The evolution of filter feeding in baleen whales (Mysticeti) facilitated a wide range of ecological diversity and extreme gigantism. The innovation of filter feeding evolved in a shift from a mineralized upper and lower dentition in stem mysticetes to keratinous baleen plates that hang only from the roof of the mouth in extant species, which are all edentulous as adults. While all extant mysticetes are born with a mandible lacking a specialized feeding structure (i.e., baleen), the bony surface retains small foramina with elongated sulci that often merge together in what has been termed the al

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal disease has been associated with tooth loss and reported as more prevalent among people with diabetes than among those without diabetes. Having an annual dental examination is a national goal of Healthy People 2010. Our objective was to examine whether an association exists between diabetes and tooth loss among a population reporting an annual dental visit.
METHODS: We used data from the 2004 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to examine the association between self-reported diabetes and tooth removal due to decay or periodontal disease among 155,280 responde

Most periodontal trials are based on the assumption that the superior treatment, as judged by short-term intangible changes in probing attachment levels (the surrogate), is also the treatment most likely to affect tooth mortality. This assumption is valid if: (1) the surrogate is informative about tooth mortality, and (2) the surrogate captures a substantial proportion of the treatment effect on tooth mortality (e.g., > 50% or 75%). The goal of this study was to evaluate whether both conditions were satisfied in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of elders at high risk for dental diseases. Th

The NHANES I Epidemiologic Follow-up Study (NHEFS) of 1982-84 collected longitudinal data from 10,523 individuals initially seen during the first National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES I) of 1971-75. Among this additional data was information on the incidence of total tooth loss during the 10 years between the surveys, which could then be added to NHANES I data to identify risk factors. In this analysis, a series of bivariate analyses were carried out, followed by logistic regression analysis to assess the simultaneous effect of major variables. Results showed that 7.4 percen

OBJECTIVES: Tooth loss is linked to cognitive impairment and cognitive decline in older adults. Whether tooth loss is associated with loss of brain structure is unknown, particularly with respect to white matter integrity, which is vulnerable to inflammation and vascular pathology.
METHODS: We examined the associations between clinically assessed tooth loss and subsequent changes in brain atrophy and microstructural integrity over an average follow-up of 4.8 (SD=3.6) years in 375 Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging participants (mean age=65.5 years, 53.6% women, average tooth loss: 3) using

OBJECTIVES: While regular periodontal care is advocated to reduce tooth loss considerably among periodontitis patients, evidence from observational studies is often limited to small single-center studies. This study aims to quantify the effect of periodontal care on tooth extractions among 40-year-old new periodontitis patients over 20 years.
METHODS: A nationwide register-based cohort study was conducted, encompassing 40-year-old individuals with incident periodontitis in 2001, tracked through Danish registers until the end of 2021. Receiving any periodontal care was determined annually, and

This study, for the first time, explores the integration of data science and machine learning for the classification and prediction of coronary artery calcium (CAC) scores. It focuses on tooth loss and patient characteristics as key input features to enhance the accuracy of classifying CAC scores into tertiles and predicting their values. Advanced analytical techniques were employed to assess the effectiveness of tooth loss and patient characteristics in the classification and prediction of CAC scores. The study utilized data science and machine learning methodologies to analyze the relationsh

BACKGROUND: Cerebrovascular diseases (CVAs) have several risk factors that are categorized as modifiable and nonmodifiable. Periodontal diseases (PD) have a modifiable role in causing CVA, where several studies suggested direct or indirect correlations with systemic diseases. This study aims to summarize, evaluate and analyze all the evidence available in literature, to reach a better understanding of the relation between periodontitis, gingivitis, tooth loss and CVA.
METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched for all meta-analyses assessing the effect of PD

BACKGROUND: Excess weight (EW), especially in women of childbearing age, those who are pregnant, as well as postpartum, is a problem worldwide. Fat accumulation deregulates the inflammatory response, contributing to the development of health problems, such as periodontitis. This study investigated the association between EW and periodontitis during pregnancy.
METHODS: A cross-sectional, multicenter study involved 1745 postpartum women in Brazil. Socioeconomic-demographic data, gestational history, lifestyle behavior, and general and oral health conditions were obtained. Pre-pregnancy body mas

Osteoporosis is a prevalent disease that is associated with increased hip fractures which cause significant decline in quality of life. Tooth loss affects systemic condition such as cognitive function through various mechanism, but the link between tooth loss and femoral bone mineral density is still uncertain. This study aims to investigate whether tooth loss in young mice affects memory function and femoral bone mineral density. Eight-week-old male C57BL/6 J mice were allocated randomly into the control group with sham operation and the tooth-loss group extracted all maxillary molar. Step-th

INTRODUCTION: It is known that cognitive impairment is linked to aging and neurobiological, psychological, and social factors. Recently, however, mastication and the number of teeth has also attracted attention, with a previous case control study reporting a correlation between the loss of teeth and Alzheimer's disease.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate possible relationships between cognitive function and various demographic variables, stress, medical history, and number of natural teeth in a specified female population.
MATERIALS & METHODS: A sample of the Saudi female population, 40-65 years of a

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this prospective study was to investigate whether poor oral health predicted 8-year cognitive function change in predominantly late middle adults in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study.
METHODS: Participants included a subset of ARIC participants aged 52-75 years at 1996-1998 from two study sites: Forsyth County NC and Jackson MS. All subjects completed cognitive function assessments both in 1996-1998 and 2004-2006, and the same subjects received a dental examination at the initial visit. Cognitive assessment consisted of delayed word recall (DWR), d

OBJECTIVES: Information on the significance of dental care in older adults is limited. We hypothesized that regular dental visits has an effect on the number of remaining teeth and periodontal conditions in older subjects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 1020 randomly selected individuals age 60 - 96 from the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care Blekinge received a comprehensive oral health examination.
RESULTS: Dentate women and men had, on average 18.4 teeth (SD +7.6,) and 18.9 teeth (SD + 7.5) respectively (NS). In the youngest group (60 and 66 years old) with less than one dental visit per ye

OBJECTIVE: Tooth loss impacts on general health and is a risk factor for malnutrition, disability, loss of self-sufficiency, and deterioration in quality of life. The present study was carried out to evaluate the prevalence of edentulism and its association with social and lifestyle factors in a population of elderly Italians.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Dental, social, and disease conditions were evaluated in a large community-based cohort (3054) of elderly subjects (> or =65 years) of both sexes in northern Italy. Logistic regression analyses with stepwise forward selection were performed to esti

In 186 children study casts were made at the age of 9, 11 and 13 years. The material was grouped according to early loss of primary molars and a comparison was made between children with and without early losses. Early loss was defined as follows: 1. extraction of the first primary molar between 7 1/2 and 9 1/2 years and/or extraction of the second primary molar between 7 1/2 and 10 1/2 years; 2. extraction of the first and/or second primary molar before 7 1/2 years of age. The following variables were studied: space conditions, dental stage for groups of teeth, eruption stage of single teeth.

BACKGROUND: Two independent meta-analyses-one of 18 cohort studies (n = 356,297) and one dose-response analysis of 14 longitudinal studies (n = 34,074)-demonstrate dose-dependent associations between tooth loss and dementia. The latter reported hazard ratio (HR) 1.48 (95% CI 1.18-1.87) for cognitive impairment and HR 1.28 (95% CI 1.09-1.49) for dementia; the former reported relative risk (RR) 1.20 and 1.15 for the same outcomes. The 2024 Lancet Commission expanded modifiable dementia risk factors to 14 yet omitted oral health. The mechanism remains unknown.
