An overview of tooth discoloration: extrinsic, intrinsic and internalized stains.

The causes of tooth discoloration are varied and complex but are usually classified as being either intrinsic, extrinsic or internalized in nature. Dietary chromogens and other external elements deposit on the tooth surface or within the pellicle layer either directly or indirectly to form extrinsic discoloration. Stains within the dentine or intrinsic discoloration often results from systemic or pulpal origin, while internalized stains are the result of extrinsic stains entering the dentine via tooth defects such as cracks on the tooth surface.

Enamel demineralization and bracket bond strength when etching with acid and /or Er:YAG laser.

BACKGROUND: Enamel etching for brackets is usually done with phosphoric acid. Er:YAG lasers have been recently used for this purpose with conflicting results. The effects of lasers on tooth demineralization and the effects of different combinations of laser treatments and bonding agents were evaluated in this study. METHODS: The enamel contents of fluorine, calcium oxide and phosphorus pentoxide (P(2) O(5)) were analysed using acid etching, laser treatment or both. The tensile bond strength of metallic and ceramic brackets using Transbond XT and Fuji Ortho LC were also tested, using acid etch

Influence of the orthodontic bonding procedure on biofilm formation.

INTRODUCTION: In orthodontics, white spot lesions are a persistent and widespread problem caused by the demineralization of buccal tooth surfaces around bonded brackets. The remaining adhesive around the brackets leads to surface roughness, which might contribute to demineralization. The present in vitro study aimed to compare a conventional and a modern adhesive system (APC Flash-Free technology) for orthodontic brackets with regard to the adhesion of Streptococcus sobrinus, a leading caries pathogen. METHODS: This in vitro study included 20 premolar teeth and compared 10 APC Flash-Free adhe

Oral manifestations of celiac disease.

INTRODUCTION: Contrary to early beliefs, celiac disease (CD) is relatively common; however, it still remains underdiagnosed since most cases are atypical, with few or no gastrointestinal symptoms and predominance of extraintestinal manifestations. As a consequence, the diagnosis of the disorder often requires a multidisciplinary approach. Also some oral ailments have been described in celiac patients. In this study, we review the papers that have reported oral manifestations in subjects with CD. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in Medline and Embase databases using app

Comparison of the effects of fluoride varnish containing silver nanoparticles and conventional fluoride varnish on the surface microhardness of tooth enamel.

BACKGROUND: Nano-silver fluoride (NSF) has been introduced to improve enamel lesions. The effective use of varnishes is important in the prevention of dental caries. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to compare the effect of conventional sodium fluoride varnish with the same varnish containing 1% and 2% silver nanoparticles (AgNP) on the surface microhardness of enamel. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The baseline surface microhardness of 40 premolar teeth was measured using a Vickers microhardness tester. After immersing the samples in a demineralizing agent for 24 h, the microhardness was measured again.

Comparative Evaluation of Remineralization Efficacy of a Novel Proanthocyanidin Biovarnish with Fluoride Varnish on Primary Teeth: An In Vitro Study.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Early dental caries are caused by subsurface demineralization of enamel and manifests 0.0015 as noncavitated, white lesions. Remineralization is a process that replaces lost mineral ions in demineralized enamel. Saliva naturally aids in remineralization. However, this process is slow and can be hampered under cariogenic conditions. Fluoride has been a significant caries-preventive agent, promoting remineralization, and preventing demineralization. However, interest in non-fluoridated treatments has increased due to concerns about dental fluorosis. Proanthocyanidins (PACs),

CHN nanocomposites and nanocoating resist enamel white spot lesions by enhancing remineralization and antibacterial activity.

Enamel white spot lesions (WSLs) are usually caused by the dissolution of minerals (mainly calcium and phosphate) on the tooth surface due to the acidic environment in the oral cavity. Without timely intervention, WSLs may lead to white spots or a sense of transparency on the tooth surface, and even the formation of dental caries (tooth decay) in severe cases. The key to preventing and treating WSLs is inhibiting the activity of acid-producing bacteria and promoting the remineralization of demineralized enamel. In this study, the network structure formed by sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) cross-

Acquired salivary pellicle and oral diseases: A literature review.

As soon as saliva contacts the teeth surface, salivary proteins adhere to the tooth surface to form acquired salivary pellicle. The formation of this acquired salivary pellicle is a dynamic and selective process of macromolecular adsorption and desorption. Although acquired salivary pellicle contains proteins and peptides, it also contains lipids, and other macro-molecules, all of which contribute to its protective properties. Acquired salivary pellicle is related to the development of common oral diseases, such as erosion, dental caries, and periodontal disease. Acquired salivary pellicle act

Comparative adsorption profiles of basal lamina proteome and gingival cells onto dental and titanium surfaces.

UNLABELLED: Titanium (Ti) dental implants are susceptible to bacterial infections and failure due to lack of proper epithelial seal. Epithelial cells establish a strong epithelial seal around natural teeth by the deposition of basal lamina (BL) proteins that adsorb on the tooth surface. This seal can even be re-established onto cementum or dentin following injury or periodontal therapy. However, it is unclear how tooth surfaces promote this cell attachment and protein adsorption. Understanding the interactions between BL proteins and epithelial cells with dentin and Ti will facilitate the deve

6-Shogaol promotes bone resorption and accelerates orthodontic tooth movement through the JNK-NFATc1 signaling axis.

INTRODUCTION: Corticotomy is widely used in clinical practice to accelerate tooth movement and shorten the duration of orthodontic treatment. It is effective, but an invasive surgery is needed to induce alveolar bone osteopenia that enable rapid tooth movement. In this study, we discovered the potential of 6-shogaol as a more patient-friendly non-invasive alternative to induce transient osteopenia and accelerate tooth movement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effects of 6-shogaol on the bone marrow macrophages (BMM) proliferation and osteoclast differentiation, and bone resorption were determined

Biochemical characterization of human gingival crevicular fluid during orthodontic tooth movement using Raman spectroscopy.

This study used Raman spectroscopy to report the first human gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) biochemical characterization during the early phase of orthodontic tooth movement. This technique allows for label-free and noninvasive biochemical change monitoring in GCF during orthodontic tooth movement. Ten orthodontic patients (20.8 ± 2.5 years) participated in the study. GCF samples were obtained before (baseline, 0 days) and during orthodontic treatment at 1, 7 and 28 days. For Raman spectroscopic measurement, GCF samples (5 µl) were deposited onto a gold-coated substrate, then dried at room te

Black Phosphorus Nanosheets-Loaded Mussel-Inspired Hydrogel with Wet Adhesion, Photothermal Antimicrobial, and In Situ Remineralization Capabilities for Caries Prevention.

The main features of early caries are the massive colonization of cariogenic bacteria and demineralization of tooth enamel by the acids that they produce. Owing to the lack of effective treatments, the development of anticaries therapeutics with both antimicrobial and remineralizing properties is urgently required. Black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNs) are ideal therapeutics for the treatment of early caries because they can mediate photothermal antibacterial activity and subsequently promote remineralization by generating PO4 3-. However, the dynamic and wet environment of the oral cavity preven

Dental white spots associated with bulimia nervosa in orthodontic patients.

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by consuming a large amount of food in a short amount of time followed by an attempt to rid oneself of the food consumed (purging), typically by vomiting, taking a laxative, diuretic, or stimulant, and/or excessive exercise, because of an extensive concern for body weight. The frequent contact between teeth and gastric acid, in particular, may cause: severe dental erosion, perimolysis, or the erosion of tooth enamel and swollen salivary glands. Constant vomiting can lead to gastroesophageal reflux. The aim of this article is to report two cas

Dentin remineralizing ability and enhanced antibacterial activity of strontium and hydroxyl ion co-releasing radiopaque hydroxyapatite cement.

Dental caries is an infection of the mineralized tooth structures that advances when acid secreted by bacterial action on dietary carbohydrates diffuses and dissolves the tooth mineral leading to demineralization. During treatment, clinicians often remove only the superficial infected tooth structures and retain a part of affected carious dentin to prevent excessive dentin loss and pulp exposure. Calcium hydroxide is used to treat the affected dentin because it is alkaline, induces pulp-dentin remineralization and decreases bacterial infection. Presence of strontium ions has also been reported
