Monkeypox as an emerging infectious disease: the ophthalmic implications.

The 2022 outbreak of monkeypox is of worldwide significance. There has been a rapid escalation in case numbers despite efforts to contain it and the WHO has declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. To date, over 51 257 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported, the majority in non-endemic countries, with 3279 in the UK. It is vital for ophthalmologists to understand this disease and the risk it poses.  Human monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus, a double-stranded DNA virus in the Orthopoxvirus genus of the Poxviridae family. Other orthopoxvir

Evaluation of the antiherpetic activity of acyclovir in rabbits.

Acyclovir (3 percent ointment) used topically one to five times a day on acute ocular herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection gave beneficial results as measured by a reduction in corneal involvement, conjunctivitis, iritis, and corneal clouding. Early intensive acyclovir topical treatment every two hours beginning 24 hours after inoculation prevented all but conjunctivitis. Topical treatments did not prevent the establishment of latent HSV infection. Effects of topical acyclovir treatment on rabbit eyes infected with parent McKrae, idoxuridine-resistant, and vidarabine-resistant strains of HSV-1

Clinical evaluation of adenine arabinoside and trifluorothymidine in the treatment of corneal ulcers caused by herpes simplex virus.

One hundred two unselected patients with ulceration of the cornea due to herpes simples virus were treated with either adenine arabinoside or trifluorothymide; the trial was double-blind, stratified, and radomized. The two drugs were given topically five times per day, and the rate of healing was observed and recorded. The series included 87 patients with dendritic ulcers and 15 with amoeboid ulcers. Dendritic ulcers of the cornea can be accurately measured, and the healing process can be easily followed. In this situation no statistically significant difference between the efficacy of adenine

Multi-Omics Analyses Identify ANLN as a Prognostic Biomarker for Recurrence and Metastasis in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer recurrence and metastasis are major causes of cancer-related mortality, but the molecular determinants underlying these processes remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to identify key regulators of lung cancer progression through integrative analyses of bulk and single-cell transcriptomic datasets. METHODS: Bulk transcriptomic and single-cell RNA sequencing data from multiple cohorts were integrated to identify genes associated with survival, recurrence, and metastasis. Tumor microenvironment features were further analyzed to prioritize core progression-rela

Effectiveness of FTD/TPI plus bevacizumab and impact of prior bevacizumab exposure in patients with mCRC: the Italian FLOWER study.

BACKGROUND: The SUNLIGHT trial established trifluridine/tipiracil (FTD/TPI) plus bevacizumab as a new later-line standard in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). However, evidence in real-world populations-often older and more heterogeneous-remains limited. This study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of FTD/TPI plus bevacizumab in a large, unselected real-world mCRC population and aimed to identify potential predictive factors associated with response to this treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, multicenter analysis of patients with refractory mCRC treated with

Optimizing third-line and beyond therapies for metastatic colorectal cancer in Taiwan: an evidence-based consensus.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) is a major public health burden in Taiwan. Despite multiple later-line therapies, outcomes remain suboptimal. International guidelines provide valuable direction, but are difficult to apply locally due to differences in drug accessibility, reimbursement policies, and practice patterns. OBJECTIVES: This initiative developed a Taiwan-specific, consensus framework for managing mCRC in the third line and beyond. DESIGN: This consensus integrated global evidence with local practice, real-world data, and reimbursement considerations. METHODS: A mult

Capillary Hemangioma of the Breast Parenchyma Mimicking New Primary Cancer or Metastasis During Ramucirumab Therapy for Advanced Gastric Cancer.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Ramucirumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2), has been shown to prolong survival in patients with advanced gastric cancer when combined with paclitaxel as second-line chemotherapy in the RAINBOW study. The most common adverse events include hypertension, proteinuria, and hemorrhage, reflecting its anti-angiogenic activity. Although the VEGF signaling pathway is strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of hemangiomas, the development of new hemangiomas during VEGFR-2 inhibition is rarely reported. CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old

Genetic variants of DNA repair-related genes predict efficacy of TAS-102 in patients with refractory metastatic colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Tri-phosphorylated trifluridine (FTD) incorporation into DNA is TAS-102's main anti-tumor action. We tested whether genetic polymorphisms in homologous recombination (HR) and cell cycle checkpoint pathway for DNA repair is associated with outcomes in refractory metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients treated with TAS-102. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed genomic DNA extracted from 233 samples of three cohorts: an evaluation cohort of 52 patients receiving TAS-102, a validation cohort of 129 patients receiving TAS-102 and a control cohort of 52 patients receiving regorafenib.

Treatment of cats with ocular disease attributable to herpesvirus infection: 17 cases (1983-1993).

Medical records of 17 cats with ocular disease attributable to herpesvirus injection were reviewed. Herpesvirus infection was confirmed by a positive result on an immunofluorescent antibody test or by detection of dendritic corneal ulcers. Cats were 3 months to 23 years old (mean, 4.8 years). Sex or breed predilections were not evident. Vaccination history was available for 13 cats, 9 of which had been adequately vaccinated against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calici, and panleukopenia viruses. Six cats had a history of respiratory tract disease. Twelve cats were tested for FeLV, and 3 had po

Herpes simplex dendritic keratitis after keratoplasty.

We treated three patients with herpes simplex dendritic keratitis that occurred between three and 11 months after keratoplasty. The patients had no history of herpetic infection. The eyes of two of the patients were grafted for corneal scarring of undetermined origin. The eye of the third patient was grafted for pseudophakic bullous keratopathy. At the time of onset of dendritic keratitis, all three patients were receiving either maintenance or higher doses of topical corticosteroids. All infections responded to topical antiviral treatment. The findings in these patients illustrate the importa
