidence-based treatment. The main areas discussed are: transverse and crown root fractures and invasive cervical resorption. Transverse root fractures have an excellent natural healing capacity and will also respond favourably to treatment if pulp necrosis occurs in the coronal segment. Stu

Understanding root resorption with diagnostic imaging.

This article presents the clinical, radiographic and histopathologic features of various types of tooth root resorption. Tooth resorption may occur in a tooth internally or externally with distinctively different treatment approaches for each type of resorption. Given that proper diagnosis of the type of resorption is important, the use of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and conventional 2-D intraoral images in evaluation of resorptive lesions is discussed.

Soft tissue root coverage as treatment for cervical abrasion and caries.

Root exposure caused by gingival recession may result in cervical abrasion, root caries, root sensitivity, and compromised esthetics. Although cervical root lesions can be treated with Class V restorations, there may be advantages in treating them with soft tissue grafts for root coverage since they restore the dento-gingival unit to its prerecession condition. The rationale for root coverage with soft tissue grafts is reviewed and two cases are presented of successful root coverage procedures in which gingival recession associated with cervical abrasion and caries was present.

Invasive cervical resorption: etiology, diagnosis, classification and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) is not well understood by the professional, being misdiagnosed, leading to inappropriate treatment and unnecessary loss of tooth. INTRODUCTION: ICR is defined as a localized process of resorption, which begins in the cervical area of the tooth, just below the epithelial junction and above the ridge crest in the area of the connective tissue insertion. Possible predisposing factors include external trauma, orthodontic movement, surgical procedures, periodontal disease and its treatments, endogenous bleaching, pressure generated by wind instruments

Nonsurgical Management and 2-year Follow-up by means of Cone Beam Computed Tomography of an Invasive Cervical Resorption in a Molar.

BACKGROUND: Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) is a relatively uncommon form of external tooth resorption, characterized by an invasive nature. It is usually painless and detection of lesions is often made incidentally. Three-dimensional imaging techniques, such as cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), are useful in the diagnosis and management of ICR as the true extent of the defect cannot always be estimated using conventional radiographs. AIM: The aim of this article is to report on the successful treatment of ICR in mandibular first molar by nonsurgical approach and follow-up by means of
