Executive dysfunction as a risk marker for substance abuse: the role of impulsive personality traits.

The relationships between family history of substance use, executive functions, impaired decision making, and current substance dependence are the focus of this study. Thirty-eight substance-dependent inpatients were compared with 30 community controls on performance on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Trail-Making Test-B, the Stroop Color Word Test, the Wais-II Digit Span, and the Iowa Gambling Task. Recent alcohol use, depressive symptoms, and impulsivity were also assessed. As hypothesized, individuals with substance dependence exhibited poorer executive functioning. Family history status w

DNA Hypomethylation in Blood Links B3GALT4 and ZADH2 to Alzheimer's Disease.

Differentially methylated positions (DMPs) between persons with and without late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) were observed at 477 of 769,190 loci in a plurality of genes. Of these, 17 were shared with DMPs identified using clinical LOAD markers analyzed independently as continuous variables comprising Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test scores, cerebrospinal fluid total tau (t-tau) and phosphorylated tau 181 (p-tau181) levels, and t-tau/Aβ1-42 (Aβ42), p-tau181/Aβ42, and Aβ42/Aβ1-40 (Aβ40) ratios. In patients with LOAD, 12 of the shared 17 DMPs were hypomethylated in B3GALT4 (Beta-1,3-galatc

Alphanumeric sequencing and cognitive impairment among elderly persons.

Alphanumeric Sequencing involves the alternating recitation of counting and the alphabet. We report data on the use of this measure among 112 VA patients ranging in age from 61 to 100 years who were administered the Alphanumeric Sequencing, Trail Making Test, Digits Forward and Backward, the Mini-Mental State Examination, and the Behavioral Dyscontrol Scale. Persons who obtained scores < 27 on the Mini-Mental State Examination or < 14 on the Behavioral Dyscontrol Scale performed significantly more poorly than those who scored higher. Both the time and errors were correlated (.11 to -.49) with

Executive function deficits in patients with the first episode of late-life depression before and after SSRI treatment: A pilot fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Executive function deficits (EFD) in late-life depression (LLD) has been reported to be associated with antidepressant treatment resistance, increased disability, and poor quality of life. However, the underlying neutral mechanisms of EFD in patients with the first episode of LLD remains unclear. METHODS: A total of 27 patients with first-episode, drug-naive LLD and 27 non-depressed controls (NC) were recruited for the present research. Participants underwent the Trail Making Test, the 17-item Hamilton depression rating scale (HAMD-17) test, and task-state functional magnetic reso

Structural and cognitive correlates of fatigue in progressive multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue in multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating symptom and experienced by most patients. In recent studies investigating this phenomenon, the majority of patients had a relapsing-remitting disease course. METHODS: Patients with progressive MS participating in one of three treatment trials during a period from 2010 to 2014 were included. Fatigue was assessed with the Fatigue Scale for Motor and Cognitive Functions (FSMC) and patients were further examined with a cognitive test battery, including Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), and 3 T MRI with subsequent quantitative ana

Neuropsychological functioning of opiate-dependent patients: a nonrandomized comparison of patients preferring either buprenorphine or methadone maintenance treatment.

OBJECTIVES: In the present study, we investigated whether buprenorphine as a partial mu-opioid receptor agonist is associated with less cognitive impairment than methadone. METHODS: Neuropsychological functioning of opioid-dependent patients, previously assigned to methadone (MMP, n = 30) or buprenorphine (BMP, n = 26) maintenance treatment according to their own preference, was compared and dose effects were investigated. RESULTS: MMP and BMP performed equally well on all measures of neuropsychological functioning including the trail making test, the continuous performance test, and a vigil

Quantifying cognitive dysfunction across the spectrum of end-stage kidney disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Cognitive dysfunction is reportedly highly prevalent among chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. A variety of screening tools and neuropsychiatric batteries are used to quantify the magnitude and nature of this dysfunction. Our objective is to summarize the neurocognitive testing used, and determine what degree cognitive dysfunction is reported in CKD patients. All study designs published in English that contained participants who were either pre-dialysis patients, haemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients or renal transplant recipients were considered. Reported comparative non-

Neuropsychological Profile of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: A Systematic Review of Cognitive Trajectories and Evidence-Based Assessment Tools for Surgical Management.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a key yet understudied component of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Although gait and radiological markers are routinely assessed, neuropsychological outcomes remain inconsistently reported, and no standardized cognitive battery exists for evaluating patients before and after cerebrospinal fluid shunt. This systematic review synthesizes available evidence on the cognitive trajectories of adults with NPH and identifies the neuropsychological tests that are most sensitive and clinically informative for monitoring outcomes following ventriculo-peritoneal a

The relationship between moderate to vigorous physical activity and cognitive rigidity in anorexia nervosa.

A drive for physical activity despite underweight is a core feature of anorexia nervosa. This pilot study detects which aspect of physical activity, if any, could be related to cognitive rigidity in anorexia nervosa. Twenty-eight outpatients with anorexia nervosa and 24 healthy participants were assessed for cognitive flexibility with the Trail Making Test (TMT) and for multiple dimensions of physical activity by subjective and objective assessments. Correlation analysis was conducted to disentangle the relationship between cognitive rigidity and the different aspects of physical activity, the

Personality, clinical features, and test instructions can affect executive functions in Eating Disorders.

Cognitive deficits in Eating Disorders have been related to the executive function domain. Yet, to date, only few works investigated the relationship between neuropsychological and clinical issues, and these studies were separately conducted either on Anorexia Nervosa (AN) or Bulimia Nervosa (BN). In this study, three groups of AN, BN and matched controls were administered the Trail Making Test, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, and the Hayling Sentence Completion Test, in addition to personality and clinical assessments (Temperament and Character Inventory, SCL-90-R, EDI-2). Results from AN in

Test-Retest Reliability of Ankle Mobility, Balance, and Jump Tests in Amateur Trail Running Athletes.

This study aimed to test the reliability of seven functional performance tests in amateur trail runners, including ankle mobility, balance, hopping, and countermovement jump (CMJ) tests. The sample consisted of 35 runners who were evaluated in two sessions separated by 7 to 14 days, which varied due to participants' scheduling constraints. Relative reliability was assessed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC, which indicates consistency between repeated measures), the Standard Error of Measurement (SEM, which reflects measurement precision), and the Minimal Detectable Change (MDC

Oral contraceptive treatment improves cognitive performance in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) patients.

PURPOSE: Oral contraceptives (OCs) are commonly used for the treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). However, the therapeutic effects of OCs on cognitive function have not been explored extensively. This study aimed to determine the changes in cognitive function in PCOS patients treated with three cycles of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) containing estrogen and progesterone. METHODS: Drug-naive PCOS patients (N = 35), aged 18-35 years, were evaluated at baseline and three months after treatment with COC containing levonorgestrel (0.15 mg) plus ethinyl estradiol (30 µg). Assessing Gluten-Induced Brain Fog in a Non-celiac Patient: A Case Report.

While gluten-induced brain fog is frequently reported in individuals with celiac disease, it is uncertain whether people without classic gastrointestinal symptoms of celiac may also experience similar gluten-related cognitive issues. These types of subjective complaints are difficult to quantify in clinical practice, but electroencephalography (EEG) with event-related potentials (ERPs) can be useful in identifying cognitive disturbances. The case we present here is of a 28-year-old male who reported mild cognitive symptoms associated with gluten exposure, not previously objectively evaluated.

The neural correlates of cognitive dysfunction in phantom sounds.

Tinnitus is an auditory phantom percept with a tone, hissing or buzzing sound in the absence of an objective physical sound source. It has been shown that tinnitus can lead to emotional and cognitive impairment and people with tinnitus perform worse than a control group on different cognitive tasks. The hippocampus is known to play an important role in cognitive performance, and also in the pathophysiology of tinnitus. Hippocampal deficits have been described in animal models of tinnitus and in tinnitus patients a decrease in grey matter in the hippocampus has been demonstrated. Nineteen patie

Corpus callosum atrophy is associated with mental slowing and executive deficits in subjects with age-related white matter hyperintensities: the LADIS Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has indicated that corpus callosum atrophy is associated with global cognitive decline in neurodegenerative diseases, but few studies have investigated specific cognitive functions. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of regional corpus callosum atrophy in mental speed, attention and executive functions in subjects with age-related white matter hyperintensities (WMH). METHODS: In the Leukoaraiosis and Disability Study, 567 subjects with age-related WMH were examined with a detailed neuropsychological assessment and quantitative magnetic resonance imaging. The rel

Driving performance and susceptibility to simulator sickness: are they related?

We examined whether participants who failed to complete a simulated drive because of simulator sickness (dropouts) differed from those who completed the simulation (completers). Thirteen healthy older adult dropouts (mean age = 74.8 yr) and 12 comparable completers were compared on the following variables: on-road driving performance, the Useful Field of View test, the Attention Network Test, and the Trail Making Test Part A. Results showed that completers scored more demerit points during the on-road drive than did dropouts. In addition, only 1 of 13 comparisons based on participants' cogniti

Safety, tolerability, and efficacy of PBT2 in Huntington's disease: a phase 2, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: PBT2 is a metal protein-attenuating compound that might reduce metal-induced aggregation of mutant huntingtin and has prolonged survival in a mouse model of Huntington's disease. We aimed to assess the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of PBT2 in patients with Huntington's disease. METHODS: In this 26-week, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, adults (≥25 years old) with early-stage to mid-stage Huntington's disease were randomly assigned (1:1:1) by a centralised interactive response system to once daily PBT2 250 mg, PBT2 100 mg, or placebo. Peripheral Hearing and Cognition: Evidence From the Staying Keen in Later Life (SKILL) Study.

OBJECTIVES: Research has increasingly suggested a consistent relationship between peripheral hearing and selected measures of cognition in older adults. However, other studies yield conflicting findings. The primary purpose of the present study was to further elucidate the relationship between peripheral hearing and three domains of cognition and one measure of global cognitive status. It was hypothesized that peripheral hearing loss would be significantly associated with poorer performance across measures of cognition, even after adjusting for documented risk factors. No study to date has exa
