The pulp plays a key role in the treatment of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) and is strongly associated with the outcome, particularly in severe cases. A correct pulp diagnosis is essential as it forms the basis for developing the appropriate management strategy. However, many TDIs are complex, and their treatment requires a profound knowledge of the physiological and pathological responses of the affected tissues. This comprehensive review will look at the dentine-pulp complex and its interaction with the surrounding tissues following TDIs. The literature up to 2020 was reviewed based on se

INTRODUCTION: The impact of tooth loss during adolescence, often a consequence of dental caries or traumatic injuries, extends beyond physical discomfort to significantly affect social interactions and self-esteem. Despite the established associations between poor oral health and various forms of social disadvantage, the potential for tooth loss to be associated with bullying victimization remains inadequately investigated.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the causal association between tooth loss and bullying victimization among adolescents, using longitudinal data from Australian

Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) are a public health concern that requires special attention in primary dentition due to the sequel that can be originated in permanent dentition. This paper aims to report a dental trauma injury highlighting the importance of follow-up the traumatized primary tooth until the eruption of its permanent successor. A 3-year-old female patient referred to a Dental Trauma Care Program (DTCP) in a Brazilian Public University after falling from her own height with the involvement of the deciduous maxillary left central incisor. The child's mother did not seek immediate

Although standard fixed appliances are better suited to control difficult tooth movement in three planes of space, clear aligner orthodontic treatment may be requested by patients because of the superior esthetics compared with conventional fixed appliances when clear aligners can be considered. Several clinical trials have shown improved periodontal status during orthodontic treatment with clear aligners while fixed appliances have almost always been associated with increased inflammation and mild periodontal breakdown despite preventive measures performed during treatment. There have been no

In six commercial pig farms, we compared the effects of two methods of tooth resection (tooth clipping with pliers and tooth grinding with a rotating grindstone) on teeth themselves, on skin lesions of piglets and of sow udders as well as on litter growth and survival. An intact group was included for control. Treatments were balanced within herds with sows assigned to one of the three experimental treatments. Observations were from 107 sows and their litters (n = 35 or 36 litters/group) at farrowing (day 0) and approximately 8, 15 and 27 days later. Tooth resection was done within 24 h of bir

The purpose of this study was to determine the occurrence and type of traumatic dental injuries after maxillofacial injuries as a result of Alpine skiing. During an 8-year period (from January 1991 to December 1998) 7600 patients with facial injuries were registered at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Innsbruck, Austria. Of 784 patients with skiing-related facial injuries (524 males, 260 females) 326 (41.6%) sustained injuries to 639 teeth. The age groups predominantly affected were between 7 and 32 years. Luxation injuries occurred in 338 (53%) teeth, fractures

This article addresses the incidence of specific complications and, where possible, offers a preventive or management strategy. Injuries of the inferior alveolar and lingual nerves are significant issues that are discussed separately in this text. Surgical removal of third molars is often associated with postoperative pain, swelling, and trismus. Factors thought to influence the incidence of complications after third molar removal include age, gender, medical history, oral contraceptives, presence of pericoronitis, poor oral hygiene, smoking, type of impaction, relationship of third molar to t

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognosis of subluxated, luxated and root fractured teeth in children treated by removable splints, designed to stabilize mobile anterior teeth and eliminate occlusal trauma due to malocclusion.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 227 traumatized anterior teeth (91 subluxated, 105 luxated and 31 root fractured teeth) treated with a removable splint were observed for 3 years. The traumatized teeth were from 79 children aged between 6-12 years (mean 8 years 5 months). If a traumatized tooth was extremely mobile, a fixed splint was first made before th

Various statistics have shown that avulsion (total displacement of tooth out of its socket) following traumatic injuries is relatively infrequent, ranging from 0.5 to 16% of traumatic injuries in the permanent dentition. The maxillary central incisors are the most frequently avulsed teeth. Avulsion of teeth occurs most often in children from 7 to 9 years of age, when the permanent incisors are erupting. Most frequently, avulsion involves a single tooth; but multiple avulsion are occasionally encountered. Fractures of the alveolar socket wall are often associate with avulsion. After the tooth i

Ectopic eruption originates from the malpositioning of a tooth bud ending in the eruption of the tooth in an improper direction. This anomaly is a consequence of ectopic development of the tooth germ. This condition gives rise to significant aesthetic and occlusal issues in the early mixed dentition stage. The most frequently influenced teeth are the maxillary first molars, accompanied by the maxillary cuspids. Ectopic eruption is seldom seen and might derive from traumatic injury. In some cases, hyperplastic and fibrotic gingival tissue may lead to ectopic eruption of a permanent incisor. Man

A 42-year-old man presented himself with a complaint of recurrent swelling of the chin. After clinical and radiographic examination, it was shown to be an injury caused by the use of an insufficiently disinfected mouthpiece when diving at an exotic destination. Oral injuries caused by diving mouthpieces are widely known. It is less well known that an untreated injury can ultimately lead to tooth loss.

Pulpal complications involving inflammation, degradation, and necrosis are the result of a series of traumatic injuries. The restorative dentist must minimize the trauma to dentin and pulp inflicted during clinical procedures, including that inflicted during tooth preparation. Part 11 of this series discusses the structural and physiologic changes in the pulp-dentin complex that result from crown and cavity preparation and the clinical implication of these changes.

Traumatic injuries to the primary dentition are critical events in dentistry not only due to the need for urgent care, but also since they have potential sequelae in the permanent dentition, with a prevalence ranging from 12% to 74%. The aim of this article was to provide an overview of the prevalence, etiology, and clinical and radiographic characteristics as well as the management of permanent teeth sequelae resulting from traumatic injuries to their deciduous predecessors. An extensive literature review was performed to reveal the current evidence on enamel discoloration with or without hyp

Traumatic intrusion injury of permanent teeth is serious with multiple complications possible associated with the pulp, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone and Hertwig's epithelial root sheath. The optimal treatment for the management of an intrusion injury has not yet been determined. A case is presented involving the conservative management of an immature maxillary permanent central incisor intrusively luxated by allowing for re-eruption and orthodontic extrusion two weeks later. After a follow-up period of ten months, the intruded tooth continued to show a mobility of grade one, without met

The aim of this prospective study was to determine in a population of pediatric patients with febrile convulsions the prevalence and pattern of orofacial and dental injuries caused by traditional remedies used in a suburban Nigerian community. Over the study period of 28 months, 75 cases of febrile convulsion presented to the Children's Emergency unit of our hospital. Of these, 27 children (36%) sustained orofacial injuries caused by forceful insertion of a spoon into the mouth (96.3%) or a bite (3.7%) during convulsive episodes. The ages of the patients ranged from 12 to 84 months with a mean

A case is presented of a 10-year-old girl, referred for consultation for failure of the maxillary central incisor to erupt. At 18 months, the patient underwent intrusion of the right central primary incisor, which re-erupted several months later. Radiographic examination revealed a complex odontoma-like malformation located next to the floor of the nose, away from the permanent incisors. Clinical examination revealed space loss of the corresponding permanent incisor and severe hypoplasia of the permanent right lateral incisor. Because of its deep location, it was decided not to remove the odon

The aim of the study was to analyze temporary disability cases among the patients suffering from maxillofacial diseases who were treated in dental medical centers over the 2007 to 2016 period. There were determined groups of incapacitating or disabling maxillofacial diseases among adults living in the Republic of Tatarstan: inflammatory (odontogenic and nonodontogenic), traumatic, benign and malignant neoplasms, secondary adentia as a result of tooth loss, as well as diseases associated with teeth eruption. The major part of temporary disability cases is due to odontogenic inflammatory maxillo

Dental and maxillofacial injuries represent an important but underrecognised component of trauma during episodes of violent crowd control. Blunt and projectile forces directed toward the head frequently result in tooth fractures, luxation and avulsion injuries, alveolar fractures, facial soft tissue trauma and temporomandibular joint involvement. Management is often complicated by delayed presentation, restricted access to care, overwhelmed facilities and communication blackouts. Using recent events in Iran as a contemporary clinical example, this commentary outlines injury mechanisms, clinica

BACKGROUND: Mandibular angle fractures are common and frequently involve a tooth in the fracture line. Despite trends toward more conservative indications for tooth extraction during open repair, the literature remains heterogeneous. This review aims to ascertain the effect of tooth extraction/retention on patient outcomes following mandible open reduction and internal fixation and to evaluate the evidence surrounding indications for extraction.
METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Elsevier text mining tool database, and clinicaltrials.gov were queried through March of 2018 for Engl
