Integrative analysis of transcriptome and proteome revealed nectary and nectar traits in the plant-pollinator interaction of Nitraria tangutorum Bobrov.

BACKGROUND: Nitraria tangutorum is an important desert shrub that shows resistance to drought, salt and wind erosion stresses. It is a central ecological species in its area. Here, we have studied how N. tangutorum has adapted to achieve a successful reproduction strategy. RESULTS: We found that N. tangutorum is mainly pollinated by insects of the Hymenoptera, Diptera and Coleoptera orders. Nitraria tangutorum has very small flowers, with the nectary composed of secretive epidermal cells from which nectar is secreted, located within the inner petals. In addition, analyzing the transcriptome o

Pharmacognostic standardization of Turnera aphrodisiaca Ward.

Turnera aphrodisiaca Ward (Turneraceae) has been used traditionally as an aphrodisiac, stimulant, nerve tonic, and laxative and in kidney, menstrual, and pregnancy disorders. Despite a long tradition of use in the treatment of various ailments, no systematic phytochemical and pharmacological work has ever been carried out on T. aphrodisiaca. The authors suggest that the major stumbling block in systematic exploration of the plant is non-availability of authentic plant material. In the present investigation, various pharmacognostic standards for the plant have been generated so that authentic T

The different routes of parallel evolution in epiarenic growth in a hyperarid desert environment.

The Atacama Desert, one of the driest and oldest regions on Earth, represents an extreme environment that has driven remarkable adaptive evolution over millions of years. Within this setting, the genus Tillandsia comprises specialists capable of surviving at the dry limit of plant life. These species exhibit crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM), lack functional roots, and possess trichomes adapted for water and nutrient absorption. Of the more c. 750 known Tillandsia species, nine occur in the Chilean-Peruvian Atacama Desert, where they colonize bare sand surfaces (epiarenic growth) under hypera

Breeding jassid-resistant okra (Abelmoschus esculentus): from morpho-biochemical traits to precision breeding.

Okra, an economically important vegetable in tropical and subtropical regions, faces severe yield constraints due to sap-sucking pests, particularly jassids (Amrasca spp.). These insects cause hopper burn, leaf curling, and chlorosis, leading to estimated yield losses of 30-100% under severe infestation. Farmers' heavy reliance on chemical control to manage these insects poses environmental, economic, and health risks, underscoring the need for host-plant resistance as a sustainable component of integrated pest management. Successful breeding for jassid resistance requires in-depth knowledge o

Eggshell-derived nanoparticles accelerate wound healing.

Chronic wounds (a silent epidemic) and their adverse impacts are a serious global health problem. Normal wound healing is a complex process that occurs through a series of four interconnected, partially overlapping stages: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodelling. Angiogenesis (new vasculatures produced from pre-existing blood vessels), the proliferative phase, serves a pivotal function in wound healing. In our earlier published literature, we reported the pro-angiogenic properties of eggshell-derived nanoparticles (ES-NP). Considering the central role of angiogenesis in regula

Acral Cutaneous Intraneural Pseudoperineurioma.

Several cutaneous neurovascular stromal lesions are clinically and pathologically ill-defined entities. They are known by different nomenclatures, often unrecognized, misinterpreted, and confused with other skin lesions. Reports have documented cases of palmar and oral lesions in both children and adults. There is uncertainty regarding their true prevalence, clinicopathologic characteristics, and classification. Our aim is to highlight the salient histopathologic, histochemical, and immunohistochemical features of acral nodular tumors showing perineuriomatous differentiation. We found 3 teenag

Naringin ameliorates high-fat diet-induced hepatotoxicity and dyslipidemia in experimental rat model via modulation of anti-oxidant enzymes, AMPK and SERBP-1c signaling pathways.

High-fat diet causes elevation of steatosis, dyslipidemia and oxidative stress which eventually leads to hepatic injury in the form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Naringin, a natural flavonoid, having tremendous potentiality including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic role. Based on this proposition, we investigated the role of naringin in hepatotoxicity and its possible underlying mechanism caused by high-fat diet for prolonged time. Fifteen Wistar rats were divided into three groups: Group A (CON) received normal diet; Group B (HFD) was administered with high-fat d

Insights into strigolactone (GR24) mediated regulation of cadmium-induced changes and ROS metabolism in Artemisia annua.

Agricultural soil contamination and subsequently crops still require alternative solutions to reduce associated environmental risks. The effects of strigolactones (SLs) in alleviating cadmium (Cd) phytotoxicity in Artemisia annua plants were investigated during this study. Strigolactones play a vital role during plant growth and development due to their complex interplay during a plethora of biochemical processes. However, information on the potential of SLs to elicit abiotic stress signaling and trigger physiological modifications in plants is limited. In order to decipher the same, A. annua

Evolutionary studies of the bHLH transcription factors belonging to MBW complex: their role in seed development.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The MBW complex consist of proteins belonging to three major families (MYB, bHLH and WDR) involved in various processes throughout plant development: epidermal cell development, mucilage secretory cells and flavonoid biosynthesis. Recently, it has been reported that TT8, encoding a bHLH transcription factor, is involved in the biosynthesis of flavonoids in the seed coat and it also plays a role in bypassing the postzygotic barrier resulting from an unbalance in genetic loads of the parental lines. Here, we focus on the functional evolution, in seed development, of the bHLH

WRKY transcription factors and plant defense responses: latest discoveries and future prospects.

WRKY transcription factors are among the largest families of transcriptional regulators. In this review, their pivotal role in modulating various signal transduction pathways during biotic and abiotic stresses is discussed. Transcription factors (TFs) are important constituents of plant signaling pathways that define plant responses against biotic and abiotic stimuli besides playing a role in response to internal signals which coordinate different interacting partners during developmental processes. WRKY TFs, deriving their nomenclature from their signature DNA-binding sequence, represent one

Differential Roles of Two Homologous Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Inhibitor Genes in Regulating Cell Cycle and Innate Immunity in Arabidopsis.

Precise cell-cycle control is critical for plant development and responses to pathogen invasion. Two homologous cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor genes, SIAMESE (SIM) and SIM-RELATED 1 (SMR1), were recently shown to regulate Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) defense based on phenotypes conferred by a sim smr1 double mutant. However, whether these two genes play differential roles in cell-cycle and defense control is unknown. In this report, we show that while acting synergistically to promote endoreplication, SIM and SMR1 play different roles in affecting the ploidy of trichome and leaf cells
