Deficit in intersegmental torques drives post-stroke stiff-knee gait.

Walking, a seemingly simple task for many, becomes a challenge for people after a stroke. Typically, the swinging leg kinematics is fine-tuned to provide toe clearance, but reduced knee flexion after stroke requires adaptive gait strategies, such as hip hiking and circumduction, to prevent stumbling. The cause of reduced knee flexion in a dynamic system is unintuitive and often obscured by muscle weakness, hyperactivity, or abnormal joint coordination. Using physical models, we predicted that intersegmental forces may be largely responsible for the deficits. Leveraging subject-specific inverse

Manipulation of the Topological Ferromagnetic State in a Weyl Semimetal by Spin-Orbit Torque.

Magnetic Weyl semimetals (MWSMs) exhibit unconventional transport phenomena, such as large anomalous Hall (and Nernst) effects, which are absent in spatial inversion asymmetry WSMs. Compared with its nonmagnetic counterpart, the magnetic state of a MWSM provides an alternative way for the modulation of topology. Spin-orbit torque (SOT), as an effective means of electrically controlling the magnetic states of ferromagnets, may be used to manipulate the topological magnetic states of MWSMs. Here we confirm the MWSM state of high-quality Co2MnGa film by systematically investigating the transport

Rate of torque development and striatal shape in individuals with prodromal Huntington's disease.

The aim of the present study was to quantify explosive joint torque or the ability to develop joint torque rapidly, typically measured as the rate of torque development, in individuals with prodromal Huntington's disease and healthy controls and its associations with measures of disease burden and striatal pathology. Twenty prodromal Huntington's disease and 19 healthy control individuals volunteered for this study. Plantar flexor isometric rate of torque development values were evaluated using isokinetic dynamometry. Pathological changes in striatal shape were evaluated using magnetic resonan

Aseptic meningitis caused by torque teno virus in an infant: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Torque teno virus-induced aseptic meningitis has not been documented, although torque teno virus infections still remain under consideration for etiological agents. This study identified a torque teno virus sequence using next generation sequencing and immunoglobulin M response to the torque teno virus antigen, therefore, that would be a comprehensive diagnosis for torque teno virus infection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-month-old Japanese boy was brought to our hospital because he was irritable, drowsy, and lethargic. He was admitted based on his test results which indicated the possi

Comparison of vibrotactile and joint-torque feedback in a myoelectric upper-limb prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: Despite the technological advancements in myoelectric prostheses, body-powered prostheses remain a popular choice for amputees, in part due to the natural sensory advantage they provide. Research on haptic feedback in myoelectric prostheses has delivered mixed results. Furthermore, there is limited research comparing various haptic feedback modalities in myoelectric prostheses. In this paper, we present a comparison of the feedback intrinsically present in body-powered prostheses (joint-torque feedback) to a commonly proposed feedback modality for myoelectric prostheses (vibrotacti

Acoustic radiation torque on an irregularly shaped scatterer in an arbitrary sound field.

To eliminate the limitation of the conventional acoustic radiation torque theory, which is only applicable to a disklike scatterer in a plane sound field, a new theory is established to calculate the radiation torque on any irregularly shaped scatterer in any arbitrary sound field. First, with the aid of the conservation law of angular momentum, the acoustic radiation torque is expressed as the angular momentum flux through a spherical surface with the center at the scatterer's centroid. Second, the velocity potential of the scattered field is derived, taking into account the influences of the

Decreased torque and electromyographic activity in the extensor thigh muscles in chondromalacia patellae.

The alterations in thigh muscle properties of chondromalacia patellae patients during isometric and dynamic endurance tests were studied using a variokinetic knee testing system linked to surface EMG. A total of 41 patients (chondromalacia group) with arthroscopically certified chondromalacia of the patella were studied. The control group consisted of 31 healthy adult volunteers with no history of knee pain or trauma. Peak torque values were 21% (p < 0.01) and force output values 25% (p < 0.05) lower on the symptomatic side of the chondromalacia group than in the control group. The decrease in

Isokinetic torque imbalances in the rotator cuff of the elite water polo player.

The specific repetitive activity of water polo, like baseball pitching, emphasizes adduction and internal rotation. This study used the Cybex II to evaluate the isokinetic strength of the rotator cuff in elite water polo players and in a group of control subjects. The water polo players were significantly stronger than the controls. Of greater importance was the confirmation of imbalances in the rotator cuff force couples of adduction/abduction and external/internal rotation. These changes are similar to those reported for pitchers. The adductors in the water polo group had gained in relative

The relation between pain and torque in an isokinetic strength test of knee extension.

Twenty-five patients (20 +/- 3 years) with patella tendinitis were followed over an 8-week period in order to study the relation between quadriceps muscle torque, in a Cybex test, and knee pain on exertion. Each patient was examined on three occasions; at 0, 4, and 8 weeks. During the first 5 weeks the patient was put through a treatment program with initial rest, activity modification, and local injection of betamethasone or Arteparon. Half of the patients improved, with less pain and higher torque, and the rest experienced no change. There was a significant negative correlation between pain

Hook stiffness as a mechanical switch for torque regulation in the bacterial flagellar motor.

The bacterial flagellar motor drives cell motility by rotating the flagellar filament and converting ion flux into mechanical work. At low counterclockwise (CCW) rotational speeds, the motor operates near the thermodynamic reversible limit, where torque remains nearly constant against rotation speed for an extended range. Earlier models based on thermodynamic reversibility predict qualitatively similar behavior in the clockwise (CW) direction, regardless of the underlying mechanism of torque generation. Structural studies further support this symmetry by showing that the torque-generation mach

Strong Damping-Like Torques in Wafer-Scale MoTe2 Grown by MOCVD.

The scalable synthesis of materials with strong spin orbit coupling (SOC) is crucial for the development of spintronic and magnetic devices. Here, wafer-scale growth of 1T' MoTe2 using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) at low temperatures (400 °C) is demonstrated. The synthesized films exhibit uniform coverage across the entire substrate, as well as accurate stoichiometry. This low-temperature synthesis is compatible with silicon back-end-of-line (BEOL) processes, enabling in-memory and in-sensor computing for data-intensive applications. Furthermore, it was found that the grown

Detection of Torque Teno Sus Virus1 by an RNA in situ hybridization assay.

Torque Teno viruses (TTVs) are ubiquitous, small DNA viruses which are highly epidemiologically associated with respiratory infections, hepatitis, neurological disease and autoimmune disorders in humans and animals. Swine TTVs (TTSuVs) can be considered opportunistic pathogens as they exacerbate clinical signs due to coinfecting agents. While further understanding of how TTVs contribute to disease is crucial, there is a notable lack of animal models and tools to study the in vivo infection patterns of TTV. RNA in situ hybridization (RNA-ISH) with multiple probe amplification has recently gaine

A Novel Ungrounded Haptic Device for Generation and Orientation of Force and Torque Feedbacks.

To provide deeper immersion for the user in the virtual environments, both force and torque feedbacks are required rather than the mere use of visual and auditory ones. In this paper, we develop a novel propeller-based Ungrounded Handheld Haptic Device (UHHD) that delivers both force and torque feedbacks in one device to help the user experience a realistic sensation of immersion in a three-dimensional (3-D) space. The proposed UHHD uses only a pair of propellers and a set of sliders to continuously generate the desired force and torque feedbacks up to 15N and 1N.m in magnitude in less than 37

Association of the rate of torque development and joint angle with passive muscle stiffness.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to statistically compare the rate of torque development normalized by maximal strength (relative RTD) across ankle angles. Additionally, this study was aimed at exploring the correlation coefficients between relative RTD and passive stiffness of the medial gastrocnemius (MG) at different ankle angles. METHODS: Twenty-two healthy men and women (age: 31 ± 4 years) performed randomly-ordered explosive isometric plantar flexions at plantarflexed (15°), neutral (0°), and dorsiflexed (- 15°) angles; relative RTD comprised the slope of the time-torque curve nor

Spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques in the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.

Dynamic simulations of spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques are increasingly important for a wide range of spintronic devices including magnetic random access memory, spin-torque nano-oscillators and electrical switching of antiferromagnets. Here we present a computationally efficient method for the implementation of spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques within the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation used in micromagnetic and atomistic simulations. We consolidate and simplify the varying terminology of different kinds of torques into a physical action and physical origin that clearly shows the com

Estimation of Maximum Shoulder and Elbow Joint Torques Based on Demographics and Anthropometrics.

Repetitive movements that involve a significant shift of the body's center of mass can lead to shoulder and elbow fatigue, which are linked to injury and musculoskeletal disorders if not addressed in time. Research has been conducted on the joint torque individuals can produce, a quantity that indicates the ability of the person to carry out such repetitive movements. Most of the studies surround gait analysis, rehabilitation, the assessment of athletic performance, and robotics. The aim of this study is to develop a model that estimates the maximum shoulder and elbow joint torque an individua

Torque teno virus in liver diseases: On the way towards unity of view.

The review presents the data accumulated for more than 20 years of research of torque teno virus (TTV). Its molecular genetic structure, immunobiology, epidemiology, diagnostic methods, possible replication sites, and pathogenicity factors are described. TTV is a virus that is frequently detectable in patients with different viral hepatitides, in cases of hepatitis without an obvious viral agent, as well as in a healthy population. There is evidence suggesting that biochemical and histological changes occur in liver tissue and bile duct epithelium in TTV monoinfection. There are sufficient his
