BACKGROUND: A novel sodium fluoride toothpaste containing lactate ion and polyvinylmethylether-maleic anhydride has been developed to promote enamel remineralisation and resistance to demineralisation. In this in situ study, we compared this toothpaste ('Test') with a stannous fluoride-zinc citrate (SnF2-Zn) toothpaste ('Reference') (both 1100-1150 ppm fluoride) and a fluoride-free toothpaste ('Placebo') using an enamel dental erosion-rehardening model.
METHODS: In each phase of this randomised, investigator-blind, crossover study, participants wore palatal appliances holding bovine enamel sp

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There is a paucity of data in relation to the possible emergence of triclosan (TCS)-resistant bacteria following long-term exposure to TCS toothpaste. Therefore, this study investigated whether long-term continuous exposure to TCS in toothpaste selects for TCS-resistant bacteria within the oral biofilm.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Dental plaque samples were collected from 40 individuals during year 5 of a randomised controlled trial. Participants had been randomly assigned to use TCS (3000 μg/mL TCS) (n = 18) or placebo toothpaste (n = 22). Diluted plaque samples were plat

The interaction between stannous-containing dentifrice slurry and experimentally formed pellicles was investigated on enamel and root dentin using an erosion-remineralization-abrasion cycling model. The remineralizing solutions contained no proteins (negative control), mucin, casein, mucin + casein or albumin, for experimental pellicle formation. Toothbrushing was performed with fluoride toothpaste, with (TP + Sn) and without (TP) 3,500 ppm Sn. TP + Sn reduced surface loss for both enamel and root dentin (p < 0.05). The association between TP + Sn and albumin resulted in a significantly lower

A 17-year-old female patient presented with unusual enlargement of the gingiva with generalized alveolar bone loss. In spite of periodontal therapy, including plaque control, scaling, root planning and surgical treatment, recurrence with the same degree of the gingival enlargement and further loss of attachment level occurred. Biopsy revealed dense infiltration of normal plasma cells separated by collagenous stroma. Discontinuation of herbal toothpaste resulted in remarkable remission of the gingival enlargement within 2 weeks. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of toothpaste components disclos

New dual-phase fluoride toothpastes that contain soluble calcium, phosphate, and baking soda have recently been introduced into the market. These toothpastes are designed to fill in small surface defects in tooth enamel and thereby enhance tooth esthetics such as gloss. This two-part study was designed to assess these superficial mineralizing effects from using one of these products compared with an experimental calcium-containing, bicarbonate-free formulation and a conventional fluoride toothpaste using an intraoral model. Enamel specimens with 4 types of defects were mounted into an intraora

Superficial mucoceles are small, clear vesicles that occur on clinically non-inflamed mucosa and are often misdiagnosed as vesiculobullous disorders. Soft palate, retromolar pads, and posterior buccal mucosa are common sites of involvement. The lesions are more common in women than in men and need no treatment. This paper describes a 71-year-old female who demonstrated some of the pitfalls in diagnosis and a possible contributory role of a tartar-control toothpaste in the onset of the lesions.

This study evaluated the chemical profile of toothpastes (TPs) and mouthrinses (MRs) and their effects on tooth enamel ultrastructure, and the viability of human dental pulp fibroblasts (hDPF). Four TPs and MRs containing different remineralizing agents (arginine, potassium nitrate, pro arginine, and stannous chloride) were analyzed for pH, titratable acidity (TA), and ion concentrations (Ca+2, K+, Na+2). Enamel ultrastructure was evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cell viability was assessed after treatments exposure. TPs and

In-vitro studies commonly simulate toothbrushing using toothpaste slurries of defined dilution levels. However, a recent in-vivo study indicated dilution levels in patients likely to be higher than those typically used. Therefore, this in-vitro study investigated the effects of toothpastes with different relative abrasivity and different dilution on the abrasive wear of enamel and dentin. 144 bovine enamel and dentin samples were randomly assigned to 12 groups each (n = 12). Samples were brushed according to a standardized protocol with three toothpastes of different relative abrasivity on ena

OBJECTIVES: Anhydrous toothpastes containing 5% calcium-sodium phosphosilicate (CSPS) have well-established long-term efficacy against dentine hypersensitivity (DH). However, short-term efficacy is not well-characterised. This study investigated the degree of DH reduction over 3-56 days' twice-daily brushing with a 5% CSPS toothpaste and also explored user-reported impact on oral health-related quality-of-life (OHRQoL), via a DH Experience Questionnaire (DHEQ-48).
METHODS: This single-centre, 8-week, randomized, controlled, examiner-blind, 2 treatment-arm, stratified, parallel-design clinical

Oral diseases such as dental caries are highly prevalent and are strongly associated with microbial biofilms and oxidative stress. This study investigated the green synthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ nanoparticles) using cyanobacterial phycobiliproteins, including phycocyanin (PC) and phycoerythrin (PE), extracted from Trichormus sp. 121B and Desmonostoc alborizicum. Spectrophotometric analysis confirmed nanoparticle formation, while Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis indicated the presence of organic functional groups derived from cyanobacterial pigments. Background/Objectives: Toothpastes have recently been developed with purposes ranging from strengthening teeth and restoring periodontal tissue to removing stains and alleviating tooth sensitivity. Although the individual effects of each component are well understood, their interactions with each other remain unclear. Methods: The oral fluoride concentration following the use of dentifrices with different abrasive contents was evaluated in seven healthy adults. In addition, in in vitro apatite pellet experiments, fluoride concentration from the pellets was compared after the use of dentifrices

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic esophagitis is associated with epithelial barrier dysfunction. Epidemiologic studies suggest environmental factors promote disease pathogenesis. The common household detergent sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) induces epithelial barrier dysfunction and eosinophilic inflammation in mice. We hypothesized that acute SDS exposure would compromise the esophageal mucosal barrier in humans.
METHODS: Healthy adults brushed with 2 g of an SDS-containing toothpaste. Esophageal impedance was measured continuously pre-/post-toothbrushing to assess the effect of toothpaste on epithelia

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries is a multifactorial disease primarily driven by an imbalanced oral microbiome, with cariogenic bacteria in dental plaque playing a central role. Fluoride-containing toothpaste is commonly used for caries prevention, but its effects on the oral microbiome, particularly at different fluoride concentrations, remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the short-term impact of fluoride toothpaste with different fluoride concentrations (standard fluoride 1000 ppm, low fluoride 500 ppm, and non-fluoride) on the oral microbial community in preschool children.
METHODS: A tota
