Chagas disease, one of the most important vector-borne diseases in the Americas, is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted to humans by insects of the subfamily Triatominae. An effective control of this disease depends on elimination of vectors through spraying with insecticides. Genetic research can help insect control programs by identifying and characterizing vector populations. In southern Latin America, Triatoma infestans is the main vector and presents two distinct lineages, known as Andean and non-Andean chromosomal groups, that are highly differentiated by the amount of heterochro

Triatomines are vectors of Chagas disease and important model organisms in insect physiology. "Kissing bugs" are obligatory hematophagous insects. A blood meal is required to successfully complete oogenesis, a process primarily controlled by juvenile hormone (JH). We used Dipetalogaster maxima as an experimental model to further understand the roles of JH in the regulation of vitellogenesis and oogenesis. A particular focus was set on the role of JH controlling lipid and protein recruitment by the oocytes. The hemolymph titer of JH III skipped bisepoxide increased after a blood meal. Following

Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens are mosquito-borne nematodes, primarily infecting dogs, but also other species of carnivores and even humans. Given their impact on animal and human health, the transmission of these filarioids has been widely studied. The microfilariaemia has been shown to have a circadian variation for both Dirofilaria species infecting dogs. Due to methodological difficulties, the periodicity was only studied using venous blood samples, while the mosquitoes feed, in fact, on capillary blood. In this context, the present study aimed to test the feasibility of using triatomin

Calculating epidemiological measures of infection by Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, is complex, because it involves several species, different stages of infection in humans and multiple transmission routes. Using the next-generation matrix method, we analysed a model which considers the three stages of human infection, triatomines and dogs (the main domestic reservoirs of T. cruzi when triatomines are present) and the main transmission routes. We derived R 0 and type-reproduction numbers T. We deduced formulas for the number of new infections generated through each t

To determine the infestation and trypanosome infection of triatomines captured in Mauritia flexuosa palm trees across its geographic distribution in the Brazilian savanna (Cerrado), we sampled 42 localities in eight states and in the Federal District, Brazil, between July 2005 and January 2010. Overall, 2154 specimens of the species Rhodnius neglectus, Psammolestes tertius, Triatoma sordida, and Microtriatoma borbai, were collected. Among the 341 palms sampled, 182 (53.3%) were infested with R. neglectus, which resulted in the capture of 1639 specimens (9.0 insects per infested palm). P. terti

Because of renewed interest in parasitic diseases, increasing numbers of persons in clinical and research laboratories have the potential for exposure to parasites and therefore are at risk for acquiring parasitic infections. In this review of laboratory-acquired parasitic infections, we concentrate on protozoan diseases that frequently have been reported to be laboratory acquired: malaria, leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis (American and African), and toxoplasmosis. These diseases can be severe, even fatal, and may be difficult to diagnose. Many laboratorians who have acquired these diseases did

A total of 1,197 wild animals from Pará State north Brazil, were examined for haematozoa. Trypanosoma cruzi-like parasites were found in 13 different species, and were particularly common in a variety of marsupials (Didelphidae), porcupines (Coendou spp.), armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) and coatimundis(Nasua nasua). Three human infections are reported, making a total of seven autochthonous cases of Chagas's disease from Pará since the first were described in 1969. A serological survey of 5,319 inhabitants from the Belém suburbs revealed 14 positive reactions with immunofluorescent antibody

Since spermatheca is able to transport spermatozoa and maintain a specific microenvironment for the storage of viable sperm cells for long periods of time, specific morphofunctional features must be involved in this capacity, and an efficient nutritional and oxygen supply must be required. In this study, we investigated the histological features of spermathecae and fat bodies in six species of three genera of epidemiological importance for Chagas' disease. The association of the reproductive system with the fat bodies and tracheal system was also focused in these species. The reproductive syst

Eleven species of Rhodnius and one of Psammolestes were compared by DNA sequence analysis of fragments of the mitochondrial large subunit ribosomal RNA (mtlsurRNA), the mitochondrial cytochrome b (mtCytb), and the D2 variable region of the 28S nuclear RNA (D2), totaling 1,429 base pairs. The inferred phylogeny, using Triatoma infestans as an outgroup, revealed two main clades within the Rhodniini--one, including the prolixus group of species (Rhodnius prolixus, Rhodnius robustus, Rhodnius neglectus, and Rhodnius nasutus) together with Rhodnius domesticus and Rhodnius neivai, and the other comp

Demolition of a rural house in the State of Cojedes, Venezuela, provided a collection of 7.934 Rhodnius prolixus of which a random sample of 1,415 was weighed within 48 hours. The field weights, coupled with laboratory information of weight loss (in %) with time, average blood ingestion and meal size sufficient to promote moulting, were used to estimate biting rate under domiciliary conditions. The results show that in this particularly highly infested house, the R. prolixus population bites, on the average, at a rate of 58 times/person/day, draining blood at a rate of about 100 cm3/person/mon

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, or American trypanosomiasis, is an important neglected tropical illness caused by the flagellate protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, which is primarily transmitted to humans by hematophagous insects of the subfamily Triatominae. Although knowledge on triatomine movement capabilities at the micro-geographical scale is of fundamental importance concerning the development of effective vector control strategies, it remains a poorly understood subject. Furthermore, survival rates and size estimates of natural populations are important topics to consider when evaluating transmis

Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and is primarily transmitted to humans by the feces of infected Triatominae insects during their blood meal. The disease affects 6-8 million people, mostly in Latin America countries, and kills more people in the region each year than any other parasite-born disease, including malaria. Moreover, patient numbers are currently increasing in non-endemic, developed countries, such as Australia, Japan, Canada, and the United States. The treatment is limited to one drug, benznidazole, which is onl

Trypanosoma cruzi causal agent of Chagas' disease is a paninfective parasite of mammals transmitted through skin fecal contamination by Triatominae vectors. Studies of alternative routes for infection are scarce; therefore, eye infection should be important, because of the eye's high blood irrigation and brain proximity, as port of entry of the parasite. Trypanosoma cruzi parasites and/or their genetic material in ocular and adjacent muscle tissues were studied in batches of six NMRI mice (15 g) and Trichomys apereoides, an ancient caviomorph (250 g) inoculated with T. cruzi metacyclics from B

BACKGROUND: Colombia's National Army is one of the largest military institutions in the country based on the number of serving members and its presence throughout the country. There have been reports of cases of acute or chronic cases of Chagas disease among active military personnel. These may be the result of military-associated activities performed in jungles and other endemic areas or the consequence of exposure to Trypanosoma cruzi inside military establishments/facilities located in endemic areas. The aim of the present study was to describe the circulation of T. cruzi inside facilities

The aim of this study was to look for evidence of vector transmission of Chagas disease, in and around the homes of individuals living in municipalities in the Botucatu region who presented a positive xenodiagnosis. Fifty-eight subjects were studied and blood samples were collected from them for laboratory analysis. The results from this study showed that the individuals in both groups presented low formal education levels and had been working in unskilled professions There was a slight predominance of females. In comparison with previous conditions, it was observed that there had been a sligh

BACKGROUND: Triatomine bugs (Hemiptera, Reduviidae, Triatominae) are blood-sucking vectors of the protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, which causes Chagas disease, a significant source of human morbidity and mortality in the Americas. Autochthonous transmission of Chagas disease in the United States is considered rare, despite evidence of Triatoma species harboring T. cruzi, invading homes, and biting occupants. In the southeastern United States, Triatoma sanguisuga is considered common, yet its distribution, host use, and T. cruzi infection are practically unknown in this region.

Vector-borne transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi (VBTTc) is dependent on the concomitant interaction between biological and environmental hazard over the entire landscape, and human vulnerability. Representations and practices of health-disease-care-seeking and territorial appropriation and use were analyzed for VBTTc in a qualitative ethnographic study in the Zoh-Laguna landscape, Campeche, Mexico. In-depth interviews and participatory observation explored representations and practices regarding ethno-ecological knowledge related to vector-transmission, health-disease-care-seeking, and land use

Originating from the ancient enzootic cycle of Trypanosoma cruzi, human Chagas disease (HCD) emerged focally in different points of America, in the Pre Christian period. Being slowly expanded as a consequence of internal migrations, HCD was settled in those locals where some vector species reached domiciliation and where different kinds of reservoirs entered in domestic environment , with major expression in the post Columbus era, particularly between the final of XIX Century and the middle of XX Century, when the maximum prevalence rates were attained. Originally, scarce evidences of acute ca
