Pseudomonas Reinfection in a Patient With Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia: How a Toothbrush Could Make You Sick.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by impaired mucociliary clearance, leading to recurrent respiratory tract infections, chronic rhinosinusitis, and progressive bronchiectasis. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common pathogen associated with poorer clinical outcomes in patients with PCD. While environmental sources of P. aeruginosa are well-documented in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, to our knowledge, this is the first reported case implicating toothbrush colonization as a likely source of recurrent P. aeruginosa infections in a patient with PCD.

Single vs Triple-Headed Toothbrushes in Children With Special Needs: A Randomised Crossover Trial of Brushing Efficacy.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Children with special needs (CSN) often struggle with effective toothbrushing, which is attributed to factors such as toothbrush type and visual-motor integration (VMI). This study aimed to compare the brushing efficacy of single-headed toothbrushes (SHT) vs triple-headed toothbrushes (THT) at varying VMI levels. METHODS: This single-blind, randomised controlled crossover study involved 46 CSN ranging in age from 6.1 to 12.0 years. Baseline plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), and VMI levels were measured. Participants were assigned a toothbrush type using block rand

Antimicrobial efficacy of disinfecting solutions against S. mutans on toothbrushes for school children in Uttar Pradesh, India.

Toothbrush bristles harbor pathogenic microorganisms like Streptococcus mutans, posing a continuous risk for reinfection and dental caries in children. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the ability of 5% neem, 5% green tea, 5% turmeric, 0.2% chlorhexidine (CHX) and tap water to disinfect Streptococcus mutans-contaminated toothbrushes after 12 hours of soaking. A randomized double-blind crossover study of 40 students (12-15 years) was conducted. All disinfectants significantly reduced bacterial counts compared to baseline, with the greatest reduction observed with 0.2% chlorhexidine, fol

Comparison of the Antimicrobial Effect of Hydrogen Water and Chlorhexidine Mouth rinse in Toothbrush Disinfection Among Dental Students.

BACKGROUND: Toothbrushes are essential for eliminating dental biofilm and preventing caries and periodontal disease. Regular disinfecting is necessary to maintain a clean toothbrush. Chlorhexidine is the gold standard, but it may be resistant to periodontal pathogens. Hydrogen-rich water, due to its antioxidant properties, may be beneficial against periodontal infections. METHOD: A study comparing hydrogen water and chlorhexidine as toothbrush disinfectants was conducted. Thirty dental students were divided into two groups: A and B. Group A students used hydrogen water and Group B used chlorh

Effects of 275 nm Ultraviolet Light-Emitting Diode Irradiation on Oral Bacteria In Vitro and Toothbrush Sanitization.

The oral cavity harbors a complex microbial community where pathogens implicated in dental caries and periodontitis can heavily colonize toothbrushes, transforming them into persistent sources of contamination that threaten both oral and systemic health. Consequently, this study evaluated the bactericidal efficacy of 275 nm ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED) irradiation against common oral bacteria in vitro and its practical utility for extraoral toothbrush sanitization. Suspensions of Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguinis, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Fusobacterium nucleatum w

Successful endoscopic retrieval of an accidentally ingested toothbrush in a 95-year-old male : a clinical case report.

BACKGROUND: Accidental foreign body ingestion in the paediatric age group is a common presentation to the Emergency department, with most objects being small and round. Accidental ingestion of non-organic, long, and rigid foreign bodies in adults is relatively rare, and is usually seen in patients with an underlying psychiatric illness. Such foreign bodies are unlikely to pass through the entirety of the gastrointestinal tract owing to their length and rigidity, and are therefore associated with the risk of pressure ulcers, necrosis, and perforation, which necessitates their prompt removal.
