Food-borne parasitic infections--old stories and new facts.

A review is presented of food-borne parasitic infections. Parasitic infections with public health hazards both from conventional slaughter animals and from seafood (fish and shellfish) are discussed. The former category includes cysticercosis, echinococcosis, and trichinosis, the latter category covers various trematode, cestode, nematode, and possibly also protozoan infections. Examples of trematode infections are heterophyidiasis, transmitted to man by marine fish, and Paragonimus spp parasites, transmitted by crustaceans. Cestode infections include diphyllobothriasis transmitted by both fre

Morphological and molecular identification of trematode cercariae related with humans and animal health in freshwater snails from a lake and a dam in Myanmar.

Freshwater snails play an essential role in the transmission of trematode parasitic flatworms that can infect wild and domestic animals, as well as humans. This study aimed to investigate the rate of cercarial infections in freshwater snails collected from two study areas, Inlay Lake and Yezin Dam, in Myanmar. A total of 4,740 snail samples were collected from Inlay Lake (n = 3,837) and Yezin Dam (n = 903), and infection rate by cercarial emergence was examined. Cercarial DNA samples were analysed by PCR. Based on morphological characteristics, eleven snail species and eight cercarial types we

Characterization of the Life Cycle of a Fish Eye Fluke, Austrodiplostomum ostrowskiae (Digenea: Diplostomidae), with Notes on Two Other Diplostomids Infecting Biomphalaria havanensis (Mollusca: Planorbidae) from Catfish Aquaculture Ponds in Mississippi, USA.

Ocular diplostomiasis is caused by trematode species in the family Diplostomidae, specifically those in the genera Austrodiplostomum, Diplostomum, and Tylodelphys. Diplostomid trematodes are globally distributed parasites of fish. Heavy infections of diplostomids that parasitize the eyes of fish can result in acute mortality while chronic infections are often characterized by impaired vision or blindness. In the southeastern United States, commercial catfish production is threatened by piscivorous birds and the many trematode species that parasitize them. The life cycles typically involve a pi

Save your host, save yourself? Caste-ratio adjustment in a parasite with division of labor and snail host survival following shell damage.

Shell damage and parasitic infections are frequent in gastropods, influencing key snail host life-history traits such as survival, growth, and reproduction. However, their interactions and potential effects on hosts and parasites have never been tested. Host-parasite interactions are particularly interesting in the context of the recently discovered division of labor in trematodes infecting marine snails. Some species have colonies consisting of two different castes present at varying ratios; reproductive members and nonreproductive soldiers specialized in defending the colony. We assessed sna

Prevalence of fish-borne trematodes of the family Heterophyidae at Pasak Cholasid Reservoir, Thailand.

The prevalence of fish-borne trematodes was investigated in various species of freshwater fish at Pasak Cholasid Reservoir in Thailand. The samples were collected from fish markets around the reservoir between June 2011 and May 2012. A total of 789 fish samples were classified into 25 species. The metacercariae (i.e., the larval stage of trematodes) were examined from 4 parts of the fish body, and evaluated using the compression method. Ten species from two families of the fish collected were found to have trematodes of various infection rates. Among the Cyprinidae there were 9 species: Barbon

Opisthorchis felineus and Metorchis bilis are the main agents of liver fluke infection of humans in Russia.

Liver fluke infections are gradually transforming from a local problem of individual geographic regions to a widespread problem. The observed expansion is likely to be connected with the ever-increasing intensity of traffic flow and migration of the infected carriers between cities, regions, and countries. Opisthorchis felineus, the trematode belonging to the family Opisthorchiidae, is a well known causative agent of the infection called opisthorchiasis. Metorchis bilis, also a member of the family Opisthorchiidae, causes metorchiasis, a disease very close to opisthorchiasis in symptomatology.

Impacts of artificial light at night on interactions between four trematode parasites and their marine invertebrate hosts: species-specific effects?

Parasitism is influenced by anthropogenic stressors, among which artificial light at night (ALAN) remains understudied. With the expansion of urban areas and the development of lighting technology, the range and intensity of ALAN's effects on host-parasite interactions are increasing. Trematodes, with their complex life cycles, are particularly sensitive to anthropogenic stressors, especially during the transmission of motile cercariae (infective stages) from the first to the second intermediate host while exposed to external conditions. We examined how three types of ALAN (warm white LED, col

Assessment of anthelmintic effectiveness to control Fasciola hepatica and paramphistome mixed infection in cattle in the humid tropics of Mexico.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the main anthelmintics used for the control of trematodes in cattle in an endemic area in the humid Mexican tropics. A diagnostic study was carried out in nine cattle farms to determine the prevalence of flukes through faecal examination. Only three farms with more than 20 cows positive to trematodes were chosen to determine the effectiveness of commercial anthelmintics (triclabendazole, TCBZ; ivermectin + closantel, (IVM + CLOS); IVM + clorsulon, (CLORS); nitroxynil, NITROX). The prevalence of Fasciola hepatica was 27.1% and 29.

The abundance of snail hosts mediates the effects of antagonist interactions between trematodes on the transmission of human schistosomes.

BACKGROUND: Combating infectious diseases and halting biodiversity loss are intertwined challenges crucial to ensure global health. Biodiversity can constrain the spread of vector-borne pathogens circulation, necessitating a deeper understanding of ecological mechanisms underlying this pattern. Our study evaluates the relative importance of biodiversity and the abundance of Bulinus truncatus, a major intermediate host for the trematode Schistosoma haematobium on the circulation of this human pathogen at aquatic transmission sites. METHODS: We combined mathematical modelling and a molecular ba

From coast to interior: Trematodes completing freshwater life cycles are dominant in gulls recorded inland.

Large gulls (Laridae) have expanded from coastal regions into inland Central Europe, where they increasingly exploit fishponds, landfills, and urban habitats. This shift alters their exposure to trematode parasites and their role in linking parasite transmission across ecosystems. We examined the trematode communities of 5 gull species (Larus argentatus, Larus cachinnans, Larus canus, Larus hyperboreus, and Larus marinus) collected in the eastern Czech Republic between 2022 and 2025. Complete helminthological examinations were performed on 207 individuals. Trematodes were detected in 82% of th

Freshwater trematodes differ from marine trematodes in patterns connected with division of labor.

BACKGROUND: Prior research suggests that trematode rediae, a developmental stage of trematode parasites that reproduce clonally within a snail host, show evidence of division of labor (DOL). Single-species infections often have two morphologically distinct groups: small rediae, the 'soldiers', are active, aggressive, and do not appear to reproduce; large rediae, the 'reproductives', are larger, sluggish, and full of offspring. Most data supporting DOL come from trematodes infecting marine snails, while data from freshwater trematodes are more limited and generally do not supported DOL. The sho

Fasciola hepatica in donkeys from southern Texas, USA.

Fasciola hepatica is a trematode parasite with a global distribution found in various mammalian hosts, most notably ruminants. It is associated with hepatic lesions including necrosis and inflammation, as well as can increase the risk of secondary bacterial infections. There is a lack of reports of fasciolosis in equids in North America. This report documents the pre- and postmortem findings of two cases of chronic fasciolosis in donkeys from southern Texas, United States. Grossly, left hepatic lobe atrophy and concurrent right lobe hypertrophy was observed. Histologic examination of the liver

Trematode parasites exceed aquatic insect biomass in Oregon stream food webs.

Although parasites are increasingly recognized for their ecosystem roles, it is often assumed that free-living organisms dominate animal biomass in most ecosystems and therefore provide the primary pathways for energy transfer. To examine the contributions of parasites to ecosystem energetics in freshwater streams, we quantified the standing biomass of trematodes and free-living organisms at nine sites in three streams in western Oregon, USA. We then compared the rates of biomass flow from snails Juga plicifera into trematode parasites relative to aquatic vertebrate predators (sculpin, cutthro

The omic approach to parasitic trematode research-a review of techniques and developments within the past 5 years.

The evolution of technologies to explore parasite biology at a detailed level has made significant advances in recent years, particularly with the development of omic-based strategies. Whilst extensive efforts have been made in the past to develop therapeutic and prophylactic control strategies for trematode parasites, only the therapeutic anthelmintic approach can be regarded as usable in clinical practice. Currently, there is no commercialised prophylactic strategy (such as vaccination) for protection of the definitive host against any trematode parasite. Since 2010 in particular, the integr

Morphological and molecular data for two Plagiorchis species (Trematoda: Plagiorchiidae) from the southern Far East of Russia.

Adult trematodes of two species of the genus Plagiorchis were found in the southern Far East of Russia: one species in the intestine of a naturally infected Japanese large-footed bat (Myotis macrodactylus) and the other in a golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) experimentally infected with metacercariae collected from a stonefly. On the basis of morphological and molecular studies, the trematode individuals found in the bat were identified as Plagiorchis koreanus, which confirms that this species is cosmopolitan. The trematodes reared in the hamster were similar in their morphological feature
