The toothless (tl) rat is an osteopetrotic mutation characterized by a generalized skeletal sclerosis, reduced bone resorption, few osteoclasts and a total absence of erupted teeth. This mutation is not cured by bone marrow transplants from normal littermates. It is known that the skeletal defects in tl rats are greatly improved after treatment with colony-stimulating factor-1 (CSF-1). This investigation concerns the effects of CSF-1 on the development and eruption of the dentition of tl rats. Untreated tl rats had no erupted teeth by 56 days after birth, and the roots of incisors and molars w

BACKGROUND: Orthodontically induced root resorption (RR) is frequent, and invasive surgically accelerated orthodontic (ISAO) procedures may increase it. This study aimed to assess the effect of ISAO on RR in teeth adjacent to surgically treated segments compared with conventional orthodontic treatment.
METHODS: Following PRISMA, five major databases and four grey literature sources were searched through August 2025 without language or date restrictions. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials and comparative non-randomized intervention studies, including split-mouth designs, that r

To investigate the effect of photobiomodulation (PBM) on orthodontically induced root resorption (OIRR) while accelerating orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), and explore the possible role of periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) during this process. Thirty rats were randomly divided into 5 groups (A1-A5). The right upper first molars (UM1s) were assigned as PBM side (P), receiving different energy densities of PBM: A1-P (3.3 J/cm2); A2-P (5 J/cm2); A3-P (6.7 J/cm2); A4-P (8.3 J/cm2); A5-P (10 J/cm2). A diode laser (650 nm, 30 mW) with 0.09 cm2 beam area was used to irradiate right UM1s at th

Dental replantation is the treatment of choice for tooth avulsion; however, complications such as root canal obliteration, pulp necrosis and tooth resorption can arise, influenced by factors like extra-alveolar time and the storage medium in which the tooth was maintained. This case report discusses a seven-year-old child who experienced a traumatic avulsion of a permanent maxillary right central incisor with incomplete root formation. While the tooth was successfully replanted and both pulp vitality and complete root formation (apexogenesis) were initially maintained, the tooth later develope

BACKGROUND: The dental syndrome EOTRH is a painful, progressive dental disease with an unknown aetiology. The often painful nature of EOTRH emphasises the need for a better knowledge of the underlying pathogenic mechanism and risk factors. A comparative analysis of haematological, biochemical and endocrine values in EOTRH-affected and non-affected horses has not been described.
OBJECTIVES: To compare haematological, biochemical, and endocrine parameters in EOTRH-affected and non-affected horses to detect risk factors for horses developing EOTRH.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross sectional.
METHODS: Blood

BACKGROUND: In orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), pseudo-inflammatory processes occur that are similar to those of nicotine-induced periodontitis. Previous studies have shown that nicotine accelerates OTM, but induces periodontal bone loss and dental root resorption via synergistically increased osteoclastogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the role of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α) in nicotine-induced osteoclastogenesis during OTM.
MATERIALS/METHODS: Male Fischer-344 rats were treated with l-Nicotine (1.89 mg/kg/day s.c., N = 10) or NaCl solution (N = 10). After a week of pre

Tooth resorption (TR; progressive destruction of hard dental tissues) varies in prevalence according to population, age, and country (29-66.1%). Our objective was twofold: describing the TR clinical presentation in Northeastern Spain, and studying 34 blood parameters to ascertain potential systemic effects associated with TR. Cases (29; presented from September 2018 to May 2019) and controls (58) were considered. Non-parametric tests were carried out to compare cases and controls for each blood parameter; those showing significant differences were chosen for multiple regression analysis (binom

After tooth extraction, alveolar ridge loss due to resorption is almost inevitable. Most of this bone loss occurs during the first six months after the extraction procedure. Many studies have indicated that applying socket-filling biomaterials after extraction can effectively reduce the resorption rate of the alveolar ridge. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical efficacy of the application of a hydroxyapatite/β-tricalcium plus collagen (HA/β-TCP + collagen) dental bone graft in dental sockets immediately after tooth extraction, so as to prevent socket resorption. The study

Immature nonvital teeth can often be associated with periapical lesions. Presence of external inflammatory resorption can complicate the treatment plan. A 21-year-old female patient presented with a large periapical lesion in relation to teeth 11 and 12. Tooth 11 was an immature tooth undergoing external inflammatory resorption. Aspiration through the root canal was carried out to evacuate the purulent fluid in the periapical lesion. Triple antibiotic paste was then placed as an intracanal medicament for a period of 2 weeks, followed by calcium hydroxide therapy for a period of 2 months. Miner

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Red complex bacteria, i.e. Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola and Tannerella forsythia, are involved in the onset and progression of periodontal disease in man, yet seldom inhabit the oral cavity of healthy individuals. Periodontal disease is also encountered in horses, with equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) constituting a particular form of disease. However, only little is known about the oral microbiome of healthy and periodontitis-affected equids.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to test the hypothesis that red complex bacteria ar

INTRODUCTION: The effect of zoledronic acid, a potent and novel bisphosphonate, on tooth movement and orthodontically induced root resorption in osteoporotic animals systemically treated with zoledronic acid as similarly used in postmenopausal patients has not been elucidated. Therefore, this study was undertaken.
METHODS: Fifteen 10-week-old female Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups: ovariectomy, ovariectomy + zoledronic acid, and control. Only the ovariectomy and ovariectomy + zoledronic acid groups underwent ovariectomies. Two weeks after the ovariectomy, zoledronic acid was administer

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) on root resorption after delayed autotransplantation in dogs.
STUDY DESIGN: Mandibular second and third premolars of beagle dogs were extracted to create sites for autotransplantation. After 2 months, in the experimental sites the first and fourth mandibular premolars were extracted and air dried before autotransplantation with the application of recombinant FGF-2; the control sites received teeth without FGF-2. At 2, 4, or 8 weeks after surgery, the animals were killed and specimens coll

Root resorption is an unwanted effect of orthodontic tooth movement. Analysis of dentine proteins in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) is a potentially safer method of quantifying root resorption compared with conventional radiographic methods. This study aimed to identify and quantify the dentine-specific matrix protein, dentine sialoprotein (DSP), released into GCF during physiological root resorption and orthodontic tooth movement. GCF was collected using micropipettes from 50 second primary molar sites undergoing physiological root resorption in 9- to 14-year olds [coronal group (Rc) with ad

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of alveolar bone resorption on stress of tooth/implant-supported restoration connected by precision attachment using three-dimensional finite element(FEM) approach.
METHODS: The FEM was applied to analyze the stress distribution of tooth/implant-supported restoration connected by precision attachment under various loading conditions when the alveolar bone was absorbed to different level.
RESULTS: The stress values of the tooth, implant and their surrounding bone increased when their surrounding bone decreased by bone absorption.
CONCLUSION: The stress v

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) repair of a mandibular second-primary molar tooth with an inflammatory resorptive defect in the coronal third of the root canal is reported in this case. After the root canals were obturated with zinc oxide eugenol sealer, MTA was applied to the resorption cavity. The coronal cavity was then restored with a stainless steel crown. At an 18-month follow-up, the tooth was asymptomatic clinically and radiographically. According to this result, it can be concluded that MTA may be a suitable material for use in the treatment of internal resorption in the coronal thir

Clinical orthodontists frequently reactivate appliances following decay. Studies of tooth movement and tissue responses following reactivations indicate that linear tooth movement and rapid recruitment of osteoclasts can be achieved if reactivation is timed to coincide with the latter part of the bone remodeling cycle initiated by the first activation. Both can be delayed if reactivations are timed for the early part of the previous cycle. The objective of this study was to examine tooth movement, root resorption, and osteoclast recruitment following appliance reactivation after the first acti

External apical root resorption is a multifactorial problem encountered in all disciplines of dentistry, but it is most commonly seen in cases treated orthodontically. Specific tooth movements that are most likely to exacerbate external apical root resorption are poorly understood. Purpose of the present investigation was twofold: (1) to quantify apical and incisal movements of the maxillary central incisor in the sagittal and vertical planes from cephalograms and (2) to use stepwise multivariate linear regression analyses to see which tooth movements and skeletodental relationships are most p

Tooth resorption (TR) is a common and painful dental disease in cats. The contributions of skull type, diet, and chronic gingivostomatitis (CGS) to its development remain unclear. We retrospectively reviewed 166 cats with TR confirmed radiographically to evaluate these associations. Brachycephalic cats (N = 33) were significantly younger than non-brachycephalic cats (7.1 ± 2.6 vs. 8.7 ± 3.8 years, p = 0.026) and had a higher prevalence of advanced Stage 4 TR lesions (p = 0.018). There was no significant difference between two groups of cats in sex distribution, diet type or wet food consumptio
